Disappointing Ethics and Neglect at Sanford School…read more Sanford School markets itself both as a premier educational and athletic institution, but our firsthand encounter has been far from satisfactory. I am deeply saddened, and disappointed in the lack of integrity, ethics, equity and professionalism displayed by Sanford School. Particularly in President Mark Anderson, and their girls' basketball program under Coach Marcus Thompson. Firstly, Coach Thompson's unethical practices have marred what should be a fair, equitable and enjoyable sporting experience for young female athletes. Coach Thompson has blatant disregard for DIAA rules and DE State laws. His commited offenses of Illegal recruiting practices, mental abuse, verbal degradation, and playing favorites are just some of the major issues never addressed by leadership. These are frequent daily occurrences and systemic issues going back as far as 15 years. They tarnish the integrity of the sport and the overall well-being of the players/students. When confronted about these issues, Coach Thompson, Pat Jones(AD), and Mark Anderson resort to gaslighting tactics. Attempting to discredit concerned parents by labeling them as "crazy". This behavior creates a toxic environment for the players and their families. When I raised my concerns with the administration, including AD Pat Jones and President Mark Anderson, instead of addressing the presented documented evidence of misconduct, I was met with dismissiveness and deflection. Rather than investigating the valid complaints brought forward by multiple families, they chose to vilify the concerned parents, portraying them as irrational and problematic. Furthermore, the lack of response and action from President Mark Anderson despite multiple complaints and emails from over 10+ families is disheartening. Despite the numerous families voicing their grievances and providing substantial proof of wrongdoing, the administration has chosen to turn a blind eye. It is evident that the school prioritizes the success of its basketball program (including the focus on revenue-driven recruitment tactics) over the well-being and fair treatment of its students and their families. Promises of basketball success and a great educational experience are nothing but empty words, as the reality paints a starkly different picture. As a paying "customer" of Sanford School, I expected transparency, fairness, and accountability from the leadership. Instead, what we have encountered is negligence, evasion of responsibility, and a blatant disregard for ethics and the law. It is clear that the school's focus is on revenue generation rather than upholding its values and providing a safe and nurturing environment for its students. In conclusion, I urge prospective parents and students to carefully consider their options before choosing Sanford School. The issues within the girls' basketball program and the leadership's refusal to address them reflect a deeper problem of misplaced priorities and lack of integrity within the institution. We originally signed up for Christ Church with head of school Kim Wagner who was absolutely…read morewonderful in accommodating our son into their 4 year long pre school program. We sent our son to Christ church for their 15 month program for the 2023-2024 school year and loved it. When it came time to start the 2024-2025 school year we were surprised right before the start of school our son would be placed in the first year class again instead of moving up to the 2s and continuing the plan of the 4 year program they offer and he was the only student doing so. We enrolled in February of 2024 right when reenrollment was offered and we were never told that repeating a level could be a possibility nor would of been okay with it. When we first mentioned this to the brand new head of school Mrs. Abio she told us she would do whatever needed to be done to get him into the right level even if it required moving some things around. When we then met Mrs. Abio in person her tone had changed completely. She offered no resolution and instead only tried to convince us that after popping in on our son for two days she knew exactly where he was developmentally and that he was in the right place with children younger than him in their first year of schooling. She had no concern that we already saw our son was a lot further along than the children in his new class, she seemed to have no care for any of our concerns and wanted to tell us her plan for our child with none of our input. Mrs. Abio insisted that with our son's birthday he would be in two years of one level even though his birthday was similar to children he attended the first year with and would of continued on to kindergarten with at the same time. She boasted how the school always pairs with families to develop a plan and to figure out what parents want from the school but their was no such conversation with us. Mrs. Abio's handling of our situation and showing us her classroom ratio was far more important than building a relationship with a family and hearing our concerns led to our decision to withdrawal our son from CCEP. We know where our child is developmentally and it was not where he was placed even when we enrolled plenty in advance to reserve his placement. Let alone the fact she would not acknowledge that with her proposal he would miss an entire year of their offered program and be a year behind the entire time there. He would of had two years of level one which is 15-under 24 months, gone to two year old program when he was already 3 and then gone to 3s when he was 4 and completely missed their PreK level which is normally for 4 and up. Requirement for 2s was 2 by September 1st and his birthday is in June. The new leadership at CCEP has been extremely eye opening and disappointing. I would highly recommend looking into other establishments. This is not the school it was just a short time ago when we initially enrolled and it is very sad to see. A school that advertises themselves as one of the best pre kindergarten programs should hold themselves to a higher standard. EDIT: It is nice to know there is no priority for returning students in your 4 year plan leading to kindergarten. What you and Mrs. Abio fail to admit is that our son would of missed a whole year of the program before going to kindergarten. We declined your meeting because there was no point the decision was already made and you only reached out after all was said and done. The fact you stand by this decision and Mrs. Abio was so firm that she knew exactly where our son was just makes it more clear we made the right decision. Our son was the only RETURNING child in his class. That is a fact and the way we were treated was as we were an unwanted family and it was very upsetting. The teachers in the new class also informed us he was the oldest but I guess CCEP leadership likes to be dishonest and mislead. It has all been a very eye opening experience about a institution we thought was so great. All we asked for was the same program and treatment for our son as all the students he entered the school with because they were all going to kindergarten at the same time but that seemed to be too much to ask.

Before we even had children, we knew we wanted a creative and compassionate environment for our children as they grew up. A place where their self-esteem and self-efficacy would bloom. We've found that and more at NCCL. It is such a wonderful community, and we are so appreciative to be a part of it! I do not know the specifics of the negative review below, but the school is small (10 kids per grade level) and does not have the resources of larger schools. I can only speculate that would be why outside help was encouraged for any behavioral issues.

The learning is fun, interactive, and centered around the abilities of the students, and the hands-on methods of teaching allowed me to understand and apply concepts to real-life situations. I never had to ask myself "Why does this matter?" The teachers there were/are like parents to me, and I knew that I could always come to them with any struggles I might be having, emotionally or academically. The environment is safe and nonjudgemental; my NCCL family has truly shaped me as a person. Although I have had struggles with anxiety since an early age, the staff has always cared for and supported me in even my loftiest goals. When I was in eighth grade, I told my writing teacher, Kate, that I wanted to write a novel by the end of the year, and with her help and constant reinforcement, I completed it. Now, I am an English major with a Writing Concentration at Gettysburg College (minors in Literature and Studio Art). I had a 4.5 GPA throughout high school, and I now have a 4.2 GPA in college. I am a published author, journalist, and artist, as well as the editor for our on-campus literary and art magazine. None of this would have been possible without the support and aid of the teachers at NCCL, who encouraged me to think deeply, and pursue my interests doggedly. NCCL is the most accepting community that I have ever had the privilege of entering, and the staff works hard to accommodate students and families. They have plentiful compassion and experience when it comes to working with children with learning disabilities, and the environment of the school itself is welcoming and supportive to all. This school is a family, and I was so lucky to be a part of it. I will be forever grateful for my time at NCCL.
