So the first time we were here, the album cover paintings stood out to us. Of course I know all of them and love many of them but per usual, anywhere that features artwork for King of Pop Michael Jackson is immediately good in my book! I started with a Mocha Martini, which is basically adult chocolate milk and I am totally OK with that. For lunch, I ordered their Big 1/2 Burger w/ Fries because it's been a while since I've had a burger. The offer toppings but I'm a plain burger person, thus the photo with only cheese. It's a really solid burger with a great brioche bun. The fries were seasoned well but not super crispy so I didn't eat a lot of them. My wife ordered the BLT which should come as a shock to no one. I'm reasonably that anyone could look at the photo of the BLT and not need to read a review. She loved it. Her only mild critique was that she thought there was a bit too much tomato, but that's easy enough to dispense with so no biggie. I'm glad we ate here this time.

They're located at 1529 University Blvd North, so not all that far from us, which is great. This review originally appeared in the Jacksonville Fun, Eats & Drinks Facebook group. We stopped in here once before, many years ago. The reason for only stopping in once was because they allowed smoking, which I can deal with to an extent but it was like walking into a wall of smoke back then. I saw on their IG account that they've made a bunch of improvements both to the bar itself and the menu. So I figured we'd give try again. I'll get this part out of the way early: they're still a smoking bar BUT our experience today was FAR different than it was a few years ago. I'd read about how they installed a bunch of new filters and so on. So I thought "if nothing else, we'll walk in with good intentions. If a wall of smoke hits us, we'll make a u-turn and go elsewhere". I was happy when we got there and there was no smoke wall. There was faint smell of smoke but it wasn't bad at all. So whatever they did / are doing is working IMO. I don't know if they had food back when we stopped by years ago but I can tell you they have great burgers now. They had a deal going today where all the burgers were buy one, get one half off. We started with Jalapeño Poppers, then I picked the Bagger (mushroom & swiss) burger with tots and my wife chose the Dyna (the standard cheeseburger) with waffle fries. The poppers were standard but good. The bartender suggested the Sweet Chili sauce to go with it. Sweet Chili sauce isn't my thing but it's definitely my wife's thing. She said "I would eat this with a spoon" lol. So for her, the sauce elevated the poppers to above standard. The burgers were pretty great, in both of our opinions! I'm a pretty slow eater for one reason or another and my wife pointed out that she's never seen my eat a burger as fast as I ate that one. So I'd say that's my taste buds telling me I thought it was great. I judge my wife's thoughts on burgers by how many times she tells me she likes it with her mouth full while eating it. That happened about 4 times today lol. We (she) had fun with bingo while we were there even though she didn't hit a bingo. She came close a few times and had fun, which was the distraction we were looking for. The bartender and cook are both worth a mention in this post. Jen was the bartender but she was really all over the place, taking care of the people at the bar along with us and others at tables. She was really nice while doing that, too. Tammy was the cook. We met her because she came out to ask how the burgers were and really seemed to care about the feedback and the fact that people enjoy what she's making. I'm glad we stopped by again. As I said, I totally understand how/why a place that allows smoking isn't for many folks. That's why I'm dropping 4 stars instead of 5. However, my wife went from saying "well I guess we'll never go in there again" several years ago to saying things like "the next time we come here" during today's visit. So if you can tolerate a low amount like her, you may want to try stopping in to see what you think.

Very cute and clean for a "dive bar". I asked the bartender how the dirty martinis were and he said spectacular. And it absolutely was. I asked for kettle one and he suggested grey goose since they were $8 on sundays.... Ugh yea grey goose it is I knew it was going to be good when he asked if I had an olive preference. I got 2 blue cheese olives. I had to run to my lunch reservation but excited to be back for an after lunch martini. Maybe I'll get an espresso martini, a group came in while I was there and order an espresso martini, and it looked amazing.

I always tip in excess on our behalf. But I've never experienced blatant prejudice/racism like I experienced tonight. Around 2am, there were a few stragglers in the bar, including my grandfather & I. We all had drinks left, but the bartender snagged what was left of my grandfather's beer & poured it down the drain, forcing us out. I protested because the other party not only still had drinks left, but WALKED OUT OF THE BAR with them. Meanwhile, we were told we could complain outside. Respectfully, this establishment will never get my business again. EDIT: Went back the next evening to try to clear the air with the bartender. Not even moments after walking through the door, he looked at me & pointed to the door.. "OUT!!" I told him I only came to speak to him. He demanded I leave or he would call the police, so obviously I left. But yeah, to hell with Tradewinds. David is the assholes name by the way. Jason is the better server for sure.

I'll let the photos from other reviews do the talking, but if you enjoy a good backstory, ask about the history of the space. My mission for the night was simple: end the evening with a great gin cocktail. I started with the Donna Bella from the menu. It was well made, but I thought the bitters were a little too forward for my taste. Next, I asked for an off-menu modification: a Water Lily for Teresa, but made with Roku Gin. It was a strong contender--aromatic, balanced, and beautifully floral. If you're a fan of a French 75, this is a fun cocktail to explore. It's less citrus-forward and leans into a floral profile with a character that's hard to compare to anything else. For the final round, I went with bartender's choice. Mick asked a few questions about my flavor preferences and absolutely nailed it. They crafted a cocktail with Roku gin, snap pea cordial, aloe liqueur, egg white, lemon simple, mint, and citrus that was easily the highlight of the night. Fresh, layered, and memorable, it's a drink that deserves a permanent spot on the menu....Mission accomplished. If you're willing to wander beyond the barbershop business front and you consider yourself a spirit explorer, Volstead is well worth the visit. Go for a round...or two. If you're local, this could easily become your staple spot. For what it is, strong craft cocktail bar option. Bartenders choice is the way to go.
