A successful Australian take on French classics with only occasional false notes…read more The rhubarb and apple turnovers are the stars; the high price intrigued me for a pastry this small but the balance of sweet, sour, bitter, the sugary crust and the layers of buttered pastry simply worked so well that I had to come back the next day and buy more. The apple pie was similarly well realised, with just enough sugar to balance out the acidity in sufficiently sour apples to set off the pastry. Again this perfect sugar crust. The peach danish was also a hit. The (wholemeal sourdough) bread is somewhat less successful in the sense that the bubble network is too dense, the bubbles too small; as a part time amateur boulanger I know just how hard it is to get this right, and at least they are evenly distributed and the salt is correct with a well caramelised crust. The pain au chocolat is perhaps on the level of a second quartile boulangerie in France, the same chocolate is used as the mass market ones there but the boulanger has chosen a lighter style than the heavy butter bombs that represent the best examples back home; similarly the egg glaze is not particularly shiny or present which is another missed opportunity for a Proustian madeleine for us frogs far from the pond. This is not a bad thing though, as you can enjoy more pastries in one go. The cookie was not really a cookie, more like a "sable" - a biscuit hard throughout. The addition of hazelnut is a difficult one, as it makes the texture crumblier and drier, less held together than a normal chocolate cookie would be. Finally, the churros reminded me of a stretched out canelé which is a very good thing indeed. It does mean quite soft, custardy innards which may be unexpected to those used to normal churros. I haven't tried the rest of the selection but appreciate their choice to focus on best selling, safe, classic items rather than do wild experimentation leaving half the stock unsold on the shelves and forcing the customer to think a bit more before trying something new.

Hominy bakery can be found at the bottom end of the shopping strip on Katoomba street. The small…read morelittle store is your old school type stuff with a different loaf special daily. Their specialty is a loaf using potato in the sourdough mix. The bakery also sells full sized cakes, slices, foccacia, danishes and more. I love how all the product signs have handwritten names on them, showing care for all that they do. The sandwiches look amazing too! Grab a cookie with the soft centre, apple turnover or a lemon curd and pistachio snail! Put it on your Katoomba visit list.

I'm glad to find a pizza place which is brave enough to have anchovies on their house pizza. That,…read morepaired with the olives makes for a salty pizza, but I do love salty. Great dough, excellent dough cooked perfectly. To be honest, one of the best non-wood fire pizzas I've ever had. The chicken in tomato sauce pasta was less of a tomato based sauce and was more like a butter chicken from your Indian takeaway. The fact that my wife used her worst pasta experience as a way to justify that it's not a terrible dish was a real red flag. She had to force it down. The desert was a great finish. Sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream allowed for a perfected mixture of hot and cold. Allowing each spoon full of ice cream to melt over the steaming pudding creating a river of creamy gold.

Perfect size for one person. She went with the seafood pizza and I went with the three sisters (when in Katoomba try to eat the 'localised pizza's :p). Three sister's pizza was basically chicken, avocado and fresh tomato. I found the chicken to be a tad dry and the pizza base not as soft and doughy as I normally like. Both pizza's could have used a bit more sauce on the pizza base as well. The deserts made up for my disappointment with the pizza. My friend ordered the chocolate pudding with hazelnut gelato drizzled with chocolate sauce and I got the sticky date pudding with hazelnut gelato and butterscotch sauce. The chocolate pudding was super rich. Chocolate intensity that a chocolate lover myself even questioned if I could've finished it. My friend however absolutely loved it! The sticky date pudding was perfect. Soft, warm with the right amount of butterscotch sweetness to accompany it. OVERALL With really only one main road in Katoomba you choices for food are limited to this stretch of road. Next time I think I'd be inclined to head further down the street in search of something better.
