After nearly four years of living at The Grove, my husband and I have reached the point where we can confidently say that we will never recommend this apartment complex. We initially chose to stay because the rent was affordable, the location was convenient, and we were trying to save for a house. We have tried to make the best of our time here, especially now that we are expecting our first child and have been working hard to clean, organize, and prepare our apartment so we can make the best of the remaining time on our lease. Unfortunately, the way residents are treated has made that increasingly difficult.
One of the biggest frustrations is the constant turnover in management. In the nearly four years we have lived here, we have watched multiple different managers come and go. At this point, it is difficult not to wonder how a property can have so much turnover and still struggle with the same basic management issues year after year. The property consistently feels disorganized and poorly managed, and it seems like every new manager comes in, makes changes, and eventually leaves without the underlying problems ever actually being resolved. It feels like no one can simply figure out how to consistently manage this place.
Another major frustration is the constant implementation of last-minute changes that seem to come with additional fees or restrictions. Rather than feeling like residents are being treated with respect, it often feels like every new policy is another way to get money out of the people who already live here.
The most recent situation was honestly the final straw for us. The maintenance staff conducts quarterly inspections, which I understand and have no issue with. However, during our most recent inspection, a maintenance employee entered our bedroom, turned on our lights, noticed that a lightbulb was out, and climbed onto our bed with dirty shoes to replace it. This is the bed my husband and I sleep in every night. If a lightbulb needs to be replaced, we are perfectly capable of doing that ourselves. There was absolutely no reason to climb onto our bed, especially with shoes on, to change a lightbulb. They also changed the temperature on our thermostat while they were inside our apartment, which was completely unnecessary.
Then there is the situation with our cats. We have had two cats living with us without any issues, and previous inspections have never resulted in concerns about them. During this most recent inspection, however, we were suddenly told that one of our cats did not have the proper documentation on file and that animal control would be contacted within 24 hours unless the cat was removed. This was especially upsetting because we are expecting our first child and are already dealing with enough preparation and stress. There was no reasonable attempt to simply communicate with us and allow us to provide the missing documentation before escalating the situation.
After almost four years here, it is incredibly frustrating to feel like we are being treated as though we have never been responsible residents.
Security has also been an ongoing concern. There has not been a consistent, reliable security presence, and the apartment gates only recently started functioning properly after years of living here. My husband's truck has been broken into multiple times during our time here. Those experiences alone have made us question how seriously resident safety is being taken.
We have stayed because the rent was cheap and the location worked for us--not because we have been happy with the way the property is managed. At this point, our lease ends next July, and we are counting down the days until we can move somewhere else. We have spent four years here, and unfortunately, we will not look back on our time at The Grove with much positivity.
If you are considering living here, read the reviews carefully and take them seriously. We saw the reviews when we moved in and ultimately decided that the cheaper rent and convenient location were worth the potential headaches. For us, they weren't. If you decide the price is worth dealing with the management and property issues, that's ultimately your decision--but after nearly four years, we are completely ready to move on. read more
