First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. My stilton and broccoli tart wasn't bad - nice flavour but nothing special. My boyfriend picked at his sandwich - goats cheese and chutney served in fairly ordinary white bread. Too much stodgy white bread and not enough filling. It was an average sandwich and again, not spectacular. His aunt had the soup of the day which was pea, courgette and mint and while she said she enjoyed it, she noted that it was exceptionally minty. Overall the food wasn't the worst thing I have ever eaten but I'm not entirely sure why it was quite so busy. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things or maybe it's just as good as it gets in this little spa town.

The town itself is lovely, and the perfect place to stroll around with stop-offs at country pubs and local cafes such as this one. They even have cable cars in the town! Its located on the main street (which constitutes most of the town) and from outside it looks modern and chic. Inside it feels family-run and quaint, with about 20 seats arranged around the counter. They sell beautiful home cooked cakes, as well as all varieties of coffee and teas. In the savory department (being as it is a deli) they sell a great selection of specialty cheeses and meats. These cheeses are in some cases locally made, including some gorgeous stilton. The main point for me has got to be the Peli Deli cake shake! This consists of a piece of their homemade double chocolate fudge cake blended with ice cream and ice. That's the sum of the ingredients, and its literally the best milk shake or similar drink you will ever taste. Worth going all the way to Matlock for.

I look foward to my delicious Saturday wholemeal date and walnut sconesn and their hot cross buns were absolutely delicious this weekend compared to the rubbish cheap supermarket produce and he has even offered to bake me a wholemeal veggie pizza for one of their pizza evenings in Crich. I could not wish to find a more customer friendly cafe or restaurant and am looking forward to trying some of their wheat free bread. Katharine has also said that I could request The Loaf at Crich to do a packed lunch for my husband and I for our yoga workshop to be held in Crich on Saturday 21st July 2012. As you enter Country Parlour you are greeted by rustic seating, which are probably church pews and a plethora of homemade cakes, which to most people will be impossible to resist. Having eaten the chocolate cake on numerous occasions I can heartily recommend it! All food at Country Parlour is fresh every day, like the fruit and vegetables, or cooked in the kitchen at the back. The smell of freshly baking soda rolls regularly pervades through the cafe. The menu is not static and is written on a chalk board above the counter. There are daily specials like homity pie, as well as staples like jacket potatoes, and warm and cold salads. Portions are very generous, so will not leave hungry! The food at Country Parlour is fantastic, tasting like only freshly made food can! The food is amply supplemented with fair trade hot drinks and smoothies. The staff are warm and friendly and you can eat your lunch looking over the fields of the Peak District. Country Parlour is a popular place, especially at lunch time with tourists and cyclists alike, so its probably best to avoid visiting at midday in the height of summer.

The quaint little town is absolutely lovely, and is well worth a visit from Manchester. If you do visit, make sure this park is on your list of places to visit. Its absolutely lovely, and has everything from nice green spaces for picnics and flower beds, a pitch and putt mini golf course, tennis courts, a skate park, a bowling green, a kids paddling pool and swimming area, a kids adventure playground, a Victorian band stand, a lake with boats, and a cafe, and an ice cream shop. Its even got a tiny little train that runs through the park, that kinds can sit on! So whether you want a quiet stroll, a picnic, a motor boat ride on the lake, a lovely cup of coffee or a whole day out with the family full of entertainment, then this is the place for you. This is categorically my favorite park. Five stars.
