The Donkey is a perfect pub to meet your mates, make some new ones, or have a quite time next to the working fireplaces. There's dart and poker nights for those that play, and live music one night a week. Located just off of Wood St, the Donkey makes a brilliant stop before or after dining at Swindon's best. Can't recommend the Roaring Donkey enough for those who like pubs, proper ales, and great company.

He said a donkey was tethered outside the pub always in the same place and when it was time for it to go home and be fed it would roar to make sure its owner knew. And when donkeys want to make a lot of noise they can and it is a bit like a roar. I have heard this. He said the pub is haunted as well and he has seen an old lady sat at the table by the window.

The Manageress could soften her look however (maybe smile occassionaly) and offer (all hands to the pumps) the staff some help during busy periods. A good range of lagers, beers and wines, but they do tend to be let down slightly on the real Ale management. They frequently forget to prepare the barrels for changeover - and so 1, or sometimes 2 of the 3 real Ales runs out for a few days at a time. Really good food though, nicely presented and promptly served at competitive prices. The regular live entertainment (singer) provided on a Friday evening is good - BUT - why do they stick them in a corner where hardly anyone can see them perform? It's an 'L' shape pub, so put him in the middle, not at one end by the doors to the toilet. The customer base is mainly couples or families from a wide range of ages. The pub also has an adjacent (seperate) sports bar too to keep the footy nuts happy - so can't understand the need for a large screen TV's showing sport in the lounge/dining area too??? There is generally a warm relaxed atmosphere, but sometimes it's slightly soured by letting some of the locals get a bit loud and carried away with their 'ripe' language. The pub does support and promote family dining, so let's not spoil it and keep the language in check. All in all, not a bad pub, the food and drink are VERY competatively priced and so worth going to if you live locally.
