I was just letting people know there were better options for the price, however at this point I'd also say given their reaction you have to wonder if part of their high review score isn't due to the ways in which they deal with bad reviews. TL;DR: The KAR Shop is a slick business where you will pay a premium for UX frills like logo branding, online customer case tracking, and text-based updates- including upsell solicitations that invite you to have additional repairs done- but where the value you will get for your money will be mediocre at best. If your experience is like mine then thousands of dollars of repair work will not resolve the issue that brought you there in the first place and you will end up returning multiple times with the same problem while the diagnosis goalposts keep moving and the costs keep ballooning. The good news is that all KAR Shop staffers I interacted with were polite and professional. The bad news is that despite three visits and twice being assured that the repair was successful, the A/C issue that brought me to KAR remains unresolved and I am out nearly two thousand dollars. Taking my vehicle to The KAR Shop was a total waste of money and a very costly misadventure for me. Here is a summary of the experience, with the worrying moments enumerated. Made appointment over the phone for my 2006 Honda CR-V for next week and described A/C issues. Was told A/C inspection was between one- and two-hundred dollars but that additional A/C servicing would run $300-$ 400. Got end-of-week text with link to an intake form. Completed form. #1) Got another text over the weekend asking me again to complete an identical intake form that was missing all the data I previously entered. After hours drop-off of vehicle Sunday. Filled out hard-copy form detailing A/C issues when leaving key in night-drop. #2) Was contacted Mon. A.M. and asked to summarize A/C issues as though I had not now twice explained my vehicle issues. #3) Got text later Mon. with invitation to authorize 8 additional repair items totaling ~$3,100, including replacing one windshield washer jet for over $100. #4) Got call end-of-day Mon. and told that A/C issue could not be found but that the upsold repairs were coming along. Car stayed overnight. Authorized hose-replacement repair for A/C. #5) Called end-of-day Tues. and told that A/C repairs could not be completed because the ordered part could not successfully be attached due to sizing mistake. Was told car would be kept another night. Got call Wed. that vehicle is done, works great, and A/C is nice and cool. #6) Arrived at shop Wed. eve and was given the keys to another customer vehicle. #7) Once key mistake was sorted, I started my vehicle and heard a new noise from the engine. #8) Began driving with A/C and within 5 minutes knew that it was not repaired. Called KAR to make return appointment and reported new noise from engine. #9) Staff member A tried to convince me that new engine noise was not new but was from one of the upsell repairs I had declined. Returned vehicle to KAR Thurs. Was called Friday and told that A/C now needed new fan for ~$500. I expressed frustration at the customer experience so far and staff member C said that I could have a discount and pay ~$325 instead. #10) Was later contacted by staff member B who had no knowledge of the new engine noise I reported. Staff B tried to convince me that it was an old CR-V suspension recall issue. I convinced staff B that it was a new noise coming from engine. #11) Was called back later by staff member A and told that noise was caused by one of the upsell repairs that was installed incorrectly. Was again told that vehicle is done, works great, and A/C is nice and cool. Picked up car on Friday when weather made A/C unnecessary, and didn't drive car again till following week, where I discovered within 15 minutes of using A/C/ that it was not fixed. This is where we now stand. The KAR Shop wants another $800 to keep repairing the A/C on my vehicle. They assure me that this is all that is needed to make it work, but of course they've told me exactly that twice already and were plainly wrong both times. It took me no effort at all to discover that neither repair was complete, so their quality control process is highly ineffective if not absent altogether. If for some inane reason you are looking for shade-tree mechanic results at dealership prices, then congratulations you have more dollars than sense and I guess The KAR Shop is perfect for you. However, if you value either your money or your own mental health, then you should steer very clear of this place. 1/5 stars. I really wish I could have given zero. read more

I thought I had a blown head gasket. I took the truck down to the Kar Shop and they proceeded to do tests and diagnostics and determined it was not a blown head gasket. They did a few things like a full radiator flush and thermostat replacement and got me back on the road much quicker than expected. Amy, Chris, and tech Adam all seem to be great people. Appear qualified in what they do but they always suggest unnecessary repairs and are misleading in their recommendations. They're close to me so I've had them check multiple vehicles of mine initially but I always leave skeptical and get a 2nd opinion. Three times in a row I've had the 2nd opinion come back different, far cheaper, and more reliable. read more

