Just wanted to update. It's been eight months since our visit with Mike, and as suspected we only needed one session. Odie is a changed dog, and EVERY DAY we still marvel at how much he changed literally overnight. Best money we ever spent, and if we ever add to our fur family, we're gonna bring in Mike as soon as he's familiar with walking on a leash. It was the best investment we could have made in our VERY spoiled dog. :)

My little Sammie waiting for my next instructions. She knows now she has to be invited off the mat.

A few months ago my husband and I were sick and tired of trying to train our French Bulldog and getting no results. So I found Mike on Yelp and set up an appointment for him to come and train both of our dogs. The Frenchie was the one with the most issues. Mike did an awesome job at explaining why dogs behave the way they do. It was like taking a class on dog psychology! Our dogs responded beautifully! They have so much more respect for us now and listen to all of our commands! Thank you Mike for teaching us how to teach our dogs!

The view from the breakfast table: Banjo and Shadow waiting quietly until we are done eating.

We adopted 2 dogs recently and needed help for several issues: barking, pulling on the leash, begging at the table, nervousness around people, play biting, and jumping. In particular, our 2 year old chihuahua mix Banjo would not listen to ANYTHING we said. Mike arrived, and Banjo did his usual thing, barking nonstop. Mike established himself as the alpha, which made Banjo throw an epic tantrum. Screaming, yapping, biting, peeing, and pooping ensued (all from Banjo, not from Mike!). It wasn't pleasant, but Mike had warned us that these things could happen, and at the end of the tantrum, Banjo was clear about who was in charge. Mike taught us how to communicate with the dogs, and we practiced the alpha walk exercise with Banjo. I thought there was no way that this dog would ever be calm and obedient, so I almost had a heart attack when I turned around and saw Banjo sitting quietly at Mike's feet, with the leash on the ground! In public! At the end of the exercise, when Mike took the leash off of Banjo and stepped back, Banjo went straight over to Mike (not us) for approval and affection, which showed me that Banjo really understood Mike's message. Since the session, Banjo has performed beautifully in our alpha walk practice. I never thought I would be able to meander on the street with a completely loose leash, Banjo quietly trotting behind or beside me and stopping immediately when I stop. We are still working on the barking, but he is definitely improving. I feel like we have a dog we can finally work with, and Banjo seems much calmer and happier overall. Sadly, during our session, our other dog Shadow broke out of our yard and ran away. We were devastated and I emailed Mike to let him know. He called me right away with lots of tips on how to go about finding her and lots of reassurance that lost dogs are usually recovered. He was right -- Shadow returned on her own that night! She's a nervous dog, and her anxiety was up again after the escape, but we've seen a noticeable improvement almost immediately after practicing the techniques that Mike taught us. It's only been a few days since we met with Mike, but I am truly amazed at the improvement. Now when we eat, the dogs run to their open crates and sit quietly until we are done. When we go outside, they wait inside the threshold until we allow them to come out. And today, they have been sitting on the floor quietly until I invite them to jump up on to the couch. My husband doesn't like spending too much money on the dogs, but even he says the K9 Mentor was worth every penny! I would recommend Mike to anyone who has issues with their dogs. He has also been very patient with all of my questions and emails both before and after the session. Thanks, Mike!

Klouds is calm and able to listen to mommy and daddy. Thank you uncle Mike! ^_~

Ask the Community - The K9 Mentor

I just rescued a "1" year old street dog from Mexico. She is an IG/chi mix and very timid. She is friendly to everyone but my husband. She gets really aggressive around him, barking and lunging and has even snapped at him. Can you help?

Please review our website www.thek9mentor.com or contact us by phone (949) 229-2789 to discuss specific training questions. Thank you.

I have a 6 year old chihuahua turning 7, he's always been aggressive towards other people including his household.. only listens to our father + he's very protective over him. My question is, would it be to "late" to get him behavior corrected?

I can train a dog at any age but usually the people need to learn what to do with the dog to change the behavior. If he unwanted behavior has been going on for several years it takes a lot longer to change.

We just adopted 3yrs old Bloodhound mix boy who has super strong separation anxiety. He's been breaking the door frame, blinds, windows, even broke and escaped from his crate while we were out for getting his treats and toys. What should we do...?

You'll want to hire a trainer. Visit www.thek9mentor.com for more info. When you call, the recording that greets you will answer your questions as well.

Hi so I have a 1 year old lab/pit mix who's agressive is this something that can be trained?

Be cautious if a trainer is willing to answer this question without more info first. For me to be able to give you an honest answer, I would need to discuss the situation with you first. Please call 949-229-2789 and I'll be happy to help you out.

Hi! I left two voicemails but have not heard back. Are you accepting appointments? Thanks!

