We had such a great time here. With loads of beer and cider stalls as well as a few food stalls, it was destined to be a success.
When walking into the building it was almost like being in a trendy greenhouse from the 1970s.... and I mean that in the coolest way possible. There was a good layout with loads of floor space in the middle.
There were 18 stalls ranging from some of the most obscure Scottish brewers to some more widely distributed microbrewers such as Stewarts, Thistle Cider, and Brewdog. My favourites for the evening were Cromarty, Tryst and Alchemy.
Cromarty had a wonderful 3rd Anniversary brew at 11%. They seem to have retained a wonderful taste along with the higher abv, which many other breweries seem to struggle with.
Alchemy is distributed across Scotland, and I liked quite a few of their darker beers, especially a porter.
Tryst may have been the best surprise for me. They had a double chocolate porter that went down as smoothly and easily as chocolate milk... I never tired of the taste. They didn't have any bottles of it left for sale, but we ended up getting some bottles of the chocolate banana ale.
The whole festival was an incredible first effort, in spite of some notable microbrewers such as Orkney, Eden, Inveralmond and Cairngorms missing. The wide range was impressive. There were some good food choices, but could have been more. The biggest areas of improvement could be the addition of some high tables in the middle floor. It was rather difficult eating from the stalls with two hands when you're already holding a glass with nowhere to sit it. Also, some cheaper food options as well as some choices of baked goods or chocolates would have been a huge benefit. We ended up going for more food afterwards as there weren't loads of food stalls, and the ones that were there were quite pricey.
Hippo, please do this festival again! It was awesome! read more
