Booked to stay here with my boyfriend for a few nights, and the…read morereceptionist, Kevin, who was super friendly on the phone, demonstrated appalling behaviour on arrival, for no good reason. As we walked in, Kevin asked my boyfriend if he was "happy" and remarked on how miserable he seemed. He wasn't miserable at all, in fact he had been perfectly fine. I had a quite stressful journey over, which I explained to him in a friendly manner, and if anything, we just wanted to put our bags down and relax. We told him we were feeling fine, to which he pulled a face of disbelief and asked us where we are from. He then thought my boyfriend was ignoring him and got huffy about him answering a few seconds late, albeit in a normal, neutral tone. My boyfriend has ADD so a slight delay in response is normal behaviour on his part and he was not trying to be rude or confrontational in any way. Kevin repeatedly remarked on how miserable we, and particularly my boyfriend seemed, meanwhile getting visibly more and more agitated and angry about it, refusing to drop it, which of course didn't make us feel at ease. He was targeting my boyfriend in what I can only describe as a personal attack based on his own presumptions and projections about him, totally unprovoked by any logical means. At this point we were of course feeling rather uncomfortable, as we couldn't understand why this receptionist was so hostile and creating an issue out of nothing. We were not rude, or behaving in any way that would warrant Kevin's exaggerated reaction. I tried to make conversation to defuse the situation, but to no avail. My boyfriend and I exchanged a confused and irritated look, which Kevin saw. Kevin then exploded with anger, shoved my money in my boyfriend's hands and told us to get out immediately and that he didn't want miserable people in his hostel and that my boyfriend should "get a life". I was flabbergasted and asked if we could talk about this, which he refused. He just threw us out on the street, cancelled our booking, with no other place to stay in Brighton, and threateningly told us to stop looking at him and start walking down the street, "or else". You could see the anger in his face and body and I think he would have tried to punch my boyfriend had we not walked away. I have travelled the world and have never ever come across anything that comes close to such unprovoked, rude, unprofessional and seemingly psychotic behaviour from any hostel staff before. I am very shocked, appalled and disappointed by Kevin's behaviour and would not recommend anyone to stay at this hostel as long as he works there!

The owners, Karen and Glen, are very helpful and fun -- they obviously love to travel and with their dogs and adorable son create a really friendly environment. We even went out to dinner with them one night! Can't wait to go back for a kitesurf holiday.

The only reason I do not do exactly that is because I would get tempted out by each set of new people that turn up and would never get an early night. This place is set up to allow people the opportunity to stay in Brighton for next to nothing so they can spend money on enjoying themselves and meeting people. check out is at 10a.m. so enjoying yourself too much could lead to you struggling to meet this deadline so you should always stay for longer than one night. There are rooms available at a higher price but if you value your privacy and want cheaper prices than hotels then this would be a good solution. Brighton has the most pubs and clubs per square foot in the whole of england so book a place here and see how many of these you can see before you go. As this place is new all the beds etc. are all in good condition so it is by no means a squat like some foreign places.

However upon my first nights sleep I found myself transported to El Azizia, Libya, circa 1922- for this was where the hottest temperature on Earth ever was recorded, a balmy 58 Degrees Celcius, and that, friends, is an understatement of just how bleeding warm this hostel's rooms are. Perhaps the above is an elongated exaggeration, but for Britain in June (average temp 16 C) I don't expect to be so hot it is seriously difficult to sleep. Further to this, staff are rude, inattentive and lazy. Breakfast is poor, and the showers dirty. The experience was highly un-enjoyable and made me almost (*almost*) wish I'd not come at all. Be warned, children. STAY AWAY.

They spend the bare minimum on their property they are earning a fortune from and paying their staff abysmally. Young children and vulnerable people live in this accommodation. There are currently loose slates on the pitched roofs which if they fell could seriously injure if not kill someone. The work to improve the building was obviously cyclically abandoned once the council thought the work was underway. There is rubbish everywhere surrounding the back of the building.

Journey's is the other and is pretty much the same price but the lounge area is a bit more lively in my opinion. £100 for a week in shared dormitories is very good and a great way to stay in Brighton as it means you will probably hear about better places to go from others you are sharing with and more people to have pre-drinks with which, is always the best part of any night.

The church and congregation at St Patrick's are well known for their generosity in these parts. Regular soup runs and dinners on site are well supported. The Church has has recent refurbishment to help it in its charitable causes. More strength to their elbows.

Be weary if you have a room booked on the first floor as you will be able to hear and feel the vibrations of the music coming from the bar downstairs which is part of the hostel. You should also be aware that when you call up to book you're credit card will be charged to a sports bar which may set alarms ringing when viewing your statement as it will be labeled as a bar in the details. The rooms are filled with standard bunks which may or maynot have a cage underneath so remember to take a padlock with you. There is limited wifi downstairs in the bar. Breakfast was cereal, toast and tea which was included in the price. If you are in a group of two or more I'd suggest finding a little b&b for a cheaper rate than taking beds here.

For example, from Sunday to Thursday all you need pay is £12.50 per night for a shared room and no more than £17.50 for a seafront room with en-suite facilities. Obviously peak time prices are slightly higher but as they never break the £40 threshold I think you'd be hard pushed to find somewhere that offers such good value. Some of the rooms have sea views and as the place has such a central location it's going to satisfy most customers. Don't expect five-star living but considering the extremely reasonable cost, you get more than you pay for.

Accommodation in the area is at a real premium for this weekend each year as thousands flock to the city for the marathon and 10k. We were pleasantly surprised to find the youth hostel had a 6 bed dorm with a bathroom for £199 for this weekend. The building is beautiful and they've done it up in a modern way but keeping the stunning original features. It's quite cool and funky in the communal areas and the room we had was decorated really beautifully. It had cream walls with a wallpapered feature wall with birds and flowers. It was pretty and calming. The bunk beds were very comfortable and the duvets were warm and cosy but light - just perfect. I could have done with another pillow (there was only one per bed) but this is the only criticism I have. What I was most impressed about was that each bed had a small light, plug socket and a shelf under the socket for your phone. Absolutely genius! I get so frustrated at hotels where there isn't a plug anywhere near the bed but this hostel had at least one for every bed, even the top bunks. The bathroom was nicely done and clean and the shower was hot. The staff were friendly and helpful and there is a self catering kitchen which is handy and well equipped. I'd highly recommend this hostel to anyone wanting to stay in Brighton. It's central, reasonable and a really comfortable place.
