We visited The Loaf for fondue as a party of 9 on Dec 29th. To say it was a disappointment would be an understatement. It is a 4 course, set menu for $60. The cocktails and appetizers came out in a matter of minutes... then we proceeded to wait 90 minutes for our second course which, no kidding, was either tomato soup or a spinach salad. Literally nothing to prepare The fondue (3rd course) was, as expected, gruyere and Swiss cheese but all the items to dip were cold .. including the meatballs and vegetables. Our upset was not with the wait staff, but with the management and how they handled the experience. They were fully aware that we were upset and that not only the timing was way off, but the food was embarrassingly ad, Never once did someone come and give anything other than lame excuses for the pathetic service and food. In the end, we were compensated on our bill for the all-around disappointing evening, but I can't in good conscience recommend this establishment to anyone looking for an nice evening out The only reason I rated this 2 stars instead of one were the cocktails. read more

I went here with my brother the pizza is absolutely amazing, the staff is absolutely fantastic, and the ambience is great. To me restaurant is clean and they have air conditioning. I also tried the soup of the day which was absolutely amazing. Home made and fresh ingredients. If you're looking for a light crust that's homemade go here. It's outstanding. read more

I'm from Vancouver and it's my first time to Fernie. I'm staying at the ski resort and really enjoying the dining options in the town, just 10 minutes away. The house made pasta on the menu caught my eye but we were enticed to try the pizza special of the day (chicken, bacon, banana peppers, mozzarella, and mushrooms, with a honey drizzle). We combined that with a really delicious salad with beets, goat cheese, apples and candied walnuts. We also started with the soup of the day which came with bread. The pizza crust was thin and crispy with a little bit of chewiness in the thicker parts. The salad was a good sized portion. We split everything between two people and we were unable to finish the last two slices of pizza because we were full. It made a nice pre-ski breakfast the next day. Impressive food scene in Fernie, a town with a resident population of about 6,000 but with numbers swelling in winter and summer with visitors. read more

I am astonished that the loaf only has 3 and a half stars. In my books, they are 5 stars. Last night I had the Moroccan lamb- it was straight up phenomenal. I've never said that about any single dish in my life but that lamb deserves the highest rating possible. It was incredibly tender and just peeled right off the bone and was bursting with flavour. It was on garlic whipped potatoes with an eggplant sort of stir fry (I don't remember the proper name..capacoda?) but it had so much flavour as well. Each bite made me "omg..mmm.. this is so good". My family got two different types of pizza and theirs were both amazing as well. It was clean, socially distanced, and our waiter was great! I've been to the loaf many times before and have always had a good meal but this time was exceptional. Well done! read more

Probably the best fine dining in Fernie. Menu is small and well thought out. The ambiance is great. You are able to talk, and enjoy the meal. They often times have live music as well. Spent some time on the tiny street-parking style patio (twice!) over the Canada Day long weekend. I will highlight the second time I was here, from what I will call the extended stay, day. First off, if you can get Matthew as a server, he is awesome. I will recommend this restaurant to everyone because of how fun, engaging and hilarious this man is. We literally were in his section long enough that we saw all three menus (Brunch! Happy Hour! Dinner!) and somehow he put up with the six of us for that long. Give him a raise! He navigated our ever increasing sauciness levels with charm and ease, I would have a pint with him any time. Ok, so the food: Lots of Vegetarian options available. The pizza is only $10 during Happy Hour, while the selection is slightly more limited it is a great deal. I recommend the Ghostrider (spicy!)and the Artichoke (Spinach, Mushroom, fresh Mozzarella, Alfredo, Grana Padano) they have Gluten Free dough available as well. The absolute best thing on the menu is the Fried Greens which is basically a masterpiece of Brussel Sprouts and Broccoli, deep fried, covered in Lemon zest, Chilies and Parm cheese. I would eat four plates of this in a row if I had a smidge less public dignity. The crispy calamari was also a welcome surprise. The brunch items that we tried were also good, but everyone had overcooked eggs and the restaurant wasn't that busy at all. We didn't send the food back (our fault for being hangry/hungover) to point out the mistake, my bad, but over poaching when its slow is a sign of a new cook or a lack of care. The Veg Bowl I had was great otherwise, I think the Benny eaters suffered more at the lack of good, runny yolk. This restaurant is also a bakery but not in the traditional sense, I'm pretty sure you can order bread from batches that are made a couple times a week. The meals served here use the bread that is made in house, it was tasty. Also, They have tons of BC Craft brews and they make an above average Caesar. I am going back next time I am in Fernie and convince Matthew to get tipsy with me (sounds creepier than it is supposed to, I swear!) read more

