As a kid, we would go on school field trips to The Heritage Society houses. As a eight to eleven year old, I was not terribly impressed. Old houses; standing in line in the heat; shuffling from house to house. I did learn a few things, mostly from the log cabin. Each house is set up to resemble a different point in history, so the log cabin had many pre-electircity ways of life. The one thing that has always stuck in my head was the wooden basin in which they made lye soap. Everything was so fascinating, although it makes me appreciate electricity all the more (thanks a bunch Ike!). As an adult, it's a whole other story. How amazing that all of these houses are from Houston, and what a story they lend to our history as a city. Amazing! Thankfully instead of razing these bits of history, the houses (and church) were moved to this wonderful, tranquil park. The one house on it's original site is the Kellum-Noble house (an old school house). The other eight were moved to the park over the past forty years. The Kellum-Noble house is actually the whole reason The Heritage Society came into existence. Three people in 1954 were able to successfully save the house, with the goal of preserving Houston's history. Over the years, houses around Houston have been relocated to the park. The most recent addition was The Forth Ward Cottage in 2002. There are guided tours: Tue-Sat 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, Sun 1pm and 2:30pm. There is now a cell phone tour. I have not tried this, but there are signs with instructions posted. You can tour at your leisure. Tour prices: $6 for adults, free for kids 18 and under. You can also just wander around outside of the houses, in the museum, and in Sam Houston Park for free.

A great taste of history sitting right downtown. It's a great place and I highly recommend a tour so you can go inside the buildings.

There are a dozen or so old houses that have been moved here when the original site was used for construction etc.

Phil Stewart guided my wife, brother, S-i-L, and me on a three hour tour of the Houston area, from…read moredowntown to the Galleria area. Phil's knowledge of the areas made the tour very interesting and informative. I've lived in suburban Houston for years and learned a lot about Houston on this tour. Phil Petersen

Phil gave us the ultimate VIP tour. My husband and I (from South Carolina) had only one day to…read morespend in Houston on Friday before our event on Saturday. I researched tour companies in advance of our trip, and I chose "Discover Houston Tours." Phil planned an itinerary and kept in touch with me before our arrival at HOU-Hobby. He communicated with me by phone, text, and email which assured me that I had selected the best tour guide. Our main purpose was to use our "free day" to tour Johnson Space Center. Phil picked us up at the airport and took us on the greatest tour of the Space Center. He guided us to every exhibit, so that no time was wasted. If I had been "on my own," I would never have known how grand the Space Center was. After the Space Center tour, Phil suggested that he had time for a tour of Houston. Phil's knowledge of Houston is unsurpassed. He took us to all the amazing places in Houston, including famous parks, River Oaks, historic sites, landmarks, and an opportunity to admire the skyline and the architectural beauty of buildings and skyscrapers. I am grateful for Phil Stewart's wonderful tour of Houston. Our visit to Houston was perfect!

Downtown, Fourth Ward

I absolutely loved this tour experience! I did the downtown tour for my birthday and I'm so happy I…read moredid. It was so much fun, we had a wide selection of foods, and the guide, Christine, was great. She was sweet, down to earth, and knowledgeable. It's definitely a good amount of food. I was so stuffed by the end I couldn't finish certain dishes. I really liked 6 out of 8 of the dishes which I think is a good proportion considering everything was a surprise. We went to 4 different restaurants. I think everyone's least favorite was the last dessert, but it was okay because we had so much yummy food before then. I highly recommend the tour! The walking was nice since we were eating so much. You also get a little history tour as you walk. It wasn't too much walking so I think it's suitable for older adults and kids (I heard some of the other locations are more walking so be sure to ask if you're concerned). It's a little pricier than some similar tours I found ($70/pp), but they were much more responsive and easier to plan with compared to other places.

She refunded our monies paid and made sure my sis in law was ok. Her dedication to her business and genuine concern for her patrons speaks volumes and I would recommend and return. Thanks Sharone for everything we really appreciate it!
