Tip: You can't read any articles on the Globe and Mail's online site until you subscribe to get digital access. Back in April 2023, my employer, and the Globe and Mail had a webcast event discussing 5G transformation in the world. The Globe and Mail hosted this event. I attended to learn about what folks from my employer were saying about the risks and opportunities with 5G. Since this event, the Globe and Mail has put me on its event mailing list. I also got a bunch of messages in my inbox to subscribe digitally to its online content. It's funny that my employer has automatically put these event messages from the Globe and Mail directly in my spam folder... haha! I do get that some newspapers, like the Toronto Star, allow you to view several articles online for free. It'll then block access and ask that you subscribe. After all, the newspaper does need to generate revenue. With the Globe and Mail, if you access the site for the first time, it'll automatically prevent you from reading any article and will ask you to subscribe. I don't agree with this business model. What if I only want to read a single article. Why force me to do a minimum four-week digital subscription? What if I subscribe, read an article, and dislike it? I'm now paying for poor content. To cancel, you have to contact customer support. You can't do it online. You must call customer support. I don't mind talking to a human. However, your subscription is digital. It would make sense that if you can subscribe online, you can also cancel online. Instead, you are inconveniencing customers by being inflexible and archaic. Out of the big three newspapers that you can get in the greater Toronto area, the Globe and Mail has always been the least favourite for me. It's likely because it's heavily business-oriented, which has never interested me. Same goes with its financial Report on Business section. Cancelled my subscription over a month ago. It stopped on Feb 18/25. I was to receive a refund for the balance i paid upfront at the same time. After multiple calls and emails i have yet to receive my money. They gave me a BS line that it was a system glitch . I will never get another subscription to the G&M. I felt harassed by the agent who tried to force me not only to answer a ton of questions but to buy a different type of subscription instead of cancelling. Signed up for a trial period for $4 / month. After that it went to $36 / month - which is insane. Called to cancel and the representative offered me a full year at $119, when I said no, he lowered it to $99, when I said no again he lowered it to $72. I declined as I don't use the service, but what kind of bargaining is this? Is this not a reputable well known news source? Doing business like they are selling a time share in Mexico. In addition, they do not provide refunds if you forget to cancel. Any other reputable business - such as Microsoft - will refund you for the unused portion. Decent news source but a bit of a scam when you go to cancel. You can not cancel on your own. They make you call a 1800 number during business hours to cancel. I wanted to cancel my subscription so I called in after work and they were closed. I called next day and rep said they could not credit me my monthly fee even after I explained the situation. I was on a promotion for $8.99 for a digital subscription. All of a sudden, I get a charge of $36.11...apparently my promotion ended and their policy is to NOT notify you of the change and auto renew at a significantly higher rate. When I call to cancel, 3 days into this new month, they said I have to pay for the full month...that they could not pro-rate it and that is their policy. I just called the line to cancel my subscription, was put on hold for 13 minutes and was then told i would be put on the line with an agent who would help me with canceling my subscription. I was then hung up on. This is extremely unacceptable.. i'm now waiting on hold again to speak with a service representative once again. The Globe & Mail have decided to "allow" a certain number of online views and then you have to either subscribe or be cut off. Personally, I don't think they are doing themselves any favours. They were never my premium choice of a go-to online newspaper site anyway. I am not a business expert but believe that it was a poor choice. This is the most niche newspaper in Toronto owing mainly to it being a national publication. It likely has the best business section of any in the city but after that it starts to thin out. There isn't much of a local section and the sports section is barely noticeable. read more

Simply the worst customer service I have experienced in a long time. Very easy to sign up. Extremely difficult to cancel their services. They do NOT provide an id number to track my cancellation and kept charging my credit card. After the third attempt at cancelling, I called my credit card company to dispute the charge. read more