We are beyond impressed with The Loaf. We snagged the only open table at 8 pm on a Saturday and were promptly greeted by a taller gentleman (didn't get his name but he was tending bar) who brought us menus and told us our server Matthew would be with us shortly. Less than a minute later, we had Matt! He was so delightful, recommended a great drink for my boyfriend and a delicious salmon pasta for myself. The drinks were out in two minutes and the food out in less than ten! Matt checked in on us often, and gladly gave us some recommendations for breakfast. Despite being very busy he never let us feel we were bothering him. This is a big cafeteria/ coffee shop style place. I found the name misleading as this place did not have a large selection of baked goods. My bf and I visited at 3 pm and enjoyed their $10 pizza happy hours from 3-5pm. The pizza was thin-crusted and 10 inches. We got the Quattro kind with ham, artichoke, mushrooms and olives. Their pies are lovely, and this is the only place in Fernie for the Brits and Aussies to get their pie fix! The mushroom pie is my fav but the tomato, cheese, and onion is also worth a mention! The fresh sourdough here is amazing - paired with a fresh homemade soup, makes for a yum lunch! The decor is well done, not over the top and very classy. I like all the natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. The staff are friendly and helpful, but always very busy. I consider Loaf a must visit every time I am back in Fernie. read more

A very nice place to eat and catch up with friends. First of all when you enter the place, the smell of fresh baked bread takes your senses. Then you see an appetizing counter of treats and other delicious looking items. Assuming it was a regular coffee shop, I order an item and have breakfast. Then I'm given a menu for an apparent restaurant at this location. I had to try an item off the menu just for good mesure and was not dissapointed. The only downside was the fact that, for a newcomer, I had no idea of how the process worked. I didn't realize that this was a restaurant where you are to pay at the end of your meal (and leave a tip). It is almost like a 2 in one café shop and sit down restaurant. The decor is good, the ambiance is comfortable but the price is a bit steep. Overall a good place to eat and I will return. read more

I was here recently for a Geocaching event where we all decided to grab something to eat, the food was pretty good but the service was something to be desired. The server I had that particular day wasn't the 'nicest' to put it. The scenery there was great, nice and bright with lots of menu options. Downside; the pricing was quite steep. A piece of fish with fries $16... a medium pizza with only cheese and sauce $15; want to add extra toppings? That would run your bill up an extra $1- $2 per topping choice depending on which topping you chose. In the future I may return again... but chances aren't very high as I am on a limited budget. read more

I really want to like Loaf, but it always underwhelms me. The decor is bright and cheerful in a nice high-ceilinged room. The service can be a little hit and miss, it always seems to be harried or amateurish. But the food is pricey and lacking in flavour. The sandwiches leave me wishing for something extra in them. Yesterday I had the lamb-burger special which was just meh. It could have been anything in there it just didn't taste of anything. They make great bread but need to put something with more oomph with it. Somewhat underwhelming food, but a nice cozy atmosphere. The house drinks were about the best thing we ordered. We also had the Thai fish stew (just ok and a bit odd in an otherwise "Italian fare" place) and thin crust pizza. I was happy they offered gluten free crust, but it wasn't cooked all the way through. We came to Loaf for dinner Monday March 26, 2018, Loved the beet salad,. Unfortunately, the server ordered the wrong pizza, and our friends had to wait an extra 20 minutes for their dinner. 1. Suggest the counter tops be wiped with clean cloth after the staff stands on the counter with their shoes on to reach the chalkboard.. 2. Fine dining? No way. This is a bistro and at least in September, the service is beyond lousy, the food - okay, the prices - high. Went in on a Sat for dinner, excellent but service was very slow. Went back on Sun. for breakfast and the food was cold and the bacon in my BLT was mostly fat. Yuck. Went back by myself on Mon (Labor Day) for a late afternoon pizza and glass of wine. Simple Margarita pizza with 4 little strips of procuitto and a glass of red wine $38.45. There were 7 customers inside and 4 outside with 9 waitstaff/bartender/2cooks and it took over 15 min to get seated another 10 min. to order. Staff was huddled behind the bar/serving counters. My pizza was served piping hot but it was the weirdest fattiest procuitto ever and only 4 scraps on a 6 piece pizza at a $4 extra charge. This place needs some attentive management. Clearly the kids are runnin the joint for breakfast and late afternoon dining. read more

