The Grape Tray is the best wine shop in the Central Valley. And that's not up for debate. If you care about quality wines and are serious about securing some pretty hard to find collectible wines, just as much as getting some fantastic daily drinkers, then look no further. Stan the owner and James one of the wine stewards there actually care about what you are looking for, not what will make some god forbidden metric. If you go in looking for a certain kind of wine, you can trust the Grape Tray to get you there, or closer than anywhere else will. Having been in their position a few times, the liberty of not having a pushy salesman is very refreshing and reassuring. You can be honest about your budget, and about your taste and be certain they'll find what you're looking for. I've secured some nicer wines from them, and thankfully they got some great connections so upon asking, you'll more than likely succeed. An example would be Beaucastel- I randomly asked Stan about them one day (well before it made a top 100 list) and he simply asked "what color and year?" I replied both white and red, and whatever the current year is. Three days later I got a call from Stan. The wines were there. Oh and good luck finding that anywhere in the valley, at an actual realistic price. I had tried for two years prior getting it from a larger booze shop in town. No luck there. Looking for affordable tasty wines? They got plenty of those. I'm an avid Riesling fan and I'll say that the Grape Tray for about the past 3 years that I've shopped there has always had the best selection in Fresno and the greater Central Valley. Many of them in between $10-20 and these are from very famous producers. Same goes for other imports and domestic wines. Many times I've sent people over there because they just got the wines people want AND will want in the future. Can I go on and on? Of course I can. Will I? Well you can't drink wine and read this simultaneously! Believe me, there are far and few people I trust buying wine from. Either they don't source good quality, sell bulky crap, store it inappropriately or have clueless "wine associates". I know I can walk into the Grape Tray any given day and leave confident that the wine I'm taking home was well taken care of, passed the Grape Tray vetting process and discussed with knowledgeable aficionados. The Grape Tray's my shop of choice if I'm out shopping for myself! Pay them a visit! They'll love to get to know you- oh and one other thing: after that they'll greet you by name. BY NAME. That's very important. They're not selling wine to another number. They're selling wine to you, a person with a name. And they'll remember you. read more

Phenomenal location wine shop! I perused their selection on their website first, which is full of nice blog posts highlighting various wines. I love that they have a wide price range, from great deals on high quality wines to rare varietals. Honestly what drew me initially was the fact that they had an Elyse Merlot 2015, and at a discount too! Their shop is nicely laid out and very well curated. First time here and I was looking for a nice Zinfandel for the lamb dish I was serving on Easter. The owner gave me a tour of the shop and highlighted the different varietal locations. I'm a wine guy, and this place has got all my favorite vintners. The selection is wide ranging considering the store is on the diminutive side. But most importantly, I was able to find exactly what I needed, and more! As such, I picked up some nice bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with some stellar bottles of Chardonnay. This is my new favorite sandwich place! The BF got a groupon and I've been hooked ever since. I'm usually weary of places that serve sandwiches on sliced bread (I know, I'm weird), just because I feel like I can totally make it myself and the bread usually is not that great. (I know I can make sub sandwiches myself, but for some reason it taste so much better if I go and buy it at, oh say, Sam's deli). First time I got the turkey on (i think) white rye with sprouts. I think it's white rye. Man I think that was THE SOFTEST bread I ever had. It was crazy soft. And it had a lot of fennel seeds in the bread, but it wasn't overpowering at all. It was DELISH! And the workers there are super nice! Second time i got the turkey and roast beef on the molasses bread. I'll be honest the first time I heard molasses bread I was kind of turned off, but it's actually really good! It has a hint of sweetness to it. And yes, it's CRAZY SOFT! They get their bread fresh daily from Max's. The prices are fair as well. It's about $6 for a sandwich. The quality is top notch so it's a great price. I will say the whole set up of the place is sort of odd. You have to walk around a giant all of wine to the deli, which is sort of in the back of the place. They also have crap tons of wine. So if you're a wine lover, def. come here, too. But I am definitely a fan! read more

Yum, I ate here today after a few too many years of forgetting about this place! I bought a coupon book supporting our local food bank and noticed a coupon for The Grape Tray and remembered I used to eat here alot with my mom a few years ago. But I guess I just forgot about it after a few years. The shopping center it's located in is really bare and doesn't have a lot of businesses in it besides this location, paul mitchell and a baseball store so I guess I would drive by it not thinking much. I'll definitely be returning. I got #16, the California Sandwich (I think it was called) Cucumbers, sprouts, cream cheese, cashews and tomatoes on honey wheat bread. It was SO good! The Grape Tray makes some good sandwiches. There's white sub bread, as well as some loaf sliced breads. The bread is fresh and soft. The ingredients taste fresh, the sprouts, tomato, wax peppers, etc. One thing that helps before ordering is a sign on the counter that gives the toppings available. The Alfalfa sprouts come by default, but lettuce can be asked for instead. The first time I went there, I thought that I would probably like the lettuce better than the sprouts. I like the sprouts better now. The deli section of the store is in the back of the store. The prices for most of the sandwiches are around $6.50 each. This place never fails to disappoint! #3 turkey sandwich is the best....along with every other sandwich on the menu. The bad: only open until 5:30pm The good: tons of delicious bread choices, fresh meat choices, toppings, choice choices etc! I got the pepper jack - #7 - and the resulting wrapped sandwich was as big as my head! Definitely get the mayo - i skipped it and it was a smidge dry. All in all a solid sandwich. There is an adorable wine tasting area - which does not allow kiddos into - woot! But closing at 5:30 - it seems a bit weird... It was tasty, and i love all the different choices, and the prices were pretty good, but I'd have to try it again to give it better than a-ok, but oh yeah... they aren't open past 5:30 - sooooo..... i probably wont get another chance in a really long time. read more

I have been buying wine from Stan at the Grape Tray for 17 years now and he always has great recommendations and a superior selection of wines that are well priced across the spectrum. The new location, which sadly no longer makes sandwiches, is much smaller and more intimate. Seems like the selection has increased with everything from cult Cabs to very inexpensive summer quaffers. Right now he has Hardy's 2012 Chardonnay for $2.00. And it's fantastic! Yes, Two Dollars. This is truly one of Fresno's gems and one of the best wine shops anywhere. I literally have been coming here my entire life. When I was a little girl, my mom used to come in for a sandwich and the lady would make me a little half sandwich with a pickle as a treat. It doesn't really get much better than that. The sandwiches and sides are solid. There are also a ton of wines sold here so you can find something great to bring to a dinner party or to get pretty blitzed off of alone. The real treat here is dining in the upstairs loft. The staff is rude, specifically Elyse and Cary. I have been going to Grape Tray for 35 years. The attitude of the present staff is if you don't visit on the two days a week they work, you are not a "regular" customer. They informed me I am not a loyal customer, stating I will not get the VIP special and I was served dry marble rye bread. Elyse was not the usual person that makes my sandwich, and her attitude didn't value me as a customer thus no VIP $1 tip, I typically provide. I have contacted the Manager, hopefully he will provide additional training on proper, respectful service. read more
