These are old buildings and past boards failed to raise the fees for future expenses, but the maintenances fees are still less than what most people would pay for an apartment or a house. A "cooperative" by definition is " a business owned and run jointly by its members, with profits or benefits shared among them. - involving mutual assistance in working toward a common goal." Some stockholders are inactive and don't get involved in the process by attending meetings and having constructive ideas to solve problems. They want something for nothing. Most Co-Ops around the country make participation of members mandatory. our Co-op is different, but it is still necessary for the success of the Homes. Each year new Board members are elected by the Stockholders. Yes, in the Past, the meetings have been disruptive because people are passionate about things. The current board realizes people want to have their say, but they also try to maintain respect and will ask members to leave if they are rude and vulgar. We have a new manager, who is cleaning up past management mistakes and is doing an excellent job. We also have active members who work hard trying to create events to bring our community together. neighborhood clean-up, halloween party and chili cook offs, and they just had a christmas party for the area kids. As far a the crime goes, again it's wanting something for nothing (anonymous L. needs to get involved). We have a neighborhood watch and a community police officer who advices us each month. (if you attend the meetings) I lived in mid-town KC, MO for 5 years (Union Hill area 30th and McGee) I feel safer here in the Homes than I ever did there. if you leave something in your car that worth money... someone could break in. It happens all over the city. as far as the grounds being trashy, maybe Anonymous L. could get off their couch and pick up after themselves instead of leaving it up to someone else. We have stockholders who go around and try to pick up trash they see, it would be nice if others did the same. This is an Inner City community and with positive active members it will grow into a wonderful community. We need strong community leaders and people who want to be a part of a community. read more

A great place to save money, be a part of a community, but yet still feel like you have privacy. The Homes is a unique Co-Op housing association. people buy shares of stock in the corporation. voice their ideas in our monthly meetings. contribute to our community by volunteering in our committees, and voting in new Board members each year. Stockholders are encouraged to get involved. There is a monthly maintenance fee that covers the operation of the 345 units, and staff. If you are not ready for home ownership and the repairs that go along with that, then The Homes is the perfect place for you. read more
