This is a wonderful organization that improves the quality of the community, although sometimes chaotic. I was there to pass along food items to donate. Boy, did I pick the wrong day and time. A prickly bossy woman was attempting to direct traffic. In the process she was confrontational with some of the patrons. A man unloading a truck heard the commotion she was creating and attempted to intervene. His kindness is appreciated, except for the crabby woman. (I won't call her a Lady). I don't need that kind of hassle when I'm there to participate for the community good. It's not worth the effort no matter what the price is.

That's what happened when one food bank volunteer named Lester told me that the Edmonds Food Bank could not help. Lester represents the insular types in Edmonds who automatically makes snap judgements about people. Even though he works at a food bank, Lester thinks he's the gatekeeper who has the right to deny people their basic needs. He gaslit me with some lame excuse about not having any drivers for drop off delivery because it's outside their service area. I knew he was untruthful because the food bank is less than a ten minute drive from my location. It's people like Lester whose reinforce the snobbish behavior that belies the cruel indifference of people at the Edmonds Food Bank.

I was looking up things to do during Labor Day Weekend that wasn't Bumbershoot. The options were…read morefew, since they would be competing with Bumbershoot. I found the The Emerald City Wanderers Volkksport Club because they had a walk on Saturday (Sept 5), called "Celebrate American Labor - a working waterfront walk in the Duwamish Waterway area." It was a non-competitive 10k or 5k walk through West Seattle. My friend and I showed up late, but were able to get a list of instructions for the 5k. It was a nice day so we took in some sights since either of us ever go to West Seattle (and certainly don't go walking around in it). We did get lost a couple times and that was confusing (explaining that we wanted to continue walking and not quit and go home to the volunteers who were picking up their signs) and amusing (hiking up this rocky steep hill to get back on course) and kind of scary (we were at this underpass where there were cars parked with people sleeping/living in them). But the gist of the club is that the members find walks in various neighborhoods, write down instructions and then they have several organized group walks a year. You can also buy a patch ($8) when you complete a walk...which I did. I'm looking forward to getting a sash to hold all my "prizes" (the lady at the check in table kept telling us that we had to return to collect our prize, it was really cute). We would walk again, but probably wouldn't start as late as we did (we were 30mins late). As mentioned earlier, there were spots where it was more shady, perhaps if we were in a group it wouldn't be as scary. Also, I think a few of the instructions were off (a "left" instead of "right") and a bit unclear. We back-tracked a couple times and on the second time, decided to just keep following their signs (there were paper signs and ribbons along the way), sometimes there was no signage for a while other times there were three within eyesight. But the folks were pretty nice and it's something random, easy, fun to do when it's nice out. :)

It's right on the waterfront, on a pretty stretch of beach where you can see the ferries coming in and out. Formerly the South County Senior Center, then the Edmonds Senior Center, the buildings there were rebuilt into an environmentally-sound, multi-generational and multicultural center with all kinds of classes, programs, clinics, and events. My hubs and I went to the EWC last night to see wildlife photographer and author Paul Bannick speak about his new book on woodpeckers in North America. It was a fascinating talk and slideshow in their big room on the first floor! This is just one example of the great speakers and performers that the EWC hosts all the time. They have rooms with beautiful views of the water that you can rent. Last December, we went to a memorial there for a longtime family friend and it was a great place to honor her and her legacy. When I am retired, or when I can carve out more time in my schedule, I plan on taking advantage of the many classes offered at the EWC. For now, I'll keep going to their terrific events and enjoying the wonderful view.
