It took a few tries to find a massage therapist at this practice that could provide the deep tissue…read morepressure I need, but I did eventually and have been happy with the services received since from that specific therapist. However one thing you should know if planning to come here, is that they regularly increase their rates - going from $110 to $118 to $125 per hour for massage services in less than the 18 months I've been coming here. Now keep in mind, I understand inflation, increased costs, etc... So its not the price increases I have as much issue with (although the frequency seems extreme especially given the fact my insurance coverage hasn't increased in that time)... My main issue is the fact that they increase their prices with ZERO communication being sent out. So one month the price is one thing and then you come in for another scheduled appointment and suddenly they start charging you a higher rate without a word of mention. It wasn't until after I tapped my card for payment that I noticed the increase. In what world is it not standard practice to inform customers - especially if they have services booked - that the prices are increasing? A simple email would solve this problem but instead they just assume all is well and leave it to the admins at the front desk who have to deal with explaining it after the fact? Lucky for this place I like my current massage therapist - because their ethical business administration practices are seriously lacking.

I saw Dr Paul Winston, Physiatrist, at Shelbourne Physiotherapy for a consultation about my nervous…read moresystem. I was interviewed by a medical student who discussed my history with Dr Winston. Dr Winston proceeded to inject my trigeminal nerve with a freezing agent without discussing it with me other than a cursory few comments. He had the syringe ready before he even saw me based on his student's interpretation of my history. This was not informed consent, which I didn't have. In 1980, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled, in the landmark case of Reibl v. Hughes, that patients should be told what the doctor intends to do, as well as what the significant material risks are, and anything else that a reasonable person in that patient's condition would want to be told. I suffered extreme pain and permanent damage to my nerve and temporal mandibular joint. Beware of Dr Winston and Shelbourne Physiotherapy for their association with a doctor who doesn't believe in informed consent. This was the worst medical trauma I've ever experienced.

Jennifer, the physio, is relaxed, knowledgeable, friendly, and really knows her stuff. Even when it is hopping in there, you get the sense that she is taking the time needed to treat your injury properly. Actually, the whole clinic is a nice combination of relaxed and professional. IMS is not for everyone, since it involves sticking acupuncture needles into sore muscles. But it works like a hot damn.

Dr Star's personalised and genuine care and expertise provided me with the long-term relief I had been long searching for. Dr. Star asked how the injury was caused, what treatment was recommended and then provided context about the injury, the time lapsed causing scaring and treatment plan. I thought he was rather optimistic. Not only did Dr. Star treat the pain effectively within the timeframe recommended, but also helped me to understand how to maintain lasting wellness. I can't recommend Dr. Star and Active Health & Wellness Clinic enough for anyone struggling with similar issues.

I've been to a few chiropractors in Victoria after having suffered several lower back injuries from…read moreoverexerting myself in badminton and I was pretty much convinced that they're all quacks. A crack here and there in a very expensive "chiropractic chair", all in less than 10 minutes and you're sent out the door to pay your customary amount. I've worked out that these chiropractors pretty much make a fine $30-$40 every 15 minutes or so, with the way they try to churn patients out the door like in a factory line. Until Dr. P. I had the misfortune of being in a car accident in late February 2010 with a somewhat debilitating neck injury and my GP suggested going to see a chiropractor in tandem with a physiotherapist. One of our friends suggested Victoria Exercise and Rehabilitation Centre, where Dr. P is housed. He completely proved me wrong and proceeded to be the most amiable, knowledgeable and effective chiropractor ever. The guy explained the injury, treatments available, billing and post-care stuff so well that you will feel like he pretty much anticipated and answered all your questions. He does a very thorough job from check up down to your last treatment which results in a very effective and continual healing process. The 3-4 months worth of treatments with Dr. P. gave me a solid foundation to build on and I'm pretty much back to full mobility now thanks to him and the physio staff there. My progression was very much in line with the expected time of recovery for my sort of injury (about 12 months) but I'd say I was feeling back at 100% by the 7 month. Bonus is, he's also very up-to-date and modern; you can find him on Facebook and Youtube I believe, in addition to the monthly or so newsletters he sends out to his patients. The key thing to remember is that chiropractors are not miracle workers. You actually have to do your part too. If you constantly go to your chiropractor, GP or whatever and whine about how your back kills you but you over eat and don't ever really work on your core or bother exercising, they can't cure you. The important thing is to respect your body's ability to heal but at the same time, push yourself too because a can-do mental attitude goes hand in hand with physical healing. I tried to convince Dr. P. to move to Port Moody but no dice right now, which means I have to trek back to the island for treatments.
