Five stars for the entire team! While some Contractors are skilled at design, or communication, or timely construction, or quality work - the Lighting Geek actually represents a well-rounded team of experts. Tommy responded quickly with a visit and a detailed price quote. Despite being very busy (due to everybody wanting to get their outdoor spaces in shape for Covid-safe entertaining) Tommy invested a great deal of time discussing different design approaches, listening intently, and offering ideas. I am a Landscape Architect, so I am naturally a bit OCD about landscape design - but the photos should give you an idea of the depth of Tommy's design. But, again - the Geek is a team. Anthony and his co-workers did a super job installing the equipment despite Covid, wildfires, and equipment challenges. How many Contractors installing items actually ASK you questions regarding specific details? Well, Anthony not only asks the client questions, but he responds quickly and followed through on each detail. Finally, kudos to Jill who keeps the entire team coordinated, organized, and on time. She did a very good job at billing and handling requested additional services (at a very fair price) as well. In short - Team Geek rocks. Bidding, design, construction, add-ons, and billing was a great experience (in spite of wildfire smoke and Covid). And our landscape has never looked better.

I discovered The Lighting Geek at the Alameda County Fair and knew that these guys were different than what I am used to with home improvement companies. Starting off with customer service these guys have it going on. The owner came to my home and gave me his recommendations and I threw in one of my own ideas. The crew that came out worked all day and into the night to complete one of the best home improvement projects installations I have ever done. Professional lighting done right isn't bargain but well worth it for making my back yard useable at night. The space looks and feels completely different. Highly recommend this very professional and well run company. Worth every penny.

A branch of one of the oaks lit in our backyard, from the picture window next to our bath tub.

Tommy did the lighting on our property after we bought a house a year ago. We found several DIY options and a couple of landscapers who did lighting as one facet of their business, but nothing that really made us comfortable with plunking down a good chunk of change to light the land around our house. I found The Lighting Geek on Yelp and gave them a call. Tommy came out to the house, walked the property entirely, and made recommendations. Besides the fact that his business is entirely focused on landscape lighting, I knew he was someone I wanted to work with because his first reaction upon walking in our front door and seeing our large picture windows that had old oaks outside them was, "oh man, I'm going to light those oaks up and it's going to feel like you're in a tree house!" It was a genuine excitement about the creative side of something that most of us just accept as a mundane "Home Depot project" that we'd rather pay someone else to do. We made the decision to put in 15 lights via Tommy's proposal (it was our one item we were allowing ourselves to sink good money into right off the bat), and scheduled the installation. The crew arrived on time, got the instructions from Tommy, worked all day, cleaned up entirely, and then Tommy returned at night to make sure everything was working, and more importantly that all the decisions on placement and angling was the way it should be. We walked around with an allen key and he adjusted the direction of any light that wasn't exactly right. A year later now, and we absolutely love the lighting. In fact, I'd say despite having reservations about the cost ("I can probably just do this myself with a couple of my buddies on a weekend") I can say that it is the item highest on the Money Well Spent List™ we've been keeping since purchasing our home. I have gotten multiple inquiries from neighbors about who has done our lighting, and a couple that have seen me in the daylight and said, "oh, you're the house with the beautifully lit oak out front, right?" and, "I live a little ways down the street, and can see the way you've lit the trees in the backyard - it's gorgeous." Despite having a list of items we thought we'd tackle first, we're currently in the process of deciding whether or not now is the right time for us to make additions to the lighting system because the return we've gotten from the initial investment has been so positive. If you want the cheapest option at all costs, then do not go with the Lighting Geek. However, if you want to know that the money you're spending is addressing the exact problem/issue you're looking to fix, and that the contractor you're hiring is committed to the quality of his product/work, the longterm results, and has a legitimate passion for the creative aspects of lighting your property, then I wouldn't recommend anyone but The Lighting Geek. Tommy really enjoys landscape lighting, and it shows.

I'm very satisfied with the workmanship this company provided for me the lighting is gorgeous and the backyard audio rocks thank you very much Tommy!

The three things that I was looking for, beauty, safety & security, were all achieved thanks to Tommy aka "The Lighting Geek" Herren. A special callout to Carlos for his excellent installation work!

We have over 300 oaks on the property - this is after the first day of installation.

Tommy took the time to educate me in why he wanted to put lighting in specific places and not in others.

When fixing an outlet in my home, Steve blamed the brand new dryer as being the issue and told me I'm not an electrician so I wouldn't know if the dryer is defective. The dryer was working perfectly fine until he "worked" on the loose dryer outlet. When he was told the power went out in the room when the iron was plugged in, Steve said you shouldn't iron in the bedroom anyway as it pulls too much electricity. What??? Apparently, there is more going on with the electricity in the home. Now other plugs are not working in the bedroom. What did this guy do to the house, oh but I guess that's the dryers fault too. DO NOT use this company, you will regret it. I will be contacting the Contractors State License Board.

I contracted Independent Electric to install a home EV charger back in July 202. I had no issues for 15 months -- I even referred them to family after. In late October 2022, my wall charger suddenly stopped working. Inside the junction box, a wire had overheated and melted its surroundings (see the pics below). I called the electrician from Independent Electric who told me he wasn't sure what the issue could've been but offered to repair it (not for free -- I was outside the 1yr warranty). After I told him I wanted to get a second opinion and have another pro check his work, he texted me that they were suddenly booked out for 3 weeks and recommended I get someone else to work on it. Not exactly white glove customer treatment. I ended up going with Bonney -- the new electrician said that while Independent Electric's work was spec'd correctly and what happened was likely a fluke, he did say that: - My breaker connected to the EV charging never tripped when it should have - The wire that had melted was not particularly durable (the new electrician used a more durable wire) The job that Bonney did looks far more professional and reassuring. This is a classic "you get what you pay for" -- you might save a couple of hundred dollars with Independent Electric, but you're not getting the best job done. Up to you if you want to risk that with high-voltage electricity.
