I wanted a larger boat with a head and was looking for a 6-8 hour charter. Bad Habit got pretty good reviews from TripAdvisor but like every internet rating site, there's always a mixture of excellent reviews sprinkled with very poor reviews. At the conclusion of my research I selected Bad Habit Sport Fishing Charters. At the time that I reserved the trip, we left the option of either a 6 or 8 hour charter open. Captain Jason called Friday and we decided to go with an 8 hour charter which I believe he told me was $1300 (He charged me $1349). He then began to tell me that the First Mate is typically tipped 15-20% but then corrected himself and said 20-25%...hmmm, that was odd. In any case, he told us where to show up and by when. We arrived at the marina about 6:30am, 30 minutes prior to departure. The First Mate was on board getting the rods and boat ready. The First Mate greeted us with "put your stuff on the end of the dock and wait." Hmmm, that was weird, I thought to myself, not particularly welcoming. Captain Jason showed up a bit before 7 with ice and he transferred a good amount of it to a cooler. We were then greeted from Captain Jason with a "you can come aboard and put your stuff anywhere in the front..." There were no introductions. There was no explanation as to what and where we would be going. There were no questions of how experienced either of us were. There was no explanation to where life jackets were (more on this later). We pushed off promptly at 7 but needed to return to dock because Captain Jason forgot something. We then proceeded to two bait shops and were on our way. The first stop was a handful of miles out (I'm guessing) where we stopped to fish for bait. With the exception of my father and I, none of my sons or my wife had any significant fishing experience, certainly not tossing around in the ocean. After instructing us to drop the lines in the water, the First Mate made a comment..."they don't know anything...." My dad is older and with health issues so it did take some time to get his sea legs. However, I should mention that I own a Catalina 42 (Farraige) and sail San Francisco Bay and the Pacific. I mentioned the life jackets earlier not because I was expecting to need to wear them (nor are they required for a boat that size) but I though it was old they wouldn't tell us where they were. Sailing in San Francisco where the water temperature is in the high 50's, I make everybody on board wear a PFD....I was just surprised, given how I've seen things go south fairly quickly that he wouldn't at least have mentioned where they were. In any case, I'm sure he's not required to do so by law and I'm sure he had them... We stopped at about 6 spots and caught fish at every spot. Unfortunately we only caught about 2 keepers of Grouper but we caught a little more than a dozen of some variety of snapper. Given this was the first time I've chartered a boat, I have nothing to compare this to. My oldest son said "he wasn't feeling it" and every other member of my party didn't have one nice thing to say about the crew. As my wife said, "I wouldn't care if we didn't catch a single fish if the crew was personable and had a personality." Overall, I think it was a disappointment. Not due to the amount of fish we caught but solely because of Captain Jason and his First Mate failure to add to the experience and make us feel welcomed. That said, we're laughing about it now. Mostly about Captain Jason's comment of not being able to live in California because of gun control laws and the fact that the Captain owns 70 guns. My sons were also quick to point out the irony of this individual's welfare is resting on the health of the marine ecosystem and he kept flicking his cigarette butts into the Gulf.

Make sure and book early, because he is a popular Captain. He is a great guide and has been fishing the Tampa Bay and surrounding waters for over 20 years. If you have a certain fish you are targeting discuss it with him on the phone and he will make sure and "hook" you up. I have been out with Joel 3 times and he has put me on the fish everytime. We caught our limit of Sheepshead (good eats), he's put me on a wicked Snook bite twice, and we caught 10 keeper trout on my last trip with a Black Drum and a Flounder too boot. That leads me to my three things: 1) Joel takes care of the rod/tackle, live bait, ice and will clean any catch for you. 2) BYOB for drinks and snacks 3) He does not watch the clock. If the fish are hitting you are fishing. Look him up next time you are in the bay area and especially around the full/null moons. Bigger tide changes = more fish.

Way to much travel and zero fish the rest of the day.Not a good near shore trip for$850 6 hour trip.If you want to tour the 3 bays,then this is the trip for you.If you want to catch fish,then consider another boat. We weren't jerks and tipped the Capt.accordingly.This was my sons first charter trip and we tried to make the best of it.So disappointed.

Kris put us on fish at every spot. between the both of us we caught around 20-25 fish in a few hours. the best part was the experience.