Had the special which was a lightly breaded whitefish and chips. Whitefish was cooked perfectly, battered very lightly and the fries were delicious as well. Portion of fish was massive which after the first bite was a very welcoming portion due to its great flavour. My wife had a pixza which was also very tasty, focusing more on the toppings than a thick dough like other pizzarias. Not from the area but would recommend to anyone. read more

Headed up to Canada for the day from Whitefish. Found Loaf through Yelp reviews. The food was great. The service has pretty slow, with our waitress (there appeared to be two) torn between taking orders and running plates to tables. Yet there were others just standing around. Food was great, though, so worth the wait. Maybe it was just unexpectedly busy. Cute town, and really the first place to get a bite to eat if entering through Roosville. I had the Loafer on the grainery bread and it was delicious. My husband had the burger and fries (very good). Oldest so had some sort of pot pie that he really liked. My youngest was not impressed with the fancy cheese on the Grill Cheese -- "it smells gross";) Overall, good food if you're in no particular hurry. read more

Loaf manages to hit several different niches in the food market in Fernie. They act as bakery, coffee shop/cafe and also as a dining establishment, all rolled into one lovely space. I find the bread quite good, but not to-die-for-good. It is still definitely bakery bread that can make some fantastic, delicious and reasonably priced loaves. I find their prices to be on par with the grocery stores for bakery-style loaves. The loaf of the day is a very good price, usually only $2 or $3! Next - breakfast. My spouse swears by their sausage rolls and I occasionally find traces of clandestine sausage roll consumption in our car. My poison of choice is the spinach rolls. They are very delightfully flaky, take that as a warning though, you will get enough crumbs all over you'd think you were starring in a dandruff commercial. Finally, loaf is one of the classiest places you can go eat dinner in Fernie. They have online table reservations too, which puts them in a league of their own in this town. One thing I absolutely love about them is the seasonally rotating menu. When you live in a small town, you can get bored of the dinner choices pretty quickly and loaf has figured out a way to keep me coming back. A few words to the wise: in the winter, those gorgeous big windows can be a bit cold to sit next to if you didn't bring a sweater or a jacket. Lastly, they make delicious pizzas, but apparently I can be topping-choice challenged. I made a pizza with the following things on it: feta, olives, anchovies. Anyone pick up on the theme? The theme was salt. Lots and lots of salt. Maybe it should be on the menu as "Anne's mistake" ...stick to the pre-designed pizzas, or at least think through what you're ordering first, unlike me! read more

Last year We had lunch here during a brief stay in Fernie. Decided to come again on this brief vacation. In between season here so we expected it not to be so busy as last year. Food was excellent but service was just a little slow even though the place was quiet. 4 stars this time. Service was slow, friendliness was lacking. Tried it out for a romantic date night. We had the arancini to start which was awesome. We then shared a pizza (pepperoni) and a pasta dish (fettucine carbonara) These were both very good as they make their own dough for each. The only draw back was the carbonara was a bit salty. Loaf has really great bread and pizza! Everything else is likely excellent, but I haven't tried it yet. The staff are very relaxed and good at what they do. A little on the pricey side, but worth it. Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Food was... lacking, to say the least. The house salad was missing the walnuts, but fresh. We were feeling adventurous and tried the BBQ Chicken with corn. We figured, hey, at least a few people had to OK this before it made it to the menu. Not so sure that was the case - the corn flavor overwhelmed the pizza. The sauce was orange and lacking in flavor, the chicken and onions were sparse and the crust was very thin, too thin for a bakery, imo.
