PROS: This place remains one of my two favorite stores in Gettysburg for relics. The men that work here are knowledgeable and their inventory is plentiful. The prices are correct for what the items are worth and they're located near the center of town CONS: There's a woman that works there who isn't educated on many of the items. 5 September 2026 BACKGROUND I have been a dedicated customer for years and bought thousands of dollars' worth of antiques from "The Horse Soldier." And this last transaction affected me personally. I went into "The Horse Soldier" to make a $200.00 deposit, on the above date, on my layaway account, when a new employee made a mistake ringing up my account incorrect. I was worried that my account was effective by the new employee's mistake. So, I decided to exit the establishment and come back later, with other business in mind. When I returned to make a deposit on my account, one employee was giving me a hard time, and I decided to ask for the store manager. The manager stated that I was disrespected too the new employee when I told him, that I believed, he incorrected rung up my order for a deposit on my layaway account. Note, I never raised my voice. I spoke calmly with respect to all the employees that were present. After a brief discussion about my layaway account, in a low tune, I requested to speak to the owner of this establishment. When the owner came down to speak to me, he was very upset with me because he said that I was disrespectful to his employees in a demanding format. The manager and the owner wanted me to apologize to the staff for wrongdoing, but I believe I did not do anything wrong by telling the new employee that he did not know his job and I requested another employee to settle my account in a correct matter. The store manager was very upset with me and kept arguing with over minder issues. She wanted me to apologize to the staff, of which I refused. The owner was present and accused me about another incident, during inventory time when it was not posted on the internet of which the office employee had to make that necessary changes when may transaction was completed, when I wanted to make a $200.00 payment on my account. The owner accused me of walking around the store during inventory and had me on video, but when I asked to see the video, the owner said that he does not keep videos that long in the store. With that said, he decided to close my layaway account and wrote me a refund check in the amount of $1,500.00 and told me to never come back. After the check was written out in the amount of $1,500.00, the owner made a statement about a bad review. He stated that If I decide to go online to write a bad review against the store, that he had lawyers to dispute the facts. CONSUMER REVIEW FAIRNESS ACT (CRFA) Federal law protects my right to write an honest/negative reviews about a business without fear of financial penalties or intimidation. Businesses cannot legally fine me, charge me fees, or threaten to sue me just for leaving a negative review as long as my statements reflect my genuine, honest experience. Of which I did. Stopped by this shop during my last visit to Gettysburg. The store itself had a good mix of military items to choose from.

This may be the best Civil War Shop I have ever been to. The shop is like a museum with some of the most amazing Civil War relics, antiques and artifacts I have ever seen. Almost all are for sale but many are of such high quality and value that only the most serious collectors would be able to purchase them. They have a tremendous selection of civil war rifles, pistols, flags, artillery, swords, buckles and plates, documents, hats, coats, photos, etc. Every member of the staff was extremely personable, helpful and open to conversation. Although much of their inventory is expensive, most of the prices were reasonable. I picked up 3 awesome Artillery shells but look forward to going back for more pieces of American History and for the welcoming, helpful conversation. This place is the real deal if you are a true Civil War historian or preservationist--and even if you're not. They have an expansive collection of civil war artifacts and memorabilia whether you're looking for an inexpensive musket bullet or a rare artifact. If you are into original authentic quality civil war relics and antiques or desire to view such items, look no further, this is the place. It's not a cheap souvenir shop, the items here are real, authentic and ultra-pricey. In fact, you can skip most of the museums, as The Horse Soldier has more than they do and viewing them is free. When I say ultra-pricey, I really mean ultra-pricey. For example, the price of an authentic Confederate Officers I noted was set at $32,500 (see my photo) and that is for real, they mean it. Authentic Civil War items are prized and popular with collectors, and as far as those items go, The Horse Soldier not only seems to have the most of them but the very best of them. Asked a question to a woman sitting behind the front desk. Had never seen that employee there before. Response was curt and condescending. Nothing quite like a stereotype in the work place. Won't go back or buy there again. The expression the jawbone of an arse can kill a thousand sales applies here. As a longtime collector of Civil War era military swords, this is the best place to go. Prices do tend to be high because of the location, but with some patience deals can be found. And honestly, the prices from online dealers and eBay are comparable. The staff is helpful and courteous. I make it a point to stop here anytime I'm in the area or looking for a specific sword to fill a gap in my collection. They have their own parking lot, which helps being smack in the middle of the tourist district. read more

