Meh! Had high hopes for this place, so much so I drove 30mins out of my way to finally give this place a shot. Headed there for brunch, seated by staff quickly however the greeting was a little lacklustre and it was almost an effort to walk us to our table. After a few minutes the waiter returned and again, without any pleasantries grunted about ordering. Ordered, hubby had the full breakfast and I had poached eggs, bacon and toast which should have had relish but the chef must have forgotten, it was only has I was eating it I was like, plate is a little dry and it dawned on me. Food came out from the kitchen quickly however everything was just rather bland; my poached eggs where overcooked and unfortunately had a nasty dose of vinegar. Coffee, well I'll admit I'm a bit of a coffee snob so it just wasn't for me :-( read more

I have eaten here many times and on every occasion, it falls short but tonight's experience was probably the worst ever. We were on an early booking, 5 pm, as we had 3 babies with us, two of which were in buggies. We were seated at a round table with fixed seating on one side and with 6 adults, 1 toddler and 2 buggies not ideal when we they could have seated us on a long table. Added we were seated beside the kitchen entrance/pass where one buggy had to go. The staff were not very pleasant and seemed more about chatting and serving tea/coffee to the kitchen than serving the customer. The waiter who served us barely spoke English and was like Manuel in faulty towers, his answer to every question was "yes". Waiter: would you like a drink? Customer: Can I have a vodka and diet coke, please. Waiter: Yes Customer: Do you have Smirnoff Vodka Waiter: Yes What arrives at the table, a coca cola no Vodka. I ordered pasta with a carbonara sauce and added chicken. What arrived was a tasteless unseasoned dish. The pasta we just about cooked, the sauce was basically water, the chicken was dry. I did something I rarely ever do and added salt and pepper to the dish just to try and make it edible, no such luck that didn't work. When the waiter cleared the table I told him the dish was not good which is why I didn't eat it, he smiled and said yes. No follow-up or apologies about my dish, I doubt he even told the chef or manager. We had pre-ordered a dessert as a birthday surprise however this was ruined as the waiter didn't understand, subtle wasn't helpful here. I ordered a coffee from the Manager, a small Americano, as I watched rocking my son to sleep I saw a number of coffees made and teas made which seemed to pass me and make there a way to the kitchen but nothing stopped at me. It was the only coffee order at our table and there were only 3 other customers so not easy to forget one coffee. I would not recommend this as a family location, at one point I had my baby asleep and a person came in slamming mini flower vases on the tables and guess what, they woke the baby. When we were leaving no assistance was offered to open the doors etc. as it was going to interrupt the staff having a chat. I was carrying a baby, a baby bag, and pushing a buggy so it was obvious walking out a set of double doors was not going to be easy. I like the gables. Lovely interior. Half wine shop and half restaurant. So Ya can have a little potter while you wait for your grub. Foods Yum and good qual. Usually come here for breakie/brunch with the rents. French toast is great. Usuall go for the berries and crème fraiche, but sometimes if I'm feeling salty the bacon and sizzzurp is gudd. Coffee is nice. Diet cokes are very small and scabby. Not a fan of that carry on. Staff are nothing memorable, not exceptionally nice or anything. I like gables tho. You get what ya want, cooked well and for an average piece. No huge complaints :) read more

A really nice little eatery this.... the blurb says modern food with an international tone in congenial surroundings and that pretty much sums it up. Any time I have eaten there the menu has had a definite leaning towards the oriental (which works for me). The surround is bright and open and airy and the quality of the food served is spot on. More of a sunday lunch place than late dining but maybe that's just me! read more

We came back; for the New Year gives new chances... We were welcomed in style, very friendly and with a smile. Great starting point! The food, beef brisket in my case, was a very good choice indeed; very tasty, and well presented with bits of bacon, and mushrooms. And the mash was complimenting the dish excellently. Our choice of side vegs; in 3 little bowls (nice pottery work!) were just scrumptious! I was very happy to give this place a second chance; I definitely will come back again. read more

Just back from eating and drinking at The Gables in what is a relaxed and chilled atmosphere with pretty good food and a great selection of wine thanks to having shared premises with McCabes wine shop. Very good service and reasonably priced. We hadn't booked but they found us a table for 2 at 8.30pm. Also great for a coffee or a glass of wine at any time right in the heart of Foxrock village. read more

Lovely, efficient staff. Friendly vibe. Great coffee. I ordered French toast with berries. Was gorgeous. Only qualm was it was a single slice priced at nearly €9. I think two pieces is generally expected when ordering French toast, right? (Or am I being greedy?). Seeing as it was brunch I ordered a dessert afterwards. Chocolate bread and butter pudding with icecream. Lovely but a bit on the small side. Food was fresh and tasty. Staff were excellent. Will definitely be back here. A great place to catch up with friends and treat yourself as it's energetic, modern and has great food. Total cost for French toast, with extra sausage and bacon, coffee and the dessert with tip was €20. read more

