It was also difficult to walk through the store as everything was pretty tightly packed in. The lady who checked me out was very kind. We had a brief discussion about the interview I was waiting to attend. She told me to remember to just keep breathing, which I appreciated greatly. Besides that interaction, no one else in the store talked to or approached me. It would have been nice to be welcomed in. Altogether, though, a very sweet shop ! With a ton of variety.

There are art books, foreign language books, references, sci fi, mystery, romance, kids books, and more. It's not necessarily cheap, but the selection is eclectic. Their discount books bring me in, too, but I inevitably leave with a stack. My father did this. I inherited volumes from him, and added to it, refining the collection along the way. It's plainly stunning to see the variety of content available here. This store is a magnet for the mind. As I mentioned in my prior review, it's not as large as Powell's in Portland, or has the karma of City Lights in San Francisco, but in a way, it's close the same magnetism you feel in a really good used bookstore. Plan to spend time, and go oomph when you carry the stack when you leave. It's a dangerous place, with dangerous ideas. Go there.

I decided not to take the offer and then when I loaded up the books I noticed that there was a rare valuable book missing. When I confronted the owner about the missing book he played dumb and then when I started looking around behind the counter and stated that I saw him with it and told him the title, he conveniently found the book tucked under his desk right next to his leg. He tried to steal the best book and was going to let me pack up and leave. Luckily I noticed. The owner is a thief.

Even with all the space they look pretty busy whenever I pass by, but that's only been on weekends, so it may be quieter during the week. On a weekend afternoon, though, you will not find quiet here. They have all the standard drinks you expect at a coffee shop and lots of fun specials, but the food selection is a little limited. I think they normally serve soup Mon-Sat but they were out when I got there. I got a bagel with schmear, a zebra (chocolate crinkle) cookie, and one of the February specials called "Opposites Attract" which was a raspberry chai latte. Everything I got was pretty good, especially the fresh, chewy zebra cookie. They warmed it up which made it just a little gooey. The raspberry chai was an interesting combination. i wasn't completely sold on the raspberry - I didn't dislike it but probably wouldn't get it again - but I think I liked the chai itself. The baristas and bookstore staff were all welcoming, and the vibe is very inclusive. I've come in and looked around the store a few times, and the staff seems approachable if you need anything but will leave you alone if you're just browsing.

What's not good is downright ridiculous. For some reason, instead of fiction having nice wide open spaces where you can peruse books and find something new, it's now mostly in an aisle just wide enough for 2 people to stand in. Imagine standing in front of a bookshelf that goes from the floor to 6-7 feet in the air. Imagine not being able to back up more than a step or two and trying to see what's on the shelf. It's not an easy feat. Meanwhile, there is a great open sea in the middle of the store that's wide open. Clearance, you'll be happy to know, now takes up the former fiction spot. So the books that are easiest to see are the ones nobody really wants. Makes perfect sense. In other ideas that clearly make perfect sense, with fewer DVDs on the shelves these days, an upper shelf that is very convenient to browse has a few titles with the cover side out. The bottom shelf, where almost no one wants to go, is still full of product. Changing something and improving it is welcome. Changing it and actively making it worse sucks. I used to spend a fair amount of time browsing. Now I hit a couple of areas and I'm done. Oh - whoever decided putting a dvd rack by the exit should not be making important decisions. Ever. If I were a student here, this is one place I would hang out to study, meeting with friends, and put my parents up at their hotel. I wandered the building for quite a while before I found the bookstore. University bookstores have evolved into more of an emporium for branded merchandise, which this store has in abundance. There's also a nice selection of books, some stationary supplies, and a space selling tech-related equipment. There's even an architecturally impressive multiple story open room that's also a nice study space. I picked up a calculator (yes I'm old school) and a few tchotchkes, and I was on my way, perhaps too soon.

The IU campus bookstore is well stocked; however, it is small and overcrowded making it hard to view all the merchandise. My boyfriend and I came to purchase six sweatshirts for gifts. When I asked if there was a fitting room, the sales lady replied with a curt no. Obviously, customer service or being an ambassador for the University was not thought of when hiring her. We told the sales lady we had come from Georgia for Thanksgiving and were visiting IU for the first time. We also told her we were planning to purchase a few sweatshirts as gifts and really needed to know how they fit. She had no compassion even when I asked if I could go try them on in the restroom. Unbelievable! I had to try on the sweatshirts on top of the sweatshirt I had on. In addition, there was only one mirror in the whole store. There were also several other customers wanting to try on items. Of course, after we made our selections and went to the counter with all six $55 sweatshirts, the sales lady was more than gracious.

I had over 12,000 comics at one point but finally gave them up when it was time to downsize our home. So when I entered this shop, there was a bit of nostalgia, especially when I saw the boxes of "vintage" comics sitting on a stand in the middle of the main room. What surprised me was that there were three rooms inside the shop. The comics and graphic novels that lined the shelves were grouped in the rooms by major brand, or children's, or independent offerings. I was the only customer mid afternoon on a Friday, so I was able to discuss the industry and offerings with the man behind the counter. Very friendly gentleman who brought me up to date on the major trends in comics/collecting. For those of you who are comic readers/collectors, know that this shop is devoted to the reading materials, not so much on the collectibles that some of the shops in the Indy area offer. But if you are into reading, I would say this shop has a wide variety on hand and seems like they will work with you to try finding something if they don't. Regarding their price gouging, this is what they had to say. Read their response below. Does it really take a million years to manually override a price "error" supposedly to have originated from the "automatic repricer"? When did the so-called automatic repricer ever become so widely used in pricing one of a kind set of used books? Did manually uploading a picture somehow triggered the automatic repricer? Why even bother to lie when such lies can be caught instantly? Could they ever do the very same thing to any of their walk-in bookshoppers: raising the penned in price by 150% on the spot they handle the book to the shopper/buyer/inquirer? Did they somehow fail to realize how offensive such price gouging really was 4 days AFTER receiving a customer complaint message? Update on 2/8/2023 Turns out the owner Joe decided to pull this book off Amazon and relisted it at $79.97 on eBay, which is $20 less than the jacked up price of $99.97 on Amazon. The book was sold on 1/31/2023.
