Tip: You can't read any articles on the Globe and Mail's online site until you subscribe to get digital access. Back in April 2023, my employer, and the Globe and Mail had a webcast event discussing 5G transformation in the world. The Globe and Mail hosted this event. I attended to learn about what folks from my employer were saying about the risks and opportunities with 5G. Since this event, the Globe and Mail has put me on its event mailing list. I also got a bunch of messages in my inbox to subscribe digitally to its online content. It's funny that my employer has automatically put these event messages from the Globe and Mail directly in my spam folder... haha! I do get that some newspapers, like the Toronto Star, allow you to view several articles online for free. It'll then block access and ask that you subscribe. After all, the newspaper does need to generate revenue. With the Globe and Mail, if you access the site for the first time, it'll automatically prevent you from reading any article and will ask you to subscribe. I don't agree with this business model. What if I only want to read a single article. Why force me to do a minimum four-week digital subscription? What if I subscribe, read an article, and dislike it? I'm now paying for poor content. To cancel, you have to contact customer support. You can't do it online. You must call customer support. I don't mind talking to a human. However, your subscription is digital. It would make sense that if you can subscribe online, you can also cancel online. Instead, you are inconveniencing customers by being inflexible and archaic. Out of the big three newspapers that you can get in the greater Toronto area, the Globe and Mail has always been the least favourite for me. It's likely because it's heavily business-oriented, which has never interested me. Same goes with its financial Report on Business section. I'd rather not read any article from this newspaper if it's going to constantly tell me to subscribe and cough up payment without reading a single article in full. (86) read more

The Globe and Mail - My first time accessing an article to read online. I am asked to subscribe. I don't even get to preview a sentence. - Print Media Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

Cancelled my subscription over a month ago. It stopped on Feb 18/25. I was to receive a refund for the balance i paid upfront at the same time. After multiple calls and emails i have yet to receive my money. They gave me a BS line that it was a system glitch . I will never get another subscription to the G&M. Their customer service non existent !!!! read more

The Globe and Mail forces us to call them if we want to cancel the subscription, so I did. I felt harassed by the agent who tried to force me not only to answer a ton of questions but to buy a different type of subscription instead of cancelling. This agent was relentless and wouldn't cancel until I raised my voice. This type of behavior makes me reconsider the validity of the articles that the Globe and Mail publishes. read more

Signed up for a trial period for $4 / month. After that it went to $36 / month - which is insane. Called to cancel and the representative offered me a full year at $119, when I said no, he lowered it to $99, when I said no again he lowered it to $72. I declined as I don't use the service, but what kind of bargaining is this? Is this not a reputable well known news source? Doing business like they are selling a time share in Mexico. In addition, they do not provide refunds if you forget to cancel. Any other reputable business - such as Microsoft - will refund you for the unused portion. Globe and Mail is ridiculous and a bit of a scam. Content is hit and miss, but business dealings - terrible. read more

The globe and mail was supposed to charge $2.99 a month. Instead it stole $36.75. They refused to refund the money they stole. Re: Account# 0001380043 We received your request for a refund on your Globe Digital subscription. According to your phone call with us in 2022, we advised that the promotional rate of $2.99 would be applicable for 52 weeks and become effective on the next billing cycle. As such, we are unable to provide a refund for this service. If you have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to reply to this email. Paid for the subscription for years and half the time it wouldn't let me view globe and mail articles anyway. Not worth it, will not subscribe. read more

Decent news source but a bit of a scam when you go to cancel. You can not cancel on your own. They make you call a 1800 number during business hours to cancel. I wanted to cancel my subscription so I called in after work and they were closed. I called next day and rep said they could not credit me my monthly fee even after I explained the situation. I was told that it mentioned this in the 100 page disclaimer that I failed to go thru with a fine toothed comb read more

I was on a promotion for $8.99 for a digital subscription. All of a sudden, I get a charge of $36.11...apparently my promotion ended and their policy is to NOT notify you of the change and auto renew at a significantly higher rate. When I call to cancel, 3 days into this new month, they said I have to pay for the full month...that they could not pro-rate it and that is their policy. If this is the lack of integrity and ethics that goes into the content of their reporting which I'm assuming is the case, then I will no longer support this organization. read more

One of the worst companies to deal with. Their customer service reps seriously need training on how be be polite and deal positively with customers. Avoid them at any cost. read more

I just called the line to cancel my subscription, was put on hold for 13 minutes and was then told i would be put on the line with an agent who would help me with canceling my subscription. I was then hung up on. This is extremely unacceptable.. i'm now waiting on hold again to speak with a service representative once again. The customer service is terrible, and is appalling how they decide to deal with current customer that they "care so much about". It is disgusting how rude and unprofessional a business can be, it truly is no wonder that they are a dying business. SUPER EASY TO SIGN UP EXTREMLEY HARD TO CANCEL WHEN NEEDED!! DO NOT provide credit for this subscription read more

The Globe & Mail have decided to "allow" a certain number of online views and then you have to either subscribe or be cut off. Personally, I don't think they are doing themselves any favours. They were never my premium choice of a go-to online newspaper site anyway. I am not a business expert but believe that it was a poor choice. Shall see how they emerge from this recent choice. read more

Customer service allowed me to permanently unsubscribe and still receive the paper til the last day I paid for... none of this you have to remember to call back to cancel on the last day or we bill you for the next cycle stuff. Although calling back on the last day was the first thing they asked me to do, but I persisted. BTW, No problems on delivery, just wasn't reading it. read more

This is the most niche newspaper in Toronto owing mainly to it being a national publication. It likely has the best business section of any in the city but after that it starts to thin out. There isn't much of a local section and the sports section is barely noticeable. read more

I was put on hold for almost 20 minutes, I was then transferred to an agent. All I was trying to do was cancel my subscription, as I only need it for a school project, super easy to sign up, hard to cancel. I am very disappointed, this is very unacceptable, I do not recommend to anyone. read more

Simply the worst customer service I have experienced in a long time. Very easy to sign up. Extremely difficult to cancel their services. They do NOT provide an id number to track my cancellation and kept charging my credit card. After the third attempt at cancelling, I called my credit card company to dispute the charge. read more

Used to like G&m but no more, have gone downhill chasing profit instead of reporting, especially with the online version! You would see a sensational headline only to find out its garbage, they would do anything to generate more clicks so they can fool their advertisers for lot more money! On some page the reporter's head shot is bigger than the content, pathetic. read more
