I have been a member of the Gym for few months now. it was my next option after my previous gym decided to relocate to Solihull. The positives: - Centrally located ( City centre) - Affordable ( for a student like myself) - more than enough machines - accessible 24hrs, meaning I can hit the gym when I can't sleep :) - always kept clean by staff - friendly staff The negatives: - not very suitable for body builders - could be too crowded sometimes (depending on the time of the day) - some of the popular machines are no more in very good form Overall, if you want somewhere cheap, quality and central, this is for you.but if you are a body builder, you might want to try somewhere more suitable. read more

I've tried and tried to get satisfaction from the management here, to no avail. Persistent issues include: - loud, terrible music that they WILL NOT turn down. I hope that we can file a class action suit against them for hearing loss because they really don't care about health and safety - rough sleepers in the hallway because they won't fix the front door - virtual classes often not doable because of screen being off, sound being off or volume being up to the max - stinking lift (the one that works, other is perpetually out of order) and accessible bathroom. It has become one of the worst gyms in Birmingham. I have some photos to share with you, so take a look and decide for yourself. And for the management, shame on you as you promised that these are not a big issue and it can be solved, but when?? It's been a year like this. Every month a new broken machine. Even the wall clock doesn't work. Hope someone higher management takes a look and fixes it. It's so bad they even run out of sign to put on the machine, using wet floor sign instead. read more

I used the Gym for about a month. It's a clean gym, open 24/7 and located in a very accessible spot in the City. The membership price is quiet cheap. This is where the good points about it end. On the low side, if you are looking for hard-core experienced fitness staff, you will not find them in the Gym. There are no seriously good personal trainers there. If you are into body building, the Gym is not for you. It may not be for you either if you are trying to improve a good shape further. I reckon it might be good enough for someone happy with where they are at and want to just stay fit, or someone who has seldom exercised and is trying to lose weight. The resistance of the machines against your muscles -if you are a gym rat- feels like toys. Trying to get the great workout feeling is going to be hard to get here. The range of supplements sold by them is quiet small, of low quality, and even as small as it is the staff don't know the basic info on what they are selling. I travel on the job quite a bit. I would use the Gym in other cities just to keep my muscles in the mood till I go back to Birmingham to my regular gym, but I don't think with the current choice of free weights and machines they have right now, it provides a serious quality bodybuilding workout. read more

I was working out on equipment today while a cleaner suddenly knoked on my arm with her hand. She thought I left a tissue on the floor and asked me to collect it. After I told her it was not mine she just went away without an appology. I hope this kind of behaviour can be stopped in the gym. When people are concentrating on equipements or weights they shouldn't be disturbed or phiscally touched unproperly by anyone. Because it is potentially dangerous to disturb someone while he or she is training the muscles and the gym will be responsible if people get hurt due to the cleaners' knckings. Please advice the staff in the gym not to 'touch' people randomly!!! read more

The Gym has just been closed for a week for refurbishment. Totally unimpressed with the so called 'refurb' which apparently included new lockers, more equipment and new flooring. Yes there is some new flooring, and a few more weights added, but certainly in the womens changing room there are no new lockers. Oh well, we'll just stay with the old broken ones then! The equipment doesn't seem to have been updated - not even fixed in some places! I tried to use a bike upstairs and the handle was all wobbly. Not very inspiring! I have been a member of this gym for some time now. Recently I have noticed things deteriorate to the point that I feel it necessary to leave a review. Up until 5 years ago I had been a fitness professional working at many different clubs and gyms for over 20 years so I know how a club should be run. The equipment at this gym is now is such a poor state of repair it quite apparent that even basic safety checks and maintenance schedules are not being carried out. The majority of the treadmills seem to be OK with a few making dubious noises when in use and a few that have been out of action with no sign of repair. The cross trainers are either set unevenly on the floor so your not working on a level or they make grinding and banging sounds to the point I have to get off and try and find another one that works properly. Out of the 3 bicep curl machines in the gym - 1 has had an out of order sign on it for about 2 weeks, 1 has such a loose cable that range of motion is severely restricted and the 3rd the seat stem is loose so if you try and sit on it it will 'drop' while your using the machine. This is just a sample - I could go on (don't get me started on the changing rooms). What may once have been a good gym to use in the city centre is now not. The only saving grace this gym has is the price but even with that being so low the facilities are making me think twice. read more

