I'm so glad we did as the food was delicious and the service super friendly. We knew we were at the right place when we saw a lot of folks from our ship including a couple of the bands. We chose the 20 minute walk from the ship which was very nice, but there was also a free shuttle to downtown. Check out the nearby trail along the creek back to the ship for a scenic nature walk.

Worst experience of my life!! Will not return…read more I went inside to get a drink and was informed that you can't order a drink unless you order food. New rule, weird but no biggie I came to have a plate of steamed mussels as well. Only to be told they took them off the menu. So I asked what's on your menu now that is gluten free as I have a pretty bad allergy. The young girl tells me there's nothing on the menu that's gluten free and went into the back of house to speak with someone about this dilemma as I would still like to have a drink while I wait for my friends even tho I can't eat anything they sell but she quickly returned with a firm. "No, we can't sell you just a drink, we are a restaurant and there has to be a food sale on the receipt will any drinks" I was blown away, I have never felt such prejudice in my life. This BAR & GRILL is not within walking distance of anywhere else that I could have gotten food or drink and I don't think they should be refusing service to anyone especially because their menu is lacking and can not accommodate to common allergies. So shoes, no shirt, no allergies.

I wish my phone had not died last night while roaming the streets of Deer Lake. There is one good…read morething about bars buried within a sleeping town. The music makes them easy to find. I am positive a local would have a different perspective about the Hideaway, however as a tourist here were my few thoughts. I was looking for a bar with an upbeat vibe and that is exactly what I found. For a small town, about 6,500 people I believe the bar was great. A lively crowd that generally made even the obvious outsider welcome (well ok, maybe there was one guy that needed to emphasize his territory, with a few elbows while pushing his way at the bar and a ohh so scary muscle man pose like a little puppy marking his territory). The crowd was a nice mix for young people in their twenties, thirties, through to fourties, and more. No matter your age, you were well represented. The two bar staff were super friendly and attentive, and a large beer and liquor selection. You name it, they generally had it. However, what topped the visit was the DJ. Boy, could he mix - Kept the small dance floor hopping, and a great selection of music. Honestly, he could have easily put many of the DJ's in most big city clubs to shame. Do not let a strange town intimidate you. I am glad I went for the wander and got out to see Deer Lake's night life.

We had a full day of hiking at Cape Blow Me Down and Cedar Cove, and we were ready to eat some good food. Lark Harbour is a tiny little bayside town with small colorful homes dotting the hillside overlooking this scenic setting. As soon as you walk in, you'll see a pool table and a couple of electronic casino games. There's a little bar, and several tables inside the dining room. Where you want to sit here, if the weather cooperates, is outside on the deck. This looks across the deep blue water across to the forested hills of Blow Me Down Provincial Park. What a view. At the same time we arrived, it seems like every local and tourist in the area got there at the same time. They were busy, and they just had one very nice woman waiting tables and (I assume) Mrs. Myrtle was back in the kitchen making all of the incredible food. We went into this place without having any expectations, figuring we'd get some decent fish and chips. The beer selection was mostly just domestic cans and bottles, so we opted for the cool blue Quidi Vidi Iceberg lager bottles. The outdoor deck was full when we arrived, but it opened up right about the time our meal arrived. We learned early on that you should try the seafood chowder at every single place you visit that offers it. On this stop, we almost forgot but I ordered it and we were treated with the #1 favorite during our entire trip. That chowder had huge chunks of lobster, crab, and I'm pretty sure a little salmon. Around the rim were a couple of fresh local steamed mussels. I'm not a big mussel fan, but those were fantastic. The chowder had the absolute best spice combination, and I am thinking they use a bit of paprika to give it this little orange gleam around the outside edge. We also split a fish and chips, and once again that turned out to be the best one we had in our whole trip. They have halibut fish and chips on the menu, but it was not in season on our visit. The staff here is working their tail off, and it may take a little longer if they are very busy. Just be patient, it'll pay off in the end! I can't recommend this place enough.
