Cincinnati Acclaim is made up of a panel who vote on local and visiting theater performances. The…read morepanel is comprised of local actors, producers, arts managers, theater critics, students, and loyal fans. They really come from every angle of the business. Every year they choose the best of the best and the winners are recognized at the end of the season at the Acclaim Awards ceremony. The Acclaim committee also offers many grants and scholarships to the deserving community. They have a rising star award that offers $1000 to a Cincinnati Theater artist who is under 25. They offer grants to anyone who has one an acclaim award in the past for future endeavors. They offer an award to a theater educator every year from area high schools. This year my high school theater teacher and main inspiration won! Go Tom Peters! They offer grants to smaller theater companies so they can afford to hire a union Equity actor. Finally, they have the Theatre Forward Showcase which can be seen at the Fifth Third Theatre at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Sometime shows can receive an Acclaim award while it is still playing. On their website you can see a 'now playing' list of shows that have received such award. This group of active community members is a great example of how large and bustling the arts community in this city really is.

2015 Review - from a chronic Fringer…read more I love the Fringe Festival here. Granted, I have never been to another Fringe, but from what I hear, the Fringieness of CincyFringe is set to stun. Seriously though, I have yet to find another group of eclectic, open minded and welcoming bunch like the folks who frequent CincyFringe. This is my second year attending the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. I went in 2014 and dreamed about going again soon. The line-up for this year, of song and dance, dance and theatre, shadow puppets and one-woman specktaculars is not to be missed. There is something for everyone! For those with younger or more delicate ears and sensibilities, be sure to pay attention to the rating systems for content. Otherwise, don't be afraid to pop into a show even unplanned! You never know what's in store once you enter the doors of a Fringe show. However, as time goes on during the festival, and carrier pigeons and instagrams alike spread the word, tickets are snatched up quickly! Be sure to book your own tickets in advance if you're dying to see that part comedy, part zombie, part musical performance. When you're done enjoying the show, be sure to head to the Know Theatre for the evening's Fringe Bar Series. Every night there is a new theme, like discounted drinks (yes, there is a full bar beneath the theatre!), Fringe-oke, and riding Segways. And hit up the food trucks posted outside the door, guaranteed to fill your stomach with tasty bites.

Do not skip the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Do not skip the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Do Not Skip…read morethe Cincinnati Fringe Festival! What a wonderful two weeks of live theater and art, a celebration of spontaneity and universality. Every year, the Know Theatre reviews dozens of applications for the best plays and art displays to feature in these two weeks - what results is a mix of home grown talent and award winning Fringe plays from across the country, even some from other countries. The plays last an hour but every one I've seen almost leaves you asking for more. I also wanted to give a big shout out to the community that participates in this festival. It is a broad age range and a diverse group of people, but all are affected equally by the high energy one gets from performing and seeing such original works of art. The shows are well run by volunteers, staff, and interns, and they take place in OTR, all in walking distance of the Know Theatre. After the last show of the night concludes, the Know Theatre hosts the Know Underground parties and events in the downstairs lobby and theater. This includes variety shows and interviews with the performers and directors of the plays as well as live music. I look forward to Fringe every year.

I really like this movie theater!…read more First, the concessions area is great. The popcorn actually tastes like it has real butter instead of that super artificial oil flavor. They also have a small bar, so you can grab a glass of wine with your movie, plus the usual candy and snacks. And if you're a popcorn person, you can get a seriously huge bag. I saw someone walking out with a massive family sized bag and honestly respected it. The theater itself is very cozy and has that vintage charm you don't get at newer places. Even though it's small, it didn't feel stuffy or cold inside. I was totally comfortable in shorts. The seating is classic old-fashioned theater seating, no recliners or fancy upgrades, which honestly kind of adds to the nostalgic feel. That said, if you're looking for a super high-tech movie experience with perfect projection and luxury seats, you might want a bigger theater. The projector was a tiny bit oversized for the screen so a sliver of the image was cut off, which wasn't terrible but did catch my eye. Still, it didn't ruin the movie. One thing I loved is that they show older films, reruns, and niche movies along with new releases. It's a fun place to see something a little less mainstream while still having a cute date night in the heart of Mariemont Village. Overall, it's a charming, cozy theater that feels special in a way big chains don't. Perfect for a casual date night or a relaxed movie evening after getting dinner in the village.

If underground jazz is your thing, then the Loft Society is where you want to be. The setting is…read morevery intimate, as the living room of a 1 bedroom apartment has been converted into a musical venue, with the artists within touching distance of the concertgoers. The music is generally top-notch, though you can certainly run into a "new age" sound every once-in-a-while (and I supposed that's good if you're into that sort of thing). The hard part is finding out when there is a show. There's no website or mailing list, as far as I know, and the only way to learn of a show is to stop by the building and look for a flyer. Flyers for shows are usually out 3-4 weeks beforehand so you have time to plan. The only other downside is that it is somewhat pricey , at $20 a ticket (pay at the door), but they provide food and beverage. If you been looking for an intimate space that hosts underground jazz musicians from across the country, keep an eye out on Calhoun St. for a flyer and stop by The Loft Society. You won't be disappointed.
