Two stars because the fries are good. One star because the attitude wasn't.
Ate there many times when it was Grandma's. It was excellent, but then for some reason, they would often be out of stuff, like buns or drinks, so stopped going.
Popped in there a couple of weeks ago, didn't know it had changed hands. Ordered a burger, medium rare like usual. The guy balked. Something something temp our burgers blah blah blah. Explained that I had ordered it that way in the past, and the guy decided to be argumentative about it. Eventually he told me he was the new owner since June.
I should have walked out. I should always walk out when they tell me they can't properly make a burger. But I didn't. I was hungry, and Poky is a food wasteland.
The guy swore he couldn't do medium rare, as if the FDA would come get him, but the burger would be good.
It wasn't good. It was gray in the middle, and dry as a bone. On top of that, it had no flavor, as if seasoning were non-existent.
I'm only going to say this once : if at least some juice doesn't drip out of the burger, you did it wrong. I know everybody is on this burnt-to-a-crisp smashburger kick for some reason, but a burger shouldn't be crunchy. Want crunch? Get a taco. Stop ruining things.
And, if you're going to overcook it, make sure the meat has a good fat content so it stays juicy. And no, slathering it in sauce is not going to help.
Later when he asked how it was, I told him it was overdone, to which he replied that he doesn't have a way to temp the burgers, despite saying earlier that he temps the burgers. I suggested, like anyone who's cooked the same burger repeatedly, that you just have to go by time.
"I know that" he replies "I went to school for years to learn to cook."
I bit my tongue, because I had already decided I wouldn't be back anyway, but I really wanted to ask if he had missed the day in cooking school when they talked about seasoning.
Instead, I just thought, "well, that attitude just lost you a star, smart guy."
I really hate to dump on a small business, I really do. I go out of my way to patronize small businesses, and almost always pay in cash, because, well, you know...
However, if I had ever run a business (and I have run a business or two) like that, I would expect to get trashed. read more
