You would think that a state so deeply rooted in farming and community would have more people coming together to support healthy local food from local growers. It's simple, you pay a subscription fee of a few hundred dollars in the spring in exchange for weekly summer produce harvested fresh all summer long. For those interested there are a few CSA options in the area however Common Ground Garden is the best. Run by the Sisters and students at St. Benedict Monastery/University they not only grow amazing fruits, flowers, vegetables and herbs but they also partner with others to offer local bread, eggs, and meats. The quality and quantity of each week's share cannot be beat, the staff is heavenly, and they even offer periodic events and classes for members. If you are willing to learn to cook and eat locally and seasonally there is no better value than Common Ground Garden.

Both are a very good value for what you get - it's a little hard to compare since you pay one price for a variety of cuts but I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation and it ends up being about the same price as non-grass fed supermarket beef for the ground beef, and actually cheaper for the prime cuts. Most importantly, the quality is outstanding. I've been wanting to make homemade broth/bouillon and before buying from GFCC, I bought some soup bones from Whole Foods. It took four hours and a lot of extras to get some taste and color. After buying a similar package from these guys, I was surprised to get much richer taste and color after just two hours, and the flavor was sublime, just like what I remember my mom making in the "old country"! The only downside is that you have to either share with another family, or else you need a big freezer (and that's for 1/8th which is the smallest package they sell). They did however tells us that they are working on splitting up the quantity into smaller packages so that should be available soon.

This time I was invited by a friend who told me they were having a holiday night market on 12/11 from 4pm-9pm. I was immediately yes! I arrived and immediately fell in love with the cozy Christmas and winter set up. It was like walking into a mini Christmas village. There were plenty of local vendors selling everything from art crafts, to bread and food sample kits. Santa Claus along with his pet was there ready for photo ops. This is an annual event at Tangletown Gardens, but I definitely recommend it next year if there have the holiday market. Good holiday gifts to get for loved ones.

It takes awhile to learn to utilize the various items in the shares, but I've found that it gets easier with each additional year to adapt to the timing of various vegetables. Unlike the local farmer's markets I find the produce to always be fresh. Nancy, the owner, does a nice job of communicating the various ups and downs of farm life. Sure, there are occasional disappointments (for example, when a crop gets destroyed by insects and/or weather conditions), but that just makes me appreciate the overall wonderful quality all that much more!

The farm itself feels like it was lifted out a storybook and we love to visit for the events they host for members (pea picking, pumpkins in the falls, bon-fires, etc). They are certified organic and they are not stopping there as they are always busy making improvements to make the farm and their distribution even more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Our family (2 adults and 2 kids) enjoy a "full share" which means we pick up a fresh box full of veggies for 18 weeks during the summer/fall months and if you do the math it's very inexpensive. The quality of the vegetables is always 5 star and super fresh. Most of the items are staple items that we can use easily incorporate into our weekly meals and once and a while there is a more unusual ingredient that is fun to experiment with... don't worry about meal ideas as Lisa provides weekly recipes and info about how to cook/eat each item. I can't recommend membership enough... one tip is to make sure to sign up early as each year the number of shares are limited and usually sell out.

If you like to buy organic produce at the store or enjoy visiting a famers' market or co-op, you should try this out for a season. There really is no comparison to the quality and variety of the produce, and there is a tremendous amount of a feel good factor when you commit to sustainably support a local farmer. If you're already on board the CSA train and just deciding which one to join, this one is wonderful. The owner is very focused, driven, and excellent at communication. She sends out deatiled updates on the farm as well as storage tips and great recipes for the week's delivery. She holds several fantastic events on the farm each year and really makes you feel involved and appreciated in her efforts to better our earth, health, community, and food system. She treats you like a true partner in both, business and this mission which is both humbling and empowering. That beats a mundane trip to the grocery store any day.

They had a lovely selection of annuals and perennials, hanging baskets, potted plants and individual flowers...they even gave away a small plant in honor of Mother's Day! We purchased a bunch of geraniums, decorative leave plants and a succulent pot...that blew me away. Will definitely be back to buy more flowers for the house!
