Hummus Three Ways at the Lounge Bar

When it comes to The James Hotel, we may very well be their biggest fans! We love them so much that we stay here even though we live just across the river within easy walking distance from the hotel. We like to think of our stays there as taking the concept of a luxurious, spoil-yourself stay-cation to the next level. The first thing people say to us when we talk about The James is: "It's expensive, isn't it?" Our response is that people should check it out and be prepared for a pleasant surprise. We routinely book a premium, one bedroom suite with a balcony and sublime river view for under CDN $300/night (all in). A boutique hotel of this quality could easily cost two to three times as much in Canadian cities like Toronto or Vancouver, and at least four times as much in more "exotic" locales like New York or London. To have a property that offers this level of well-appointed elegance topped off with first-class service in our small (but mighty) prairie city is a blessing. THE ROOMS We always book a one bedroom suite, so there's a lovely spacious living room and a balcony with a beautiful river view. It's well worth enjoying a bottle of chilled champagne on a warm night. The bathtubs are big enough to allow a long luxurious soak, and the bed is so comfortable we sleep like babies. There's loads of closet space in both the living room area and the bedroom with lots of full-length mirrors. Now, to the confessional: we are irredeemable, unapologetic hedonists, so it should surprise no one that the twin lodestones of our love of their rooms are the bedsheets and bathrobes. Yes, we know - you've slept on lots of lovely, Egyptian cotton, or even silk, sheets - so have we. And yes, there are lots of lovely hotel bathrobes out there - but not like the ones at the James. Just trust us on this one; once you experience the soft, buttery textures and accompanying skin nirvana, you'll understand and will, like us, dream about these sheets and bathrobes long after you leave. Also, they have a delicious approach to their turndown service. You might have guessed by our username that we are just a wee bit obsessed with food. We found two very tasty, freshly baked, bite-sized brownies with toasted almonds waiting on our bedside table. Such a civilized way to usher in an evening! And what makes this the best turndown service EVER is that those amazing sheets are there for the touching as you savour the brownie. Did we mention the sheets? J THE HOTEL & SERVICE The pleasure of a stay at The James extends beyond the rooms. Prior to your stay you are sent an email asking about specific preferences and special requests - and they always pay attention and deliver on all counts. Upon arrival you are greeted at the door and with offers to help with luggage and the like, It's clear from that point, through to check-in and beyond, that employees are encouraged to maintain an air of casual refinement and sincere warmth. There is an elegant lounge and bar downstairs serving a nice selection of snacks. This is a perfect place to visit before or after (or both) a performance at the symphony or theatre, or to just have an adult conversation with friends (read: the atmosphere is refined, and quiet, allowing for conversation without having to yell across the table). THE BAR AND FOOD They serve great cocktails, conveniently organized by taste profile. The bar menu includes some tasty sharable small plates, for example: Blackened Tuna Cones - while the term "blackened" is applied very loosely, this dish is still delicious. Yellowfin tuna is wrapped up with avocado, quinoa, crispy tempura flakes, tarragon cream, and pea shoots to provide a delightful, light snack. Hummus Three Ways: Red pepper, Pesto and Baba Ganoush served with pita and veggies. The red pepper was a well-executed classic, and the pesto was the most interesting of the three. The Baba Ganoush came across as a bit bland, but the tasty pita bread made up for it. Warm Cheese Marinated Olives and Cheese Stuffed Jalapeno - while the olives were tasty, they weren't at all warm. The cream cheese jalapeno was tasty, providing just a little bit of a spicy kick. Stuffed Dates: Filled with maple mascarpone these fresh dates were accented with pistachios and prosciutto; they were absolutely marvelous! If you want a proper meal, you can always ask for one of the in-room dining menus. We shared an order of Crispy Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich and fries. It was a very generous serving of chicken served on a potato bun, and the fries were on point. One serving was all we needed to round out our afternoon of snacking before taking in a show. BREAKFASTS Breakfasts are included with the room. Two out of three stays the breakfasts were wonderful, and once they seemed to be struggling a little. We'd guess there were some bumps related to new staff. The breakfast area is a comfortable room that features a combination of table service and small, but very fresh, buff

Stayed at the James for an entire week and loved every minute of it. The location is excellent and within walking distance of shopping and the river. First off the staff is simply amazing. They always took great care of our every need and made us feel special. Maria in the breakfast room was so delightful and we looked forward to seeing her each morning. The breakfast is so great and free with the room. Cooked to order omelets, eggs Benedict some days also. I wanted a fried egg and they gladly made me one also. There is a variety of fruits, breads, meats, cheeses ect.The coffee was great also and having a cup while looking out the window was a great way to start each day. The room was very comfortable and so clean and inviting. We had a river view suite. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom large and clean. Great water pressure and plenty of hot water. Our suite had 2 rooms. The bed room and a living room type area. There is a very comfortable couch and a coffee table that was great to relax on and watch the flat screen tv. If the weather is nice you can sit on the balcony with a great view. The cleaning staff always did a great job and made sure we had fresh coffee pods as well as bottled water each day. I could go on but lets just leave it at this. Stay here because I know you will love it.

    Turn down service.

