If you're looking for upscale, you wouldn't be in a liquor store. Southside is your typical small…read moretown liquor store with a decent selection of mainstream stuff with a few little gems hidden around. You'll have to get past the smell of stale alcohol and wet cardboard that is the staple of any liquor store. You also may have to wade through a cloud of smoke from customers, employees and their friends taking smoke breaks outside per state law. For the most part they tend to be conscientious of where their smoke is going. They keep plenty of Three Floyds in stock and refrigerated as well as many imported beers and most of the domestics you would regularly see at a back yard bbq. They have a decent selection of liquor and some wine and a few no-so-obscure craft beers. The staff is generally friendly when I go in and I haven't had any issues with anyone being rude. Uninformed? Maybe. It depends on what you go in there expecting. If you're looking for a wine/beer/liquor snob then you may want to go elsewhere but if you want an opinion on what goes down the smoothest, tastes good, sells best, etc. then you can usually get at least a little bit of information from the staff. It's a little disheartening to see fellow Yelpers speaking so stereotypically and poorly of people based purely on their looks. It's not a surprise that the poor ratings so far have all been entered by people who thought they knew the staffs life stories based on what they thought they looked like. If you treat the people who work at Southside as human beings and equals then they will treat you the same. I have never had a bad experience in this store and that's more than I can say for at least one of the other liquor stores in town.

There's no shame, and there's a lot to like, about Southside's beer selection. They usually have…read moresomething good, even if they don't hit their full potential with the regularity I'd like. And let's face it, they beat the pants off the competition -- with the possible (and very new) exception of the Malt Shoppe (see my other review). My only complaint is that the people who work here are sometimes ill-informed and even rude. When it comes to beer in Indiana, I've gotten used to the former. And I'm pretty tolerant of the latter in isolation. But ill-informed AND rude is a combination that's hard to swallow. Oh well, I still wish them well. Craft beer is hard enough to find as it is.

Before walking off with a bottle, the kind man behind the counter offered a little taste, because he had just opened a bottle. They will give you little sips of some of the things they have open, if you're curious about something new that you've never tried before. SoBro Spirits has got a lotta bourbon and whiskey, and in fact, I would say this is one of the better places to find bourbon in Indy. The wine section is fine but not the largest, although what they do have seems well curated and thoughtful. All around the store, you will see shopping baskets full of random bottles of discounted wine, beer and other alcohol. It was kind of fun to paw through the baskets and try to find a cheap treasure. Along with the Canadian whiskey, I walked away with a nice Rioja and a rose for a steep discount. This liquor store is located close to the Monon Trail, so it's easy to get to via bike or walking.