I am. You left one yesterday and one today. Unfortunately I am traveling yesterday and today and will not be able to return calls until tomorrow. I try to get back to clients promptly but it can take a few days at times.

Do you think k9 mentor can help me with my 6 month old pup. I just adopted him and he shows a lack in socialization with other people and dogs. He is also very anxious, do you think he could help me with this problem?

I should be able to help. Call me at 949-229-2789. Please listen to the entire greeting before selecting an extension.

What is the cost for the in-home training?

Do you work with aggressive pure bred rottweilers?

Each situation is different and not so simple that I can say if I could work with your dog. Please call us at 949-229-2789 and we can discuss it further.

However, I can tell you now from experience this actually works very well. However, this is for behavioral correction. If you have a naughty dog that is jumping all over people, barking at everybody, jumping on your furniture, not getting along with other dogs -- then this is for you. If you want your dog to listen to commands like sit, stay, down, place -- then this is probably not for you. I am very grateful for The Dog Guru. Our dog was jumping all over our five-year-old daughter and her friends resulting in at least one crying kid every time. Our dog would jump all over the furniture and almost know that she wasn't supposed to be doing it yet, wouldn't listen to our commands. Sure enough one 2 hour session and this was all corrected. The methods are not for the faint of heart however, but trust the process and the results will speak for themselves. There is no physical harm being done to your animal, in fact there is no negative physicality to it at all - he wouldn't have so many great reviews if there was. Just a very direct process to assert yourself as the leader of the house. Thanks again, Dog Guru!

We were so happy with everything that we decided to progress further by sending her to his 2 week boot camp at 16 months old. It honestly brought back the feeling of being a first-time parent--questioning every decision, but without a nurse hotline for guidance. My husband and I were especially struggling with how to manage Chloe around our young kids. She was very unruly, reactive on walks, and difficult to control around other dogs. We found SoCal Dog Training through a friend's referral, and choosing Vladae ended up being one of the best decisions we've made. I'll admit, I was skeptical at first--so many trainers promise results--but Vladae truly delivers. The onboarding process was seamless. The initial FaceTime consultation helped set clear expectations, and I really appreciated how upfront and honest he was about the work required. What stood out most to me was his long-term commitment--knowing I could always come back for refreshers gave me a lot of confidence that I wasn't just getting a short-term fix. The training sessions are where the transformation really happens. After each session, it genuinely felt like we had a new dog--but that's also where the responsibility comes in. You have to consistently follow through with the exercises he gives you. In many ways, it reminded me that investing in my dog's future takes the same consistency and commitment as investing in my two kids. She's now quite literally my third kid. Chloe used to be extremely reactive--barking, pulling on the leash, and even jumping up on our toddlers. Vladae helped me understand the root of her behavior and showed me how to properly address it. Now she's calm, more confident, and walking her has become something I actually enjoy. Seeing that transformation has been incredibly rewarding. It wasn't an easy process, but it was absolutely worth it. Also, a special shout-out to Antonina for being so kind, responsive, and accommodating with scheduling.

As he settled in my home, he became increasingly aggressive towards other people -- friends, family, and strangers alike, whether in the home or outside of the home. Sully was even aggressive towards my husband, and it felt like I was at a loss. I needed to do something before he actually ended up hurting someone. After explaining what was happening with Sully with the organization I was fostering from, they said they would need to put him down for the safety of the community. I couldn't let that happen, so I decided to keep him and find professional help. This is where John came in. After doing research online, I came across his Yelp page, where there were raving reviews of him helping aggressive dogs, so I took a chance. On his first day meeting John, Sully growled, hissed, and lunged at John. Sully tried to bite both him and me. John spent about an hour with me explaining what was going to happen and some training basics, and honestly, it was hard for me to focus because I was so nervous of Sully hurting someone in the moment. John was very patient, and showed me 5x how to hold a leash properly because I just couldn't focus from nervousness. I've never seen Sully so aggressive, and John explained it's because it was the first time someone was checking him and keeping him in his place. Sully stayed with John for a little over two weeks, and in that time, they went on ADVENTURES. I mentioned to John that Sully was afraid of water, aggressive with strangers, and other very specific things, and John made sure to tackle all of them. He sent me pictures and videos of his adventures throughout their time together. They went on a ferry, hiked to a waterfall, and so so much more. When there was a concern or something to celebrate, John was sure to communicate with us what was going on. In addition, due to personal circumstances, we needed to have Sully stay with John a few more days, and John was so understanding and accommodated us. I finally have my sweet boy back, and I see so much of a difference. He is calmer, more responsive, and he's running through my sprinklers now. LOL. It still takes him a bit to warm up to other people, but he's not as on guard or on edge as he was before. I'm excited to continue his progress at home, and I'm sure we will see John and Sara for future stays! Here are just a few of my favorite pictures of his adventures with John and Sara. :)
