You'll be greeted by a heaping pile of home-baked oatmeal cookies AND an adorable & friendly pug-beagle named Jemma. The Blue Room on the second floor has a private shower and toilet, all very clean, and a comfy bed with armchair + mini-fridge. Self-service tea is right outside the door. Our weekday breakfast included lemon blueberry scones baked from scratch, oatmeal apple muffins (zucchini muffins the next day), and a giant, sizzling cheese-mushroom-onion-tomato frittata with coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and gourmet teas. Oats and flax also available. Organic berries and cantaloupe. Will definitely stay here again if ever back in town... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Blue Room has less natural light for great sleep, and the Yellow Room is bright and sunny. Christine and Doug were amazingly helpful with small things like printing off a page or two for the class I was taking in Iowa City. The frittata that appears on days when Christine isn't overwhelmed with her other work is amazing! They were extremely accommodating of my varying schedule, leaving coffee out beyond the typical clean-up time. I'll stay here again when I'm overnighting in Iowa City. Highly recommended, especially if you're in Iowa City for a short-term class.

This home is beautiful inside and out, the rooms are spacious plus the beds are oh so soft and comfortable. The location is perfect, especially its closeness to the college my daughter attends, making it the most suitable and satisfying stay for us all. Our time spent was filled with peace, joy & comfort. On the early mornings and evenings, we would get in a little cardio by walking around the quiet, clean well-kept neighborhood or just to sit out on the patio and relax in a cool serene environment. All I can say is this is just a rare find, unique location top tier service and great host. This little paradise you have created is understated. I enjoyed every bit of my time there, it is the perfect choice when staying in Mount Vernon IOWA. I highly recommend this place. It's truly a gem. I also want to pray for you and your family that you will succeed in all your ventures, as you continue to be a blessing to others. -PKM-

We had a great time visiting here and were so grateful for the innkeeper, Kim, who was gracious, funny, and very attentive to our needs - really a lovely person. There was also a nice lady who maintained the rooms. Everything was nice: big fluffy white towels; excellent Continental breakfast; tea and cookies for an after dinner snack. The B&B is on the edge of the Cornell College campus and about a 5+ min walk from downtown Mr. Vernon (with a charming main street). For anyone visiting Mt Vernon I would highly recommend you contact Brackett House for a stay. I would love to return and enjoy this relaxing house again!

Customer service was great, the lobby and restaurant looked beautiful. Swimming pool looked clean and the fortress room was fully stocked. A Starbucks by the restaurant and they did a great job making drinks. The only down side to this location is no free breakfast. Which is fine, there plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Parking was less than $10 a night - which is a steal. And to top it all off, the room was amazing. We got a suite (that was not much more) and got a couch bed and a king size, and the view of the river was a sight to see. We have to come back often to see family, and will likely be staying here.

The restaurant server remembered what I ordered from a visit a few weeks earlier to the detail. The rooms are clean modern. I have stayed in their suites and their standard rooms and they are all nice with desk, a couch, and a table for eating that slides over your couch or chair. The bathrooms are nice with the rainforest combo and they are currently building a recency club. The only thing that I think they could do better every time I visit is to polish the water marks off the stainless faucet and handles If you book third party it is on you. Book direct and you are set.

Nothing to write home about but others around were complaining and I had none. Pool and hot tub area was nice and big. May not be back but I don't tend to try to accumulate Choice hotel points. We pulled into the parking lot and my first impression was that it looked a bit tired. That didn't deter me though. We walked into the hotel and there was a hostess almost immediately to the left of the entryway who took us into the dining room for dinner. The dining room is decorated in purple and black and I somehow got the memo to wear my Prince shirt. :) I loved the photography on the walls from back in the day. There was only one other couple dining when we sat down, so I was a little worried. Service was slow to start but it ended well. Our waiter was pulling triple duty while also acting as bartender and trainer. My drink about knocked my socks off. I'm pretty sure it was straight bourbon. The onion rings were yummy and my swordfish was pretty decent. It was prime rib night, but we didn't partake. All entrees come with a salad and bread basket, By the time dinner was over the dining room was moderately full. Lots of couples aged 70+. From dinner we headed to the arcade where some live music was starting. We stayed for a little while to play games and have another drink. I recommend the strawberry-like cocktail - Foxy Lady maybe. Numerous arcade games were out of order, but Zoltar and Skee-ball there and made up for it. The sunken bar is really neat. I love that the new owners kept it. We headed out around 8:30 but not before checking out the pool area. We couldn't access the pool because we weren't staying at the hotel, but got the gist through the window. A fun place to try! I think we spent around $150 on everything - drinks, food for two, games and tips.

It's so rude to the next dog owner. And to the establishment. I would raise the fee too. But then I would clean up after irresponsible dog owners so the next people don't have to risk stepping in it. I did tell them at the front desk as we checked out but it didn't seem to register with the person I told.
