Downtown Subscription is usually busy, but the early morning hours are a bit quieter and you're…read moremore apt to find a quiet corner to read/write/set up workshop or meet up with a friend/colleague. It can get quite crowded in the winter time, but they do have an outside patio/courtyard that does open up a bit more space for seating come spring/summer/fall. The staff has been friendly in my experience, I can't say that I've ever had a negative experience thus far (knock on wood). Some random information: ~ A water station is available, which is a plus. ~ Parking is available, however, at busier times, you may have to find street parking and do some walking. And the best information: ~ If you happen to be a reader, there is a bookstore near by (Garcia Street Books) that opens around 10am, I believe. Coffee and books is always a win, a double win!

The space is large, and you can tell many locals gather there regularly, giving it a strong community feel. The service was okay: a man taking orders and handling the register was friendly and cordial, while the woman making the coffee was a bit dry in her demeanor. However, the coffee was excellent, so that didn't bother me at all. The croissants were soft, warm, and very tasty, a perfect match for the coffee. The café also features artwork hanging on the walls, (looks like they like cats very much ) and a small section of magazines and newspapers near the entrance, which I really enjoyed. The location is excellent, right next to a independent bookstore, making it a great stop before or after browsing books. Overall, I recommend this café for its quality coffee, relaxed atmosphere, and convenient location.

Ordered a signed copy of Gregory Halpern's latest book quite some time ago. I was just informed…read morethat they had no more signed copies and they were very sorry, but they did have an unsigned copy though they were sold out too. Not sure how that works. Why is something marketed if it's not actually available? I wouldn't be surprised to see a signed, pristine copy of the same book for sale for a much higher price in a year through their site.

This review is strictly for their mail-order service, and I only wish I'd discovered their store…read moreduring our last visit to Santa Fe. Anyway; I wanted a very heavy out-of-print book that was priced better here than anywhere else, and particularly since Photo-Eye's copy was in "new" condition. I ordered the book online, but I had a question and called them the next morning. The woman I spoke to - who was actually located in the store - was very pleasant and helpful. The book arrived today and it's in perfect condition, plus it was incredibly well-packed. (Update on 3/2/16): It's four years later and their mail order service is still *outstanding*. Occasionally I order books from them and all aspects are always terrific. Today I called to ask a question about a pending order, and the young guy I spoke to (Christian) was *incredibly* friendly. (Update on 6/1/17): More outstanding service, as always; today I spoke to someone in the bookstore (Laura) re: an order, and she was also incredibly friendly & helpful.
