Let me start by saying this place has great old world charm and a beautiful setting on the river. Those are the positives. The food was some of the worst I've ever eaten in a London pub. I ordered the Sunday Roast (beef). It came with two small slices of beef that were hard and dry, two small chunks of carrot that were cold and hard, a wedge of cabbage that was cold and barely cooked, three hard cold chunks of what was meant to be roasted potatoes, a bit of gravy and a decent Yorkshire pudding. I would have sent it back but it took almost an hour to get our food and the place was obviously short-staffed so did not have time to try. I'll never eat here again. I would go back but only for drinks and atmosphere! read more

Average food at a nicely located pub. Nice decor and a pleasant location by the river, this makes for a nice Sunday afternoon destination. I wasn't too fussed by the food, it's just you're average pub menu and Sunday roast type of place. We had burgers, which whilst large, weren't amazing. I had a lamb burger but to be fair it could have been beef as it didn't taste of much! I didn't realise chips came with the burgers and ordered and paid for sweet potato fries, which never turned up. I also paid for one of the burgers to have bacon and cheese on it, but it arrived with no bacon. We were in a rush so didn't have time to speak to the staff about this error. The food came to £24 in total. Whilst it filled us up, it wasn't amazing. I'd come here again for a drink though! read more

I love pubs by the river especilly in summer. The name London Apprentice is said to come from the apprentices working at London's livery companies who used to row out to Isleworth in colourful barges during their free time. On the banks of the river Thames in Old Isleworth, just a short walk from Syon Park. The pub first opened in 1731 and used to be kept open all night for people travelling on the river, from which this pub has great views. The pub was was a resting place for travellers on the river and stayed open all night. A tunnel which links the pub with the nearby church, was used by smugglers to store contraband in the crypt. Also a place for secret liaisons; in Tudor times, Henry VIII with wife to be Catherine Howard, (ironically she was held nearby at Syon House before her execution in 1542) and later, Charles II with his mistress Nell Gwynne. Rebuilt in the early 18th century, Charles Dickens and Oliver Cromwell are supposed to have drunk here.Obviously Cromwell was earlier. The long, low ceilinged, ground floor bar was once divided; the public bar with darts and bar billiards, the cosier lounge with an open fireplace. Above this is a framed 'mural' recording a bell-ringing competition in 1848. The Regency dining room upstairs has excellent views across the Thames. In the winter this is a cosy and relaxing place for a bite to eat and a good pint. Real ale.In the summer it throws its doors open and becomes (what I love) a riverside pub. read more

My old time favourite spot in Isleworth - a riverside pub which is especially gorgeous in the summer when you can sit outside. They used to play live Jazz on Thursday evenings a few years ago but have now stopped doing it. Nonetheless a great place to enjoy a drink and great food. Been driving past this pub for years and always gutted not to have had the time to stop and sample it. I remedied that Easter weekend and so glad I did. There's very little not to like about this pub. Location - perfect.Prices, well didn't eat but the beer seemed cheaper than comparable pubs where I usually drink in South Ealing.Steeped in history and all very laid back and cosy. Can't wait to sup a pint there in the summer out in the sun watching the river traffic go by.Parking is a bit limited but the area is nice enough to park elsehere and walk to it. read more

Really nice pub - on the river, which is lovely when the sun is shining. Food is really yummy and there is a good amount of space both inside and out. It's never too busy either, so you can always get a seat. Definitely one to go and visit in the summer months!! read more

Quality pub. This place has tonnes of history. It's been around for hundreds of years and has been a bit of a hotspot for historical celebrities. Apparently this was henry the 8th local when in residence at Syon House, also Dick Turpin the infamous highway man used to visit. It was also a hotspot for smugglers who would store their bootie along the banks of the thames. A lot has changed since then and it's now nicer than ever. Recently refurbished it looks amazing but has kept it's character and charm. If you go there to eat you won't be disappointed. My favorite thing about this place is if you visit there at christmas, you can sit in front of the log fire in a wing backed chair and look down the thames. Perfect. read more

The food came out really quick and the plate was packed full. The lamb was slightly over cooked and so was the pork but the amount of veg and roast potatoes certainly made up for this. The beer selection is excellent and the building is very old and impressive, a cheap "that will do" choice. read more

