This is a wonderful little museum located just three miles west of Ligonier. I do want to emphasize…read morethe word "little" since the museum itself is housed in the former Darlington Station, used by the Ligonier Valley Railroad. But though it be small, it be mighty and chock full of exhibits and information. The mission of the museum is to preserve the history of the Ligonier Valley Railroad, which ran from 1877 to 1952, carrying millions of people and tons (literally) of freight. In the name of preserving that history, the museum has collected over 3,000 items, from lanterns to dinnerware to maps to photos...and so on. The volunteers are wonderful and knowledgeable, so I definitely recommend letting them talk you through the highlights of the collection and the railroad's operations. Their storytelling abilities truly brought the history behind this museum to life when I visited; and their insight into the railroad's influence and impact helped me appreciate the area that much more as I walked through Ligonier itself. Definitely take the time to visit this little gem during your next trip through Ligonier. Before you leave, take the time to explore the caboose housed on the property as well!

The museum is housed in a beautifully restored 1896 depot. The former owner of the Ligonier Valley…read moreRR was the famous Mellon family. Outside an assortment of rail artifacts and in the future, perhaps a motorcar. Although the collection of artifacts is small, the tour guide fills out the time with much history and LGV RR stories.

The Pittsburgh Tour Company - This was one of many of our museum visits, one we would have missed if not for the hop on hop off tour.

Then we got off again, they were 15 min early (from posted time). So we walked a couple of miles so we didn't just have to stand there. 20 min late again after getting here 20 min early so we wouldn't be left on the side of the road again. Ride at your own risk in terms of being flexible. On a positive point, the guys doing the narrative/guides were great! You pay extra for "hop and stop" the pick ups need to be a little more accurate. Don't tell us to be there 5 min early when you need to 25 min early and be willing to wait 25 min after scheduled pick ups.

The company was unusually considerate and WAITED for us when we got stuck in traffic on our way there. Not long, but WHO DOES THIS? Our guide was so funny (family friendly humor), personable, entertaining, interesting and seemed like he sincerely enjoyed his job. We learned so much and got a wonderful tour of the city! We left feeling a newfound respect and appreciation for Pittsburgh after taking it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The Westmoreland Arts & Crafts Heritage Festival is in its 42nd year and is always scheduled around the 4th of July weekend. It is located in Twin Lakes Park. This year, it runs from June 20 through July 3. Over the years, it has expanded and attracted artisans from all over the country. The items for sale range from wood crafts, jewelry, pottery, art prints and paintings, plants and other specialties. Also, one can wander through the park and find great food to purchase. Popular choices for many are the fresh raspberries and ice cream, fried vegetables, and wood fired pizza. I tried steak fajitas ($7 for two) and French beignets ($4 for about 8) from one food booth. I was very pleased with both. There are several stages that offer different musical genres. A schedule for performers can be found on the web site. The Island Stage is the main performance area, but check out the stage located a short distance from the boat house. Around that stage are several craft and food booths. If you feel like walking, there are reenactors located on the upper lake. So, there is plenty to see, music to listen to, food to eat and beautiful items for purchase. There is also an area for kids to make crafts and play. CONS: Although, things are spaced throughout, this festival draws a big crowd. Sometimes a little patience and a smile is needed when waiting in food lines. No alcohol is served, but there are water, cola, Gatorade booths. The thing is you have to purchase tickets to buy your beverage. I don't know, why not use cash for beverages, too? Parking is sometimes at a premium but some people let you park on their property for a price. There are shuttle buses available, but riding in a hot school bus isn't something I care to do. They seem to have a good system though, by dropping passengers off at an entrance area of the park and picking riders up at the other end. No dogs are allowed in the festival area. I think this is a very nice way to spend time over the holiday and has something for everyone. More information can be found on their web site.
