Tip: NOW Magazine is strictly digital these days. During my teenage years, I read NOW Magazine practically religiously. It was a printed alternative weekly newspaper. I loved checking out the movie and concert listings. It also let me know what was going on in the city. I remember reading an article about Madonna. The author slammed everything about her. I was a huge Madonna fan and wrote a letter responding to the article, sharing my side of the coin. I'm pretty sure that I wrote the letter by hand. I said that she was a savvy businesswoman and worked hard to make ends meet. My letter got published in the following week's newspaper. It was a happy moment for me. I remember saving the newspaper clipping. I need to see if I still have it. I just learned that NOW Magazine stopped printing physical publications in August 2022. It's strictly digital these days and continues to be free. You can subscribe to its newspaper. You get content about local events and more sent to your inbox. I don't know how often it gets sent. Maybe I should subscribe! NOW Magazine brings back a lot of fond memories. I used to pick up my free copy at the Van Houtte Cafe on the same block where my parents and I lived. That cafe has changed over the years. It was a Starbucks before it became Pizzaiolo. I do like the articles. It's nice to reconnect with newspapers that I used to read. Hard to explain today how important NOW magazine was in the 80s. A go to for concert listings. Movie news, city happenings. Eventually a key player in providing a safe place and forum for sex industry escorts. Basically the online world was NOW's demise. The papers circulation has disappeared. For many today, it's unknown. It had its time for sure. It's a bit similar to vinyl, cassettes or rotary phones.. the world outgrew it. read more

I've been reading Now since I was a pre-teen. I used to fantasize about all the cool nightclubs I could be going to.. I also enjoyed the "Ernie Pooks Comeek" and "Life in Hell" comics, which are no longer published, As I've become an adult I've grown to find Now's knee-jerk leftist viewpoint laughable. I'm a bit of a liberal, but cannot support most of what Now passes off as journalism. Eye Magazine has a much more reasoned approach in my opinion. If it wasn't for Savage Love I wouldnt pick it up at all. Oh, and the ink rubs off on everything and makes a big mess. read more

Gotta love a paper that roasts Rob Ford for his drinking problem and then on the following page has a Best Places to Drink in TO guide. The journalism and op-ed pieces are for the most part borderline wacko and I skip them all together. The only reason I pick up a NOW mag is for the event listings otherwise I wouldn't even bother. I wonder what will happen when sideshow Rob leaves office and Whats Rob Ford Up To NOW magazine loses its seemingly only topic of discussion. read more

I can't hate Now for being what it is - Toronto's main independent weekly. But I have to say that the vast majority of the reasons I pick it up have to do with either being bored or looking up event listings. Or looking up event listings because I'm bored. I find the attempts at making local news and Canadian politics both interesting and relevant to a mass audience to be admirable. But overall I have a hard time getting too into any of the cover stories or features. I'd just as soon read local blogs than carry around a hulking mass of ad-laden newsprint. read more

I'm glad its around, but I usually end up wishing it had just a little more in it (and at the same time a lot less!) I felt that I would enjoy one to three well written bits, and then I'd leaf through the rest. I think its got some quality writing, but not enough of it, and a fair bit of weak writing. The NOW has been my go to guide for anything happening in TO since its inception way back. Over the last years I've noticed that the NOW thinks Toronto only exists in the area, from Queen to Ossington up to Bloor and across to Yonge and back down. It seems that any place to eat or drink in that area gets rave reviews but outside that area gets hardly a mentioned. As someone who lives a bit East of all that, I use to resent it, but now when I go to those areas I am glad we are overlooked, either the NOW has been part of the homogenization of that area or simply regards it all as so 'AWESOME' that they cannot see outside it. So please, keep doing what you are doing; the events listings are awesome, the movie reviews have always been spot on and ignoring the rest of TO, keeps us a bit safe, for now, from all those pseudo intellectuals, with non-sensical stickers on their aging MACs and silver spoon socialism. read more
