The General Public hooked me up good. So I went because I really love a good burger. I hate that I'm like this but a burger on a mediocre day can change my mindset. And if it's really good burger it'll make me a repeat customer. They've got me by the neck brother. I went on a Thursday because they have half off burgers? Fire. I went with two others, we all got different burgers and they all smacked. Then when I was leaving my homie told me he goes on another day for the bowls deal. Now I'm like dang. If they got something good for everyone then why not go everyday. They ain't burned me yet. Run here don't walk, read more

Where do I start? The jerk salad was absolutely fire. It was packed with flavor and definitely the highlight of our meal. Be sure to request extra jerk sauce too. The Plain Jane burger was just okay and the fries were tasty. This was my first time visiting, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to try new items. The owner, who is also the chef, was amazing, and the staff provided great service. We didn't have to wait long for our food, and the restaurant was super clean with a warm, welcoming vibe. Overall, it was a great experience. read more

GET THE STEAK BOWL! Man, you won't regret it. Everything here is good, the bowls seem to be really popular. I went for lunch with a few friends- overall we ordered; steak bowl, Caribbean bowl, hot honey chicken sandwich and veggie burger. Everything is made fresh to order. Our waitress was phenomenal. It's a smaller place but it was not packed as we were there on a Friday for lunch. I will definitely be back! read more

Service was fantastic, while he did forget something he agreed to bring, his energy was wonderful. Bar is modest; they had no Mezcal and our server hadnt of it. Salmon burger was ok if not a little greasy. Poor ventilation in the space had me wishing for fresh air. My family loves the GP, so I'd come back to try something different. Two word review: waffle fries. read more

I've eaten here quite a few times. This will be the first time I've been disappointed. I ordered lemon pepper wings. I get that they are smoked which is fine, but they had minimal lemon pepper flavor. I've had other items that I would definitely order again and again but definitely not the wings. read more

We stopped by during Sail 250 event downtown. The restaurant was not even half full. The waitress, Janiya, was not interested in providing customer service. Upon ordering, we learned the restaurant was our of burgers. We got sodas in a can, with no cups, no ice and no straws. I asked for water and cups and received water. Some people don't like drinking from the can. The food was ok. When paying we were told there was a $9.60 service charge added since the restaurant was so busy. When we looked at the receipt, it showed the 9.60 as a gratuity. read more

Food may be good. I guess I'll never know. Host took our order and showed up one hour later just to double check the order, after around 80 minutes, we received the first part of the order but not the rest. We asked to pay for the part that we had consumed and to cancel the rest, since we were not willing to wait for another hour. Host took way too long to give us our check so we can finally pay and leave. Personally, if you live around and have a lot of extra time, it may be worth it, but if you're visiting and have limited time to be around don't even waste it here. read more

3.5 Rating First visit and I thought you ordered at the counter but after I stood at the counter for a minute the waitress asked if I was dining in and said I could sit and she would come to me. She was friendly throughout. I ordered the turkey sandwich and fries. It arrived timely and the fries were hot and crisp. The roof had a leak due to recent storms but they had a large trash can under it. Would not be good for large groups if they were busy. read more

Second time trying their food and I'm still amazed by the flavors. Wasn't sure how authentic the jerk chicken would taste but it had the perfect amount of seasoning and spices to taste like actual jerk chicken. Wasn't a fan of the raisins in the carrot slaw, which I had to pick out. Defintiely a small restaurant worth checking out! read more

I grabbed dinner here the other day. I tried the buffalo wings. They had a combo of smoke and grill flavoring. I also tried the coconut curry shrimp public bowl, which was very flavorful. I also got a Caribbean jerk public bowl. There wasn't as much heat with the jerk, but if you don't like any spice, I recommend getting something else. The beans in the Caribbean bowl weren't as tender as I would've liked. They have a good amount of tables and seating. The staff is really nice and answered all of my questions. The prices are reasonable. I'd go back and try something else. read more

