Food was good, but did not have starter and had to wait 30+ minutes for mains, tried for 20minunites to order desert, but five staff either looked through or past us, once cycling group on sceen we were surrounded by sweaty, muddy cyclists and staff seem to have forgotten us. Paid for 2 courses despite not our fault ran out of time as allowed 1.5 hours for two courses and taxi on way, still got charged for food we did not have! Only concession was £2 off as wifi card reader not working! Gereral organisation was poor and waiting seemed to involve no one actually looking after our table, as dealt with three different staff.

Eventually got ousted off the pool table when a guy and his dad came in for their weekly one-off game. They each bet a fiver and winner takes the pot. The guy let his dad win (by a whisker) - what a gent! If you want wine, you have to buy one of those small one glass bottles (don't seem to be much of a call for the old vino up that neck of the woods) but other than that, the bar was well stocked. If you're in the area, I'd say give it a go. I was very pleasantly surprised.

We've got a soft spot for the Horseshoe as we had our wedding party upstairs 26 years ago. It's had several owners and changes since then as we'll as being closed for several yer. But with very little fuss it is now a great place to go. The landlord sets the tone by being understated but vey welcoming. He plays mixes of high quality pop and rock music, largely from the 60's and 70's which he does with some music loving locals in mind but it is delightful to hear Maggie May and Albatross rather than some mindless piped music. But it's the food that counts and the menu is generally typical pub food but with a touch of class that makes the trip through the back lanes near Pontypool worth it. Homemade Lasagne is exactly that; it's easy to make lasagne an average dish but here it is gorgeous. Served with generous garlic bread and a tasteful salad it cannot be faulted. Creme brûlée with lavender shortcake was lovely (lavender shortcake is adventurous but not quite for me) all served with efficiency and charm. Love the Horseshoe. It may be my favourite local restaurant.
