My friend and I decided to learn how to make some jewelry, and I'm so glad we did! So the gem studio is located inside the international marketplace (we parked at Target and took the elevator down to the first floor). If you're coming from Target, walk straight until you see an open area to the right; it's around that corner (across from Maui Divers). Super easy to find! When we walked in, we were greeted by Jen, who happened to be our instructor as well! There are charms to pick from on the left side of the store, a table of different gems in the middle, and, to the right, a station for permanent jewelry! You'll have a base pay for what you're making, and then you'll be charged for the gems or charms when you add them on (prices are behind the gems, and charms will have a price in each of their little cubbies). My friend and I initially wanted to do the silversmith class, but we were so intrigued by the inlay, so we chose that instead! Honestly, it was super easy to make! The band has an empty center for you to crush the gems of your choosing (they offer a variety to choose from). So you crush your gems, then put a little, and I mean LITTLE, bit of resin in the empty center, place your gems on it, then cure it with the UV light and continue all around until you're done! Then you do the big curing, your artist will smooth it for you in the grinder, then you polish it by hand, then polish it on the machine! In total, it took us about an hour and a half. I honestly had so much fun and learned so much that I can't wait to do it again! All in all, my friend and I have already decided that we're coming back and trying a different project! read more

I happened to get a targeted Instagram ad while I was visiting Oahu for The Gem Studio and wanted to give it a try! I was able to book a last minute reservation same day. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Gwen who was friendly and gave me the run down of how everything worked. I signed up for the charms workshop so first thing was choosing a chain. They have a bunch of chains (both gold and silver) to choose from ranging from $30-$120. I chose a gold filled paper clip chain for $105. The pricing also differs if you're planning on doing either a necklace or bracelet. Then you get to choose the chain length, which they have some that you can try on. I chose the 18inch which was perfect for me. Picking out the charms was the fun part! However, it gets pretty crowded and busy with people picking out their charms. This overwhelmed me a bit but I managed to pick out some cute charms. They have tons to choose from ranging from $3-$10! Once you choose your charms, they set you up at a station and show you how to add the clasps to the necklace. This was really fun even being by myself however I'm sure it would be more fun with a friend or family member. Just go to their website and book your appointment. They are located on the first floor of the shopping center right by Rolex. I was originally referred by a friend who purchased some beautiful jewelry from here, but the selection of stones/gems wasn't as fabulous when I went to create my look. I don't fault Gem Studio because stones and gems are unique and vary in look, size, color, and clarity, so sometimes you win and sometimes lose. I found out about this place from someone I know. I had no idea it opened last year! I took my daughter and her friend and we made silver rings. The instructor, Caroline was so kind, encouraging and patient. She showed us how to make the rings step by step. Each of us chose a different ring and they all came out beautifully. Afterwards, she told us there was a cotton candy machine and made us cotton candy! She took a Polaroid of us to put on the wall and offered to take picture of us using my phone. One of the great things about having friends who visit is they introduce you to places and things you would not normally do as a local. Yesterday I got invited to make silver jewelry at studio shop located on the ground floor of the International Marketplace. There is a base fee of $95 that includes instruction, basic silver & other materials, and use of the equipment. You can bring in your own stones or shells or purchase one of the many they have. Be sure to make an appointment and allot for at least 1.5 hours but possibly more. You will go through the steps of measuring, cutting, hammering, soldering, polishing, buffing, and burnishing your ring or bracelet. A unique and fun experience with a precious keepsake to take home or gift to someone special. This is a great outing for girlfriends, sisters, moms and daughters and anyone else interested in making their own jewelry. Initially I gave 5 stars because I think this is such a cool place and I want them to succeed, but I knocked off a star because it's true that it took us longer than expected. This was probably because there was only 1 person trying to help 4 of us. Also our rings came out a little bigger than anticipated. This is such a neat idea for a girls night out, self care day, or any old day! I went with my aunts, cousin, and mom and they had a blast. Three of us made sterling silver rings, one made the ring inlay, and the other opted to buy one that was on display. FYI, ring inlay takes longer than you think. So plan accordingly! We booked at 6pm and left around 8:30 pm. Like making the inlay make sure you have time allotted for that! I think the time issue seemed to be due to low staffing. It was just our instructor Ashley who had help from Emily. Ashley was a great instructor that knew what she was doing and kept the experience fun! Found out she's a mom, so makes sense she was able to juggle two groups she was teaching, man the register, and keep an eye on EVERYTHING (including being security). Emily was so sweet too! She kept up with walk in after walk in for the permeant jewelry. When she had a free hand she made sure to help Ashley. Overall, she kept a professional and fun demeanor. I think if there was more than one instructor for a shift it would balance out the responsibilities. We plan on coming back in the winter when my cousin graduates! Such a special way to mark an occasion. Please come to San Diego! I could definitely see this kind of thing becoming popular with college students in a mall like UTC. Visited the Gem Studio on a whim! Over the course of my vacation I had walked past by curious but thinking I would have to sign up for a workshop in advance. However I was wrong! Yesterday on a quiet Monday evening the store was fairly empty so I wandered my way in. I wanted to make a gift for my husband who hadn't joined my vacation and found out that silver rings were only $30 (this includes the process of me making it with the guidance of the instructor, any stamping I wanted to add to the ring, and sizing!). The entire process probably took around 20 minutes (I believe if you want jewelry with a stone it'll take longer. The instructor was super nice and supportive throughout the process! We started off with stamping my personalizations, hammering the metal to make it more circular, using a mini torch to seal the ring, and then buffing the ring for added shine. Some elements the instructor did herself like an acid wash and buffing the inside of the ring but for the most part you're doing most of the work with guidance which was really fun and engaging. The overall product I created is a little grunge and definitely has hand made elements to it, however for the price I thought it was a steal! $30 getting to create it myself, personalize it, vs. spending money at a kiosk for something where they do it themselves and you don't get the learning/hands on experience. read more

We were helped by Olivia. When we first arrived I was sharing with her that the place was hard to find and we asked at least 6 people if they knew where the store was and everyone was redirecting us the wrong way. I also shared that there's no phone number listed to call the store directly. There's a number listed to message them. When I told her I left like 3 messages she looked at her computer and said "oh." As if "oh" she forgot to check messages that day. She completely ignored what I said and walked away. Aside from that, the experience was fun. Our party was the only ones doing the workshop. None of us thought it was worth the amount we paid however. Also half way though our class, another instructor comes in and she sits down to make her own ring. Two girls come in, to also start their class, and the instructor doesn't acknowledge them as if she doesn't want to be bothered or interrupted from making her own personal jewelry.