If I could give it 0 stars I would! The OWNER apparently, doesn't like dogs, even service animals in their establishment. This place will take your money if you have a service animal, so long as you take your order to go..."yeah, see, that's not gonna work, the owner doesn't allow dogs in the restaurant unless it's to go". Thanks for telling me you're violating the Americans with Disabilities Act without telling me! read more

I've ordered here twice now and both times I haven't been disappointed. First was through a food delivery app and the second was a walk in order. Service was very good and we got over food very fast. Burger and fries were very good. Caribbean bowl was a bit dry and didn't live up to the rave reviews. No issues with customer service, yet restaurant is very casual. I have been a regular at this location for several months now. I always order the exact same thing. A dozen wings, all flats, extra crispy. Today was one of the first times that I ordered something to go. When I receive my order, the staff at the front indicated that they put my ranch inside. They had included napkins and then they tied and put a knot in my bag. I then proceeded to walk all the way back to my office to find my food completely burnt. I then walked back downstairs and down the street to this location, and when I asked them for an explanation, the woman had the audacity to look in my eye and tell me it's because " I ordered them extra crispy".... The fact that this woman looked at these wings, thought them acceptable, put my ranch inside the bag and then tied it and nodded it so I couldn't even look at them in the store was crazy. Horrible customer service, horrible quality. Neither I nor anyone from my office will be returning to this location. read more

The General Public is an okay spot overall. The atmosphere is lively, and the staff were polite, but the service was a bit slow when it got busy. A bit dark to walk in on a bright day but the space is clean. Ordering at the counter is efficient then the meal was brought to my table though it took a little longer than expected. I ordered a shrimp wrap. Upon receipt I found I had gotten a chicken wrap instead. I did take a bite before realizing it was wrong. I was not impressed with it. I went to The General Public on Grandy, they are fairly new. I had the Carolina Burger with pulled pork and coleslaw with waffle fries. The patties were balled by hand, so the burger wasn't too dense. I won't do justice in my description of the burger patty, but it was juicy, really good, and very messy. They made it perfectly medium rare. For desert, I had red velvet cheescake balls. They were delicious. I hate myself for eating so much, but it's so worth it. The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. You will not be disappointed. read more

I had high hopes but my Thai bowl was bland, more butter than spice. Needs a little bit of a kick. They have a walkup counter, but if you eat there you're supposed to sit down and order with the waitress. I went up to the counter to pay since she hadn't dropped by in a while. I'm most upset about all the great reviews that got me to try this place. Y'all lied. Service was ok. Drinks do not come with refills. It took 45 mins to get a chicken sandwich with fries and their loaded fries. They aren't loaded by the way and served in a bowl causing most of the fries to have nothing on them. There were only 2 other people in the place with to go boxes already on their table. The fries were fried too long that they were almost painful to eat. Their ranch is from a bottle and it isn't good. Sandwich was ok but nothing to rave about. Definitely, will not be back. read more

Their chimichurri steak bowl was really good. My fiancé has the chicken wrap with the chimichurri fries and he was happy with it too. My first visit to Norfolk, and according to Google Maps, Granby St seemed to have a good selection of restaurants. I wandered in off the street to The General Public on the basis of the menu in the window and I'm glad I did A varied menu at reasonable prices serving local fare like burgers, salads, sandwiches etc along with some international flavors.......and a selection of bowls.....I love bowls! I chose a Caribbean bowl with Jerk Chicken, sauteed cabbage, rice, beans, carrot slaw and jerk sauce. Nice heat and a touch of after urn...perfect. Sit down or take out. Great staff. Thanks for a great meal! read more

Just stopped in for a quick lunch. I was recommended the Caribbean bowl by the lady who took my order and it is surprisingly good. All of the components are well seasoned and cook properly. The rice has a great texture, the chicken is tender, the beans and cabbage are a welcome addition to the meal making it more well balanced. I will say I'm not crazy about the carrot slaw but I think it's just a personal preference. For 15 dollars a bowl it's not cheap but still good food that doesn't make you feel like crap. read more
