The Top House Inn - A quick drink before dinner!

Nevertheless the room was clean, bright and well appointed with everything we needed for our stay. And the water pressure in the shower was more than capable of knocking barnacles off of our day-weary wrecks of bodies! After taking a walk to Lizard Point we went back to the Inn for dinner, and we weren't disappointed. Both dishes were great, as was the sticky toffee pudding WE had for desert. I say WE, cus my wife pinched half of mine despite having her own ice cream! Getting ready to go down friend breakfast, will update this review shortly! Ok, so breakfast was fantastic. My wife had drop-scone pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, I had smoked Hake with two poached eggs, grilled tomato and mushrooms. I've never had Hake before so wasn't sure what to expect. I need ent have worried, it was beautiful, big flakes of smokey, flakey fish. The eggs were cooked to perfection as were the mushrooms and tomato. My wife's pancakes were light and fluffy and the bacon was just crispy - not over cooked! Would give the breakfast 10/10 and will definitely be on the lookout for Hake in the future!!

Good selection of food, a small but excellent Gin cocktail list ( the landlord advised me he's not a cocktail bar ) good cider and beer whatever your partial too. Also if you want to walk to the light house or walk the coastal path which starts 5 mins from this pub it's very convenient

No words were spoken until we asked if we could check into the hotel, not knowing if this was the proprietor or not. Apparently it was and we got a key and shown to the room, which seemed much smaller than the pictures on the web site, but these things happen. We had a room with a balcony overlooking a car park (and thereafter the ocean), but it was very small with a small double bed. The bathroom was OK but distinct signs of mildew on the tiles. Later we experienced a storm in the night and the ceiling leaked dripping water onto the bedside table - the owner said he would take care of this but not sure if this happened or not. Breakfast was good, especially when served by a cheerful young lady, although I believe this was her last week. One morning, when she was not there, we were greeted by the owner saying he was about the ring a bell upstairs because it was late (9:15) and breakfast is only served between 8:30 and 9:30 am. Several others appeared after us, so we presume this was directed at everyone - anyway, not very conducive to a relaxing start to the day. The hotel listed a restaurant but really this was just a breakfast room as there were notices each day saying the "restaurant" was closed. Also, there is no bar, and there is just some 1930's music playing every evening in a deserted lounge with wartime memorabilia scattered around. As a B&B this place worked OK, and others apparently had better experiences. It seems to trade a lot on the name of Doc Martin and the fact that some filming was done in the building or outside. There is a private car park but because we had a large rental car it was very difficult to park there, so we ended up paying 5 pounds a night at the public car park across the street, rather than pay for damage to a rental car. If we returned to this area, which is very beautiful and I have spent many years there in the past, we would stay somewhere else. In addition the hotel was way overpriced for what it was. On another note, we placed this review on trip advisor and we were scathingly libeled by the owner, as he did with other poor reviews. He, apparently, cannot take constructive criticism.

Fiona & Arnaud are the perfect hosts, and were a good source of information on things to do in the area. They went out of their way to have breakfast ready for us a little earlier one day as we had a flight that morning to the Isles of Scilly. Internet was a little spotty sometimes, but workable. And the breakfast! You can have a traditional English fry-up, but there are so many other options as well. We loved the pancakes with fresh fruit and the warm baguettes. It was a perfect fusion of English & continental cuisine. I'd return to Penzance just to stay at the Blue Seas.

The first thing we noticed was how elegant the building was, with stylish interior decoration and high ceilings proving a lot of light in the rooms. It is located a stone's throw away from the sea, which you can view from some bedrooms. We were offered rather nice coffee on our arrival along with freshly baked homemade scones, then relaxed in the front room where there was a computer if we needed (WiFi provided throughout the hotel). The couple who run it were fantastic; very friendly and helpful with any queries, and there was a printed guide in our room complete with local restaurant menus in it (we'd recommend the Navy Inn). They also happen to produce AMAZING breakfasts. And a great choice of coffee. They are also a certified Green Business, and food and toiletries are sourced locally. It made for a quality stay in the centre of Penzance; we'd recommend this hotel to anyone!
