It's a little tricky to get to, narrow country roads, etc, but we'll worth it. If you wanting to eat I would advise booking and this place gets busy from the second it opens. The staff and proprietor Simon were so lovely and knowledgeable I ended up staying at the pub an extra two hours to participate in the weekly Sunday Night Quiz. Tip to anyone visiting The Greyfriar on a Sunday evening--you DEFINITELY want to stay for the Quiz! It's indescribably fun, and remains one of the top highlights of my time there. When I returned to The Greyfriar in March, I was welcomed like a local--Simon, Norma, and the staff I had met during my time in Chawton several months earlier all individually took the time to give me a hug and sit down over a glass of wine/pint of beer and and catch up on my life. Seeing that I was nursing a head cold, Simon took the time to personally make me a restorative hot toddy. But, then again, that's the magic of The Greyfriar. Because of the people who own and staff it (including chef Dan Rees, who cooked me a six-course meal for my birthday during my visit that was worthy of a ten-page spread in Food & Wine Magazine), the Greyfriar is more than a pub. It's a beacon of joy, feeding the soul and spirit as completely and as delightfully as it does the body. I can't wait to return to my "home" away from home again.

The staff were knowledgeable about the beers, described them well and gave us generous samples to try before we bought. The food was excellent. While we *only* chose from the burger options, they were excellent. The meat burger was well done and the accompanying salad items were fresh and both parts were not at all tired. The vegetarian rack equivalent was top quality and had variety, as if the staff had done their homework and knew what a vegetarian really wants. We had onion rings on the side. We would go back for them alone, even if nothing else had been up to standard. And did I mention the sticky toffee pudding? Served with generous sauce and quality ice cream, it was excellent. We tried 3 different beers during our meal. All good. We paid just shy of £40 two mains, one side, one pud, two pints, one half and a bottle of ale. It was super unprofessional and saddening to the point he told us we were not welcome back in to his pub!!! Shocking as no one had done anything at all!!some of my dads friends are in their 70s ! A good selection of real ale, sets off the old beams and friendly land lady. Moving with pint in had to the large garden overlooking the south downs way (see photos) we soon had steaming masses of food arriving. My lamb with apricots and apples was sumptuous. The liver and bacon my sister had was adequate, but the fish pie was a real winner, salmon, prawns, white fish in a creamy mash. Mmmmm. By the piles of benches stacked against a barn it looks like it gets very busy in the summertime - and according to some locals it "isn't as good as it was before it was discovered" but all in all a great lunch and think it is a great find. There is a separate function room at the back where live music events (bands and a regular jam night every Sunday) are held. This gives the bands enough space and keeps them out of the way of the main pub for those who want to drink or eat without music . The Swan gets some great bands and people come from far and wide for these. There is a car park round the back.
