So happy I wandered into this little place. I had just gorged myself on ice cream and fish and chips, but the shop was just too tempting not to stop in. Yes- making all the right decisions. Like others have said, tons of cheese varieties here (many local) as well as (in small quantities) some chocolates, preserves, and olives (cheese is really the star here but thought it was worth a mention). I got the "cheese platter" which is 6 euro for 4 kinds of cheeses on a little tray. I thought the servings were generous and could easily feed two people for a nice little meal/snack with some bread and fruit. As for the cheeses themselves- they were phenomenal! I just picked some that looked interesting and were Irish. I tried the seaweed cheese (which I almost got before I tried it). It was very strong and had an interesting flavor, but I personally could not have eaten more than my little taste.
I ended up getting Derg cheddar, "garlic cheese", Cais na Tira (sheep), and goat log. I think the lady working there was new, so I didn't get much explanation. Didn't really matter, I guess because everything I got was awesome. The Derg cheddar was probably the most unique (and my favorite!)- it had this amazing mold (think blue cheese?) growing on it and had an overall amazingly complex, bold flavor. The garlic cheese came in these little wheels and had a beautifully mellowed but still distinct garlic flavor melding with the cheese. The sheep cheese didn't have a very strong "sheepy" flavor like some sheep cheeses I've tried. It was good but not as memorable as the other wild ones I got. The goat log was a lovely soft cheese with a brie-textured exterior and a more solid interior. Lovely soft cheese to have with my other hard cheeses. Well, I just realized that I really don't know how to talk about cheese, but I can assure you that the cheeses here are delicious! read more