Would never recommend them. Other dealerships said we were taken. Diagnostic is always given first then the customer can decide on next step. We're in our 70's and now on foot and $600 should have helped in some way. Never a recommendation and Chris knows who we are.... read more

Used the KAR Shop for the first time today. Can't say enough good things about my experience. I called and talked to Amy, who was very friendly and helpful. She booked a same day appointment for an oil change and told me to expect to wait about an hour for the work to be done. When I got there, Amy greeted me by name and took my key. I waited less than an hour in the clean waiting room while I took care of some work on my laptop. Amy sent me a list of services recommended by the technician and I was able to pick and choose what I wanted done. Extremely low pressure. The tech even offered to blow out the cabin air filter instead of selling me a replacement. Everyone that came through the office was extremely professional in their interactions with both the customers and each other. This is a rare gem in this industry. I'll definitely be back. read more

Don't trust this business! When I picked up my car after they did a brake pad job font and rear. The brakes started locking up in about 5 miles. They said the rear calibers would need to be replaced. They charged me for the 2 rear calibers PLUS disassembly of the rear brakes again. The owner said that he did the test drive and all was OK. NOT. At this point the car was not drivable and the rear brakes were stinking and smoking. I was getting ready for a long vacation drive to Florida, that is why I had them check my brakes in the first place. After much heated discussion with the owner, Kevin the manager and the tech person that I left the car with they changed the price a little bit. They deleted the second dissemble charge. Still the cost was more than the local Firestone dealer had quoted me for the job. I tried to use an local business an got burned and disrespected. Never again THE KAR SHOP ! We have taken our cars to The Kar Shop for innumerable repairs since moving here almost 3 years ago. For reference, they are both15 year-old Subarus with over 120,000 miles each. We took our SRX for a second opinion/diagnostic to The KAR Shop after the dealership recommended several services. What we learned was there are honest, forthright business people at the KAR Shop. Prior to the comprehensive inspection, they explained what items typically show up on a 6 year old vehicle with 80+k miles. The inspection was completed in timely manner and they discussed every detail that was addressed. The difference between the KAR Shop and the dealership?? The KAR Shop suggested an alignment service ( that is not pressing) and the dealership suggested over $1400 of services. Each service the dealership recommended was not needed. This place is definitely one to stay away from. They nickel and dime the heck out of you. Not only that, but their prices are top dollar prices; you are better off taking your vehicle to a dealership as they will likely provide better work. They left grease on my seat, didn't put the caps back on my AC lines and charged me over $200 for an AC diagnostic when other places around town (we checked with 5 other places) all said the diagnostic would cost between $30 - $100 at most. I have been very pleased with taking my 4Runner to Kar Shop. I feel that they are honest, fair and do excellent work. They have provided excellent customer service and after going today I know that they will go above and beyond for their customers. With the Covid 19 outbreak I've been limited to the places I go because of medical issues. The Kar Shop has raised the bar on safety and care of customers. All wearing masks, plexiglass shield, completely sanitized my car upon completion of work and even left me a sanitizing wipe in my car to use. I was impressed that after using my credit card they used hand sanitizer. Little things like that make a BIG difference. Especially to a retired Biology teacher. If I could give less than one star, I would do it in a heartbeat. This place is such a scam. First, let me give you some background.... My security system in my car often tricks itsself into not starting. So, one day when it was doing this, I called AAA to tow it to the AAA recommended shop, in order to see if anything else was causing the issue. Wow, what a mistake that was. The man who helped me was incompetent, unprofessional and quite frankly just plain stupid. He charged me over 250$ JUST TO LOOK AT MY CAR. yes, you read that right. The shop seemed to be a top notch until the final straw came, the price was outrageous, the work was minimal, then when i got ready to take the car home-it wasn't fixed, the car is sitting in the lot waiting to be looked over again, for nearly $900.00 I got 1 used part installed, 1 $40.00 part, and some black tape on the wiring. Guess what...I don't think they will get it right, I think this shop is a rip off and I am reporting them asap to the BBB. *They charged $143.00 an hour labor for NOTHING...this is unbelievable, I feel like I'm living in the 90's again... read more