I spent last night at this hotel…read more The room ($189/night) isn't huge ... the bed is REALLY comfy! My room is across from the "Associates room" (maid's supply room) so from 8am onwards the door was constantly being opened and closed very loudly ... very annoying if you are trying to sleep in or work. It seemed like it was very 20 seconds!! WIFI is free. There is a safe in the closet. Parking is $15 whether you park your car yourself or have it valet parked. Considering how cold it was, there was no incentive NOT to have it valet parked (my rental car was parked in the garage rather than outside ... which means I could get it in five minutes rather than 15 minutes because they didn't have to warm it up as long). There was a fridge in the room but it was locked since it was stocked with water, juice, liquor, etc. (I didn't bother getting a key). There is no microwave oven but the girl in the convenience store popped some popcorn that I'd brought for me (thanx!). The fella who checked me in was very friendly and chatty. There are a couple restaurants in the hotel ... a steakhouse and a more casual one called Windows. I had breakfast at Windows this morning. I ordered two fried eggs, home fries, toast and Canadian bacon ($14) and a glass of milk. Everything was cold and I didn't have time to have them fire up another breakfast. There is buffet for $15 ... that must have been where my breakfast came from. Hungry and not happy :( I was happy with this hotel and would have stayed here again ... until the the noise of the Associates room started and my breakfast was cold. If I'm back in Saskatoon, I'll stay elsewhere.

The rooms were clean, organized, and well kept. I love the breakfast club on the 8th floor, a wonderful view to start the day. The lovely lady serving breakfast is extremely sweet and kept us full and happy. She's very welcoming and brought me soy milk when I told her I can't drink dairy. The water slide is definately a must! Just don't try to compete with teenagers, their bones aren't as brittle as some adults. I think I fractured my ribs when they doubled dare me to go with them. I can't cough or sneeze without crying like a baby. I met a couple of wonderful people at this hotel and hope that I'll meet them again. I wished I dined at the restaurants on the ground floor but our time was limited. I'll definately return!

I do like that this is a local family owned business, rather than a corporate chain property. Stayed here for several nights while visiting Saskatoon. It is in a convenient location as it is close to downtown and Midtown, but it is situated close to the University Bridge and the University of Saskatchewan. It is also right next to the Saskatchewan River. I guess that where the luxury comes in. Alas, my room had no real view. It was located in an annex building and seemed to have a basement room vibe as I could vaguely see apartments outside the top of my window. It was basically a back room as the closest entrance leads into the parking lot and a back exit. Still, the room had what I needed, including a mini fridge. I did like the bath toiletries that they provide, which were very fragrant and touted as indigenously owned. The hotel does have a lot of amenities, including a restaurant, an Irish pub, a comedy club and a liquor store in addition to a pool and fitness centre. While the room that I had was not the nicest, it suited my needs. I would recommend this hotel if you are particular about location. If you are looking for a hotel with a nice view of the river, this would be one of the options I would suggest.

The tap water used for tables spits out gross black stuff sometimes so staff just pick it out. I think it would be an okay first job for Someone who doesn't know any better but keep in mind there's no training, you just gotta know it or you'll be fired on the spot. Aswell the boss overshares her at home life and shows her staff Inappropriate marks on her body and leaves work to go do things with people On company time:/. I think it would have great potential if there was a different manager. The upstairs restaurant is much nicer, cleaner and the manager is great! food is Fresh and the staff are wonderful. highly recommend the restaurant:)!!!

I'll be honest my previous impression of Hampton Inns were motels off interstates in the middle of nowheresville, USA. I've been to so many hotels on the continent from this brand to that brand and never really gave them much more than a moment's thought. Wow was I ever WRONG. I was so wrong I'm not ashamed to admit it and I am overly impressed with this hotel from the check in, cleanliness, politeness of the staff to the overall ballerness of this room which for me is only a single night stay close to the airport for a really early flight out. The check in desk even called me back about 10 minutes after settling in to ask if everything was to my satisfaction. What makes this hotel stand out like a diamond in the rough? It's always, the little things. The little things that make things better and just add up to an aggregate kick ass place. Some of the things I see in this particular hotel room are little pluses such as: -textured wallpaper -wooden hangers I can take off the cross bar! -modern stainless lamps -a large Samsung HD tv (50"?) -a bright large bathroom with a gazillion towels -Neutrogena soap products -plugs everywhere for all my electronics including USB ready power -all modern furniture and new rock surface tabletops -multiple tea and coffee packets in room -fridge, microwave, stainless organizer drawers -THICK WALLS -big comfortable couch -King bed -overly spacious room -immaculately clean This room is so clean I feel like I'm the first person using it. The sink didn't have a single water spot. I feel like I'm on a set. The layout of the room is a nice refreshing twist. Instead of the bed being on the side wall it's adjacent to the door and faces the window. While the view is not exactly Manhattan it's a nice clean open view and the room feels as spacious as outside. The space here seems almost unreal. I've been in rooms 1/3 the size in NYC. The vending and ice machine is in a seperate room no where near any guest room by the elevator. This ensures no noisy ice buckets being filled by you. I stayed at the Hyatt in Orlando International airport and those walls were made of bristol board. These walls are thick and I can't hear a thing from any other room which means I can blast my portable Bose speaker and not worry about disturbing a neighbor. Free parking, complimentary internet with my booking, airport shuttle, complimentary breakfast although I'm leaving too early to partake. I mean sure there are many things this hotel has that other hotels may have but this place is the complete package for business travelers. For the price considering how much hotels are in Saskatoon from all my other previous visits this place is so worth it. I don't come to Saskatoon very often but I'll make sure moving forward that Hampton Inns will be on my radar for the future. This Hampton Inn is the nicest, cleanest, most modern, friendliest, professional hotel I've been in a very long time. I can't believe I only paid what I paid to stay here.

Good breakfast, clean and comfortable, although the television service is not up to par.read more
