There is a rehabilitation side where the patients do not live here but are here for an extended stay. There is a large therapy gym with a pool on this side and each hallway has its own nurses station, nurses supply closet, own seating area with a tv (there are tv's in bedrooms too) and its own dining room. I really like the elegant touches. The other side of the building has long term patients. Each hallway is the same as the rehab side and there is a smaller rehab room. There is a lovely pond on this side of which I put my two pet turtles in when I moved away. Patients saw them as a sign of good luck and enjoy watching them. I hear they eat popcorn often being that on each side of the building there is a popcorn machine. (there are also ice cream machines. There is a chapel, rooms to reserve for private family birthdays/holidays, there are activities like bingo and cards, and overall this is a great place. I was once the person in charge of supplies. I know that we ordered the best quality of products and if we didn't have it I'd run out and buy it. Our Kitchen is high end and our house keeping department has a great room with washer/dryer, a large folding table and so on. You really just have to go and see it for yourself. Jack Vetter the founder visits often, his mother stayed at the sister facility Brookestone Village. The Administrator is a very knowledgeable and nice person. He had been a nurse for several years then was the director of nursing before the administrator so he's done the dirty work and knows what it takes to provide quality care. The Administrative assistant is a kind professional woman, she had her father stay for rehabilitation while I was working there. I could go on about the staff, HR is great, and so on. I'd stay here if I needed rehab.

To preface this; I own some group homes. It's a different demographic, but there's a lot of similar…read morewith care between what I do and what Parsons House does. I've also been in 'caring' professions for over 30 years. The first thing I noticed at Parsons House was how long people have worked there. The direct care staff turnover rate is low, and a lot of staff have worked there for a long time. THIS IS UNHEARD OF IN THIS FIELD. It's what I strive for in my own business, and it telling of a positive place to work, and greatly increases the quality of services due to the experience of the employees. My mom moved into Parsons House about a little over one year ago. The move was rocky. Her memory was pretty bad, and despite wanting to move, she kept forgetting. Parsons house was great with the move. They supported her, me and the rest of my family through this difficult time. Understandably, my mom did not want to lose her independence. While they do laundry for people there, they forwent their own protocols and allowed her to do her laundry, and as her abilities decline, they are helping her with this, but she's still doing it, herself. She wanted to continue to self administer her own medications. They completed an assessment for this and, again forwent their own protocols, she was administering her own meds, and they allowed me to use the pharmacy my company uses, which was great. As time went on, I (as medical POA) decided she couldn't self administer her medications. This transition has been difficult, not because of Parson's House, but because of the pharmacy they had been using. I'm not going to get into the logistics of this, but I'll just say the pharmacy messed up her billing and did not bill insurance, personally charging her. The pharmacy was not following through to fix the problem. This was not Parsons House's issue, but they wanted to help. I didn't think there was anything they could do, but one of the nurses called the pharmacy and...I have no idea how...got the pharmacy to start working on fixing the issue. They also mentioned they are looking at different options for pharmacies. I didn't ask them to do this, they just recognized an issue and were already processing a solution. Not only have they worked hard for the quality of services they provide for my mom, they have consistently gone well over what they were responsible for. At Parsons House they not only do what's needed, but what's right, which warms my heart.

In the 4 weeks that she was at CountryHouse we noticed a measureable decline in her emotional state and her physical abilities. Boredom was her worst enemy, and she developed several disconcerting behaviorisms during her short stay there. The move has made a world of difference for her. Only one week at Independence House and we are seeing dramatic improvements in her moods, and the behaviorisms are subsiding. Augmenting her daily routine with PT and OT, my sister is regaining her strength and is no longer restricted to her wheelchair (Yeah!). Kudos to the staff at Independence House, whom we find engaging and endearing to the residents placed in their care. If you are searching for a memory care facility for a family member, don't be fooled by the appealing "brick and mortar" options out there - just because a place 'looks' like home doesn't mean it 'feels' like home. Take the time to observe the staff and their interactions with the residents. Then ask yourself... would I want to live here? Thank you Independence House for making good on the promise touted on CountryHouse's website... creating "moments of joy" for my sister and for all the residents in your facility.
