By the way---this tour was very interesting & informative---everyone should take it!!! We realized it was mid-afternoon & we were STARVING & we didn't want to return to the Bentonsport area to eat. So we asked our tour guides.....where is the closest, best place to eat, on a Sunday. Both guides recommended the UNDERGROUND!!! And, we were very glad they did!!!! Upon entering the restaurant, we "instantly loved" the "creative decor". Re-purposing lead pipes, farm tools & equipment & using Edison light bulbs---they had created an ambiance unlike any other restaurant. The place was VERY CLEAN.....the light fixtures were very creative.....farm tools adorned the ceiling....the menu covers, salt & pepper/napkin holders were hand-made.....& we were the only customers in the restaurant (remember, it was mid-afternoon on a beautiful Sunday afternoon). The menu of "VERY REASONABLY PRICED MEALS" was extensive!! I chose a "chicken dinner"---knowing full-well that chicken ALWAYS takes longer to cook. However, this afforded us the opportunity to have a LENGTHY CONVERSATION with the AMICABLE OWNER, who was sitting in another booth. We didn't mind the wait, while her son prepared our meals, because she was "very entertaining & informative"!!!! Please forgive me, I didn't get her name. When our food arrived---it was hot, plentiful & delicious!!!!! This was a GREAT "all-encompassing experience"---terrific, inexpensive food, ambiance & conversation!!!!! Small communities in Iowa can't survive without a good restaurant. You're lucky, Salem, because you've got one!!!!!

The place was getting pretty crowded and I was picking up the chicken thirty minutes after the kitchen opened. Ok. Honest review. The chicken was juicy, moist and delicious. The next sentence bothers me: the skin was rock hard and burnt, oily taste. I smelled the old oil, first. Then, as I walked out, I noticed the cardboard box was full of oil on the bottom. I wondered how this chicken would taste if the oil was changed on a regular basis and the skin a benefit to the juicy inside meat. 5-Star review if oil was changed.

I've enjoyed very few red meats here, but they have goat & other offerings a couple times a week to offset the chicken & vegetarian buffet. I really like their setup & they're very reasonably priced as well. I never leave here hungry, I usually end up with a small to go box that takes care of dinner, too!! The goat was delicious! The stewed chicken & curried chicken have been quite tasty. So many good options for the vegetarians who want to eat my lunches food, how dare they! I usually go with 2 half entrees, no more than 3, & like I mentioned before, leftovers!! I haven't had any of the chow/low mein or any rice options as I'm dodging carbs, but it gets a ton attention from most patrons, so have at it!

The service was friendly, and fast. The overall surroundings were nice and 'homey', and everything was clean. After you order they give you a thing to put on your table and then they bring your order to you. Didnt have to wait long and a nice young man came by with our food. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and lattice fries meal for less than ten bucks. For this area, that is a good price for lunch. I dont remember if there was lettuce and tomato on the sandwich so I will pay closer attention next time. Fresh bun, good flavor on the chicken, and good spice level. The lattice fries were really good and salted just right. I couldnt figure out the ketchup at first, as it comes in a little plastic cup that you either pull the end off to squirt or peel the top back to dip. Same type of container for the chicken dipping sauce. These types of sauce containers make it hard to utilize all the ketchup or sauce. The pop was good. I wish there was a fountian where you could go back and get more, as the amount of ice in the drink seems to limit how much drink you are actually getting. The bathrooms reminded me of what you would get in a fancy hotel, from a design, cleanliness, and overall layout and function. Really impressed with that. Only suggestions would be to have fountain pop for refills, and have the condiments (maybe just the K and M) where the customer can squirt them out as needed. My coworker pointed out that the menu options are not a mile long. But I think we both agreed that they have figured out how nail a collection of items, and deliver a quick quality meal. I am going back, I am interested in consistency, how is it when they are busy, and is the service and quality the same from day to day. One thing I must add, is that if you want to replicate the chick fil a at home, get the red back chicken from aldi and, and get the dipping sauce they make. Aldi also has a bun that is the same. Makes me wonder if the chicken Aldi sells comes from the same people that make the chick fil a. It is that similar.