Okay, so it's cheap. Probably one of the cheapest gyms I've known for what you get. I wouldn't go as far to say 'value for money' as like the other reviewers say it's got a lot of faults. I don't use every piece of equipment on there. I'll be honest I mainly just use the cardio machines on my way home. So with that in mind here I what I've found. The entrance into what appears to be an abandoned part of BHS store (but isn't) can put you off at first. There is access up via stairs and two elevators, the door mechanism has some bizarre Futurama like hover tube designed to stop people sneaking in on your pass purely because they cannot fit inside it with you but I'm sure it can be done. The place has no personality, greys and blues do not look modern in this case just very out of date and a tiny bit draining. Compared to the vibrant reds, purples and the orange gym around the corner it could do with a face lift. The treadmills seem to suffer the most of faults, with them starting off and then just stopping like your punched that red emergency button. I went at what I'd think to be one of the peak times yesterday at about 5pm and I had no problem getting equipment either for which I was surprised. The view you get does sort of make up for it, the floor to ceiling windows does prevent the hobbit feeling I got in my last gym which had no windows at all and was fondly(?) nicknamed the bat cave. To get this type of gym in my area e.g 24 hour I'd be paying £30+ a month so I put up with its faults, if I was a fitness aficionado I probably wouldn't go here though. Suggestions to The Gym: - Fix your equipment The water fountain could be colder A new colour scheme? Add more of that electric blue or something. read more

Its a standard gym, I have been a member since it first opened and to begin with it was great. Positives --Central location and easy to get to --24/7, always available to use --Price is more than reasonable --Clean --A great number of cardio machines Negatives --Weight-lifting area very small --Limited free-weights --At times its crowded but thats understandable --Some of the central classes downstairs at peak time are loud and distracting --Not enough resistance machines --Machines constantly in a bad state, often broken --Many that arent broken are permanantly faulty but 'work' --50% (if not more) of the lockers in the changing room do not work, I often spend a lot of time just finding one secure enough to use --Male trainers/staff seem to only talk to/train attractive females. Maybe this is their pick up spot? But besides all these negatives, I still use this gym and its very unlikely I would change as the location I think is great, whether your passing through town from work/studies, or on a break from shopping. Some room for improvement but overall not a bad gym at all. read more

No frills - for people who just want to get their workout done. This suits me. Gyms are for working out...not pampering! Generally never had any issues with The Gym Group :) Slight negative, it is busy times. But I really don't think you can mark them down for that! A busy gym is a good gym, right? Of course its going to be more crowded at peak hours as it's in the City Centre, but there's always machines available and it's open 24 hours so there's always a way to work around that if you don't like the crowds! read more

I have been coming to The Gym for a few months now after my previous one closed. It's a great gym and very affordable ,what can you buy for 15.99 a month?Recently dropped to 12.99 as a promotion...The staff are very friendly and it's a pleasant experience. What surprised me was how much I enjoy the Les Mills virtual classes,after always having a" real life instructor",but I gave it a go and love them,my personal favourites are, body balance,pump, and CX Workout.,best part the flexibility they run 24/7.Would definitely recommend anyone a little dubious of the virtual experience.. just try it...and if you've done the classes before you'll slot right in. The equipment's fine and for me the weights area is ample,it's a budget priced gym but does offer that little bit more ,and central location . read more

I have been a member for around 30 month's, It has all the equipment anybody could ask for, It's always kept spotless by the staff who do the cleaning, that includes the changing room and shower's. I am in my mid 60's and the gym help's me keep very active, and I know if I want or need any help or advice I only have to ask. I would say I average 7 hours a week at the gym, and it been open 24/7 is also a great help as many times I came in the early morning when I could not sleep. One of the biggest thing's for me is NO Contract. Keep up the good work in keeping the gym at such a good standard. read more

I have been a member of this gym for some years. About 18 months ago, I would have given this gym 4-5 stars. but in the last 8-12 months the standard has completely fallen off a cliff. There are definitely benefits to this gym. but it no longer the pleasant experience it once was. Positives:- * Great prices * 24 hours access * Fairly wide variety of equipment - but this could be better * Generally friendly staff * Nice enough atmosphere Negatives:- * Used to be a very clean gym, now it's a dive - not as clean as it used to be * Far too many pieces of equipment are faulty, and remains that way (even the hand dryer and automatic tap in the men's changing room do not work correctly and have so for some time). You have machines flagging up failed battery messages, that are never attended to. Some of the jogging machines make an absolute racket due to poor/lack of maintenance. On other machines, the displays just cut out while you are working on them. The feet clips on the rowing machines have no grip anymore and end becoming loose. * They don't upgrade or improve any of their equipment * Very bad layout - for example they have one of the rowing machines right by a post, if you are tall enough you could end up banging into it. The adductor and abductor machine, which are generally used by women are in the centre of the gym, and probably would be better facing the wall * Weights area could be bigger So as I said, about 18 months ago I would have given this gym 4-5 stars. But now, I whole-heartedly DO NOT RECOMMEND The Gym. The good news is that there are other gyms that have 24 hours access, so I'm looking into that and looking to move on.