Why does every gun shop in the world seem to have that one cranky, crusty guy that makes you feel small just for asking a question? This otherwise wonderful place is no exception. This business has a LOT of artifacts - some are quite rare and expensive while others are more affordable. They have a wide selection of antique weaponry (their specialty evidently) as well as smaller artifacts, documents, and photos. It is all a bit overwhelming as so much of it is crammed into the space. Their prices were quite reasonable, in my opinion. Alas, I cannot say that for the customer service. Compared to The Union Drummer Boy store, their service is awful. We asked several different staff members to help us find a nice, reasonably priced artifact we could take a souvenir, preferably related to Indiana or North Carolina (our home states), but all they would say is "we don't have anything from there" and move on to the next person or one guy just flat out stopped talking to us without even anyone else to help. If you don't want assistance or only want very specific assistance for a specific item you have already seen in the store, their service is awful. But, they do have a wide variety reasonably priced...so it's worth a stop in. read more

Best selection of civil war artifacts in Gettysburg! As many have said before, it really is a museum with price tags. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. I spent well over 4 hour trying to decide on purchases and they answered any questions I had, gave me their personal advice, one of the employees even offered to research what regiments came from my county! I ended up walking out with 3 items I love. A much more pleasant experience than that of competitor stores in the area. Their prices were reasonable compared to other shops, and with such a large inventory, you can find deals if you spend enough time looking. If you're a serious collector, or a tourist interested in seeing real artifacts, this is the place to go. My husband and I visited here Jan 23,2015, we had made a special 3 hour trip just to visit The Horse Soldier. We had looked online,and found several interesting artifacts, two of which we wanted to purchase. We decided to drive down to Gettysburg. We also brought an antique firearm to possibly have appraised,and or, put on consignment. The Horse Soldier had a large selection of different antique firearms, swords, and other civil war memorabilia. We had a nice time looking at all the merchandise, and were interested in purchasing a few items, until we went into the middle room with a desk for the employees. There were workers going in and out of the one emergency exit. When we were walking into the middle room,one of the employees came out of that door. He was very angry,throwing keys on his desk, making loud noises. He was talking very loudly, almost yelling to another older employee saying profanities how he is sick of this place,ready to quit, and not come back! He was using very inapropriate profanities and racial slurs about his job and his coworkers! He was also complaining about a young college student working the front desk. We were in the same room where he was talking, and I left the room while my husband stayed in the room, trying to ignore the employees and trying to enjoy all the merchandise. I felt extremely uncomfortable because of his language, and tone of voice, I wanted to leave at that moment, but let my husband try to view the rest of the store. Not once did anyone of the employees ask us if we needed assistance or help with anything we were looking for. We felt so uncomfortable we never even talked to anyone about putting our firearm on consignment. There is no way that we were going to let a very disgruntled employee handle our documented revolver! We will never ever return to this store because of the way we felt in the store, and how the employees behaved in a most inappropriate and very unprofessional manner! I would never buy anything from The Horse Soldier, even if I really fell in love with an item. This was a major disappointment to say the least. I know that this was an off season visit. I would think, as a business owner, all the more reason to be attentive to the only customers in the store! Great items, terrible employees! This store is a cut above just about any other antique or souvenir store in Gettysburg - in fact, you could say it's like a museum where you can buy the exhibits. The quantity, quality and organization of the items is superb, and staff has always been friendly and helpful (I have visited at least five times over the last two years). If your passion is antique weaponry you will probably be tempted to take out a second mortgage (some of the rarer items run into the tens of thousands of dollars) but there's something authentic and historical here for every price point.
