With little tiny washing machines that you can wash your pet hamster's underwear in, to huge gigantic machines, that serve like revolving rooms for your unmentionables. The dry cleaners has a nice service, the guy behind the counter knows the stuff inside out and can brim your pockets with change if you've got the dollar. For the 4 pounds mark you can probably wash your entire wardrobe (girls this may not apply) and they've got tons of dryers for sorting through afterwards. Word to the wise check closing time, it'll cost you a pound to recover your washed knickers if you left them their overnight.

In all seriousness though, this laundrette is really very different to all the others, it really offers something special. Not really, I'm just being silly, its normal. You can only ask for two things from a laundrette. One, that is smells like all fluffy and downy like babies. Two, that it delivers no nasty surprises. Atlas Laundrette delivers on both accounts. There's no nasty bill you weren't expecting, as its about four quid per wash. Never do you have to pay for two washes as no matter how many clothes you own (girls) it will all fit in their ridiculously big washing machines. Also, crucially, your clothes will come out clean and dry at the end of your visit. Finally, if you're like me and don't like the idea of sitting in a dry cleaners for hours, they offer a service where you can leave it and they'll wash it for you. Even this is relatively cheap, and it all comes back perfectly folded and ordered, just like you still lived with your mum. Done. Not too silly was it?

This new found confidence and independence even led me to the Liver Laundrette which was a novel experience to say the least as these are the kind of places I thought only existed on Eastenders. This place is warm and too noisy and on the whole is not a very pleasant place to have spend your time as all there is to really do is watch the monotonous spin of the machines as you wait for your clothes. In terms of convenience though this place is great as it is simple and cheap and if your washing machine has gone on strike as mine did then it is a real life saver.

Liver Launderettes are like spores. Not in a bad way, mind, but you can't seem to turn a corner in…read moreLiverpool without seeing one. The company just happens to be the biggest launderette operator on these British Isles and they're dotted all over Merseyside, handily located for all your washing needs. The reason I mention this one is it's one of the company branches which offers late night washing too, so you can indulge in many romantic, American-esque scenes like those cute ones in 40 Days and 40 Nights with Josh Hartnett and Shannyn Sossamon. Bless. Having opened their first launderette way back in 1951, they've gone from strength to strength providing washers and dryers for cityfolk ever since. They're slightly unique, more so than other launderettes anyway as the machines are larger than domestic washers and some can take on a whopping 33 pounds of laundry. No excuses for wearing your wash day clothes with these bad boys around! Yep, it's just about the only launderette that's willing to take on your king size duvet. A full wash will take around 25 minutes, and the dryers, with their large drum capacity, actually manage to make all your unmentionables easy-iron. Pretty good, huh? All in all if you're seeking a launderette in your local area, try and find a Liver. They're among the best.

Having 2 kids and a personal love of T-shirts means that I couldn't wait for the new machine to be delivered so it was off to the launderette to re-enact some retro levi's adverts/Eastenders episodes and try and get my washing done. It was fairly easy, a fiver for a big washing machine (takes around 45 mins) and an extra quid for the powder. Fairly straightforward, plus you can leave your stuff there whilst going for a wander as the place is manned.

So I started to take it there for a service wash, I can not recommend highly enough, everything is perfect. It is family run and I don't know where I would be without them - buried alive under a mountain of dirty clothes probably! When I finally moved into a house I didn't own a washing machine and besides the only place to fit one is in the worlds creepiest cellar - so I have continued to take our family washing here. To be honest, as a single working parent, knowing that at least one job, the washing, is taken care off by someone else is 'load' off my mind, excuse the pun. 5 star service, very happy, thanks guys, Sarah
