And that's just the stuff I've bought over the past few months. They've got tons more stuff, most of which I don't even know what it is because I'm an unhandy city boy. Perhaps this is a small-town thing, but the staff here seems like they know...everything. They've got valuable advice if you want it, and I'm betting they can either come out and fix stuff, or know who you can hire to do so if you can't do it yourself. Some of the items can be a little pricey compared to a big box store or the internet, but you're also paying for expertise and convenience, and shopping local is always a good thing. Allen and Palmer has a variety of employees that are experts on in home problems and answering questions. They also have several guys on staff that are Master level plumbers. James Decker works on the plumbing crew there and seems to know his way around anything mechanical, plumbing, heating, etc.... There is undoubtedly a bit of mark up on items purchased here. This is because they have to ship things so far. And indeed it would cost you more than the difference to drive to somewhere more urban to purchase the same items. I would highly recommend this location for almost anything you might need in the Northville - Sacandaga Lake area.

Since I avoid big box stores when I can, I have only this simple comparison. Last year I needed pressure treated 2x4 sticks for firewood racks. They were maybe 25% less at a big box store but then I found out the cheaper ones are not rated for ground contact. Those that I later bought at Allerdice were. The difference was worth it to me. I'm not a fanatic about shopping locally. I do shop online, but when I can, I go local.