Are you a retired lady from one of Dublin's more opulent neighbourhoods, just finished your morning golf, looking for a nice place to have a cup of tea and compare your collection of heavy gold jewelry that actually weighs you down and affects your golf swing? Then this is the place for you! Well, it's not far off that if you are here around lunch time. The food is very average - the two times I ate here the menu was intriguing but was certainly lacking in taste. So much so I can't actually remember what I had. The selection in the attached wine shop is so-so but it is sufficient if you want to move on from tea back to your buddy's conservatory for the afternoon, sipping sherry. read more

I've had a few lunches here and I've always enjoyed myself. The food is good and there's a nice casual atmosphere. The fact that its in Foxrock is a bit of downside though. When given the choice I would always rather go somewere closer to town. In fact, if you're going to make the trip out to Foxrock, you'd probably be better off dining at Bistro One just across the road. read more

Have been coming here for years with my family. I love this place. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed and tall ceilings provide good sound when the odd time I've been in there when there is love music. When I'm up there for dinner I usually start with the prawns and then get the chicken breast for my main, both delicious! It's also a great spot for breakfast or brunch on a Saturday or Sunday. Great restaurant and it helps that it's 2 minutes from my house! read more

Just an update to my review, as I recently went there for a weekend breakfast, and that was fantastic: good menu with all the breakfast staples (full irish, eggs benedict, french toast..), nice sandwiches, the quality was really good, the food was fast to arrive and the price good value. Great little local place. Their breakfast and brunch is always fab. You can select an amazing bottle of wine from their off-licence. Their steak never fails to please. It's been a few years since I'd been here so was happy to check it out once more on a business lunch. They've changed the decor quite a bit, opening up the dining room. It's certainly brighter but it's also bland and has lost a lot of the charm it once had. It had the usual mixture of ladies who lunch and office groups from nearby Sandyford all lost in their own worlds. So were the staff. Throughout the meal, attracting the attention of any passing waitperson was an achievement. They use a mobile app to take orders but the same device appears to be a source of considerable interest, especially to the young man who was supposed to look after us. The food was only meh. I opted for fish and chips. The batter left that floury aftertaste of undercooking and the fish oozed water. Wet and not so good. Chips were excellent though. Latte to finish was good as well. Pity. Used to be a great go-to place in Foxrock. Also, unforgivably, the revamp seems to have taken out the excellent wine shop. What remains is a pale imitation. read more

Got the burger. It's nice but got it far too overcooked. Got a new one with a discount. Had no choice on how the burger was cooked which is disappointing. The chips are similar to wedges in size and the oil in which they were cooked in was a little old. The chips were unsalted and there was no salt mill on the table so they were quite bland. The restaurant could do with some soundproofing as it's very noisy (which could be easily and discreetly added to the ceiling). read more

I have been coming to the gables for years with family and friends, Its a great spot tucked away in foxrock village. The building is beautiful. The interior is nice but i preferred it before its revamp. The staff are extremely friendly and very professional. The prices are affordable and the food is delicious. The fish a chips and the black pudding salad (which they no longer seem to do) are my favorites on the evening menu The brunch menu on the weekend is exactly what you want after a night out. A perfect place for a family meal or a catch up with the girls. The wine shop side has a wonderful selection of wines which you can drink in the restaurant or to bring home, I would recommend. read more

Good food in nice a location, one of the better restaurants on the southside

Went here about a month ago - four of us (me, husband and a couple of friends visiting us from Los Angeles). We have eaten here loads of times and brought our friends because we always found the food to be reliable, service friendly and overall a very pleasant experience - not now though! The service was reminiscent of 1980s bad chinese restaurant. Our friend tried to order a beer at the same time as his main course and was told to wait - the drink order would be taken later! The food was nothing special and plates of food dumped in front of us. I know this sounds fussy and pernickety but one of the great things about the Gables was always the really friendly but professional service. This was grumpy and unprofessional. It was rescued towards the end of the evening by a young guy who was great but at that stage to be honest we just wanted to go home. The food (this is a restaurant!) seems to have really dropped in standard. I had fish with fennel and it was a curious mix of extreme saltiness and tastelessness! Steak was beyond chewy - overall it just wasn't of a very high standard and you came away with the impression that they just didn't care too much. The wine list is always a feature and remains so but unfortunately for us we weren't really drinking this night so we left feeling quite glum! It's a pity because we brought our friends here a year ago and they really enjoyed the food, the service and the overall experience. Somebody needs to start caring or this great local restaurant will have problems. read more
