He's there to give you a haircut, but he's also there to spread some knowledge. He showed me how he was cutting my hair and why he was doing it. His consultation was also very helpful, especially because I didn't know anything about hair and how to style it. I wanted to change the way my hair looked in both style and color, and John was there to give feedback and what he thought was in my best interest. I felt like he should have charged for his consultation because he spent a GOOD amount of time providing advice and feedback, time that's worth money, especially when I was his last client for the day and it was getting late. Because he didn't charge extra for consultation, I provided a good tip. What I wish beforehand, which isn't really John's fault, is how to enter the building. It was late, so the door was locked -- luckily, there was someone who let me in. If you ever encounter this situation, just text John and he'll come open the door for you! I have been getting Dominican blowouts my entire life.** I first went because the salon advertises Dominican blowouts. However, the results did not match what I expected from that service. The blowouts here typically only lasted about one day. I continued returning mostly because it was easy to schedule appointments since it's a one-woman business. After some time she began coloring my hair. While the coloring was initially better than the blowouts, the overall quality gradually declined over time. For example, during blowout appointments I was sometimes not placed under the dryer, which is usually a key step in a Dominican blowout. I eventually stopped focusing on the blowouts and mainly came in just for highlights, sometimes even urging her not to put me under the hairdryer because why bother. Despite consistently asking for bright blonde highlights, I noticed a pattern where the color sometimes came out darker than what I requested on some visits (it seemed intentional). I communicated my dissatisfaction and I was met with blame, unawareness and passive aggression instead. She had to fix my hair two days after coloring and highlighting (with more highlights) causing more stress on my hair-strands since it was done sloppy the first time. Another uncomfortable aspect was that personal conversations I had shared in the salon were later referenced in a way that felt inappropriate to me. After that experience, I regretted sharing personal information with her, but it's okay, what comes around comes back around. I also observed situations where other people's children in the salon were scolded by her, which felt unprofessional in that environment. Overall, the declining quality of the services and the way concerns were handled are the reasons I will not be returning. After we discussed about the color I wanted which was ashy brunette and after I agreed with the picture, Taylor proceeded to start working on my hair. My balayage color didn't turn out ashy at all but blonde and Taylor suggested I come back for touch up for toner after 2 months. I am not satisfied with the result as color was not what I wanted. If I had known that it would need more than 1 treatments, then I didn't have to take risk to drive to Arlington, I would have gone to my regular salon.