I used to go to this pub when I was a kid with my Dad before England Rugby matches at Twickenham. So when I arranged to meet some friends there before this weekend's I was really looking forward to seeing how this pub had fared in the 20 years since I last visited. It's a great location, right on the river in Isleworth. Great view, nice terrace for the summer etc. However, the service is to be lamented. You can't order drinks from the table staff even if you're eating. You have to go to the bar and the bar staff are young and a little unfriendly. We decided to eat there and I ordered a rump steak, medium rare as I'd seen another table eating steak and it looked pretty good. My brother also ordered a medium rare steak. When ours came, his was medium rare, mine was overcooked, more medium to well-done than medium rare. It was also a bit tough. Had it not been tough I'd have sucked it up and eaten it but as it was tough and overcooked I sent it back to the kitchen. The chef must have been aggrieved though as he cut the steak in half and sent it back with the waitress to claim it was in fact medium rare. At best there was a tiny bit of pink in the middle but definitely not medium rare. However, that is besides the point. If a customer complains about the food, don't argue, just replace the food. Next up a new steak arrived but woefully undercooked. Now, I said the chef was clearly aggrieved; this was definitely evident after sending out a steak that wasn't just rare it was barely cooked. Not good. Having sent my food back once I didn't want to cause a scene by sending it back again so I ate around the edges. Having spent, as a group, £300 in the pub the least you would expect is a little humility in replacing a £10 steak. In summary: the pub needs to do some work. read more

The London Apprentice occupies a prime spot of river, ensuring that it's bathed in sunlight on good days. This makes it very popular with passer-bys, which in turn leads to long waits for food and drink (an hour wait for food when I was there). If that food was something special, I might be prepared to wait. But when it's the disappointing fare from the Taylor Walker chain, it's not a sacrifice I'd recommend making. read more

Just sat down for a hearty dinner - beautiful setting. Owner/proprietor wasn't very friendly though. No eye contact or smile as he pointed to the general direction of our table. Will update with a review of the quality of food. Update: The food was fresh and pretty good. The fish and chips was generously proportioned, but the scampi and chips could have done with some more pieces of scampi. All in all, a nice place with good food. Surprised it was so empty on a Sat night given its location and quality of food. Will visit next time and hope to see more people and a friendly and warm atmosphere. read more

I live a 5 min walk from this pub and as soon as the sun comes out it is packed!!!!! nice if you can get a seat in the summer. Food ok, but all the staff that have served me seem pretty nice. On the down side lots of broken glass around the outside of pub and across the road from drunks. read more

Located on the banks of the River Thames, with some parking (and loads of parking nearby in Syon Park) is this lovely pub. Very nice toilets, a great selection of real ales, lovely staff, and gorgeous food. Plenty of space inside and out to sit; both with views over the river. read more

The Apprentice is a lovely pub located on the Thames in Isleworth and is one of the best pubs I've ever been to. It has a long and exciting history (according to the menu blurb anyway) and apparently the first liquor license was issued to it in the 1700s. Some of the original features still survive and the rest of the pub is in keeping with the antique look. It's lovely sitting out on the beer deck in summer. It's right on the the Thames and is very clean and well maintained. Inside it's a lovely cosy bar and right now it's beautifully decorated for Christmas. They also have an upstairs dining area with a view of the river. The tables downstairs are candlelit and very romantic. The service is friendly and helpful and food is great. It's slightly more expensive than most locals but then again my husband and I had a drink and a meal each and paid £22, which is not a lot really. I cannot recommend this strongly enough - it's worth a visit if you're in the area and possibly even if you're not! read more

This pub is a really great place to come for a couple of drinks with your mates because its a really beautiful setting, right by the river and it has a really relaxed atmostphere. The service is a little annoying because even when you have ordered your drinks and food and your sitting eating your meal, if you want another drink you have to go back up to the bar which is slightly frustrating. The waitresses here are a bit all over the place and not in control, you usually have to repeat your order several times and when they come out of the kitchen, they usually just yell a number, without actually trying to find the table number themselves. Overall the food is very good and they have a lot of snack/bar food if you don't want a main meal. Best thing about this place though is the location and if you can stand some shoddy service then it is well worth a visit. read more

Such a lovely riverside pub! Food is really nice too, especially the Mediterranean platter, the steak and the scampi! The surrounding area of old Isleworth is also very nice, you could pretend you are in a villiage quite easily sat outside! If the weather is cold there is a really nice fireplace inside and the seating is very comfy-highly recommended! read more

I gave this pub a star because of its location by the river, other than that there is nothing good to write about it. The food was simply terrible, small portions and burnt. The service though was even worse, absolutely awful; slow and inefficient, tables that looked like they hadn't been cleared in weeks, when promised to come back and clean it the waitress never returned. If you want a nice pub lunch or drink, find somewhere else ; even the river view wont save this experience. read more

Nice beer, not tried the food past getting some chips which were fine, but the service is pretty rubbish, you stand at the bar and its one of those places that unless you are dead centre of the bar you become invisible and person after person pushes into that spot to be served before you and even when you dare to strike up can you serve me next please I was before all those people you get a look like you are a trouble maker, no apology and made to feel like you are the one in the wrong. I wouldn't normally write a review like this as getting overlooked can happen any where but all three times I have patiently waited to be served the staff don't seem to give a ..well insert your own choice of four letter word. read more

this place used to be my local many years ago it was a great pub/resturaunt then and still is..the staff and service are great..especially nice in the summer months..used to be a good place to meet new people but not so much these days but i guess thats more down to to society we live in now..still is a nice pleasant atmosphere good food and ales good selection of wines read more
