ITS SPOOKY SZN!! I tried out the ScareHouse Haunted House with my teenagers this evening and we had a lot of fun being scared through every twist and turn of the house! We arrived later in the evening around 7:45 pm and had to wait in line for about a half hour. Since it's a Sunday evening I'd imagine the line length might be a little longer on a Friday or Saturday evening. The Haunted house itself takes about a good half hour to get through and has A LOT of different features throughout. Overall the makeup, staging, and props are very well done and the staff was very professional. Definitely recommend for older kids if you're considering bringing them along, might be too scary for a younger crew. I haven't done a haunted house in years! So I was extra excited to do this one, especially since it was indoors. The tickets were inexpensive and timed which was great. We did wait in line for about 15 minutes but it was kept neat and orderly. The haunted house has amazing decorations and costumes and the actors seemed really committed. I'm a difficult one to scare (I've worked in customer service most of my life) but I definitely had a few mini jumps. All in all, a great house. Just wished the theme had been more cohesive. ScareHouse was a great event. The price is slightly expensive for one haunted house, but the length of the maze through the house compensates for that. The staff does a great job explaining the instructions prior to entering. Once inside let the frightening begin. The actor were amazing at blending in with the scene, making it hard to expect what was coming. There were several moments where I jumped and yelled out. My recommendation is to not be first or last in your group. I was last and the actors followed me several times...causing me to run into others in my group! I definitely recommend! read more

*Standing Ovation!* I attended Scarehouse as part of the legendary Haunt tour, and they truly saved the best for last. The scarehouse actors put on a great show, I was very happy with what I saw. The scenery, the costumes, the layout were all well beyond what I expected. I loved the pre-show, loved the 1920's seance table - a true antique. The museum part of the haunt was extremely interesting to me, especially the girl in the glass, She was FANTASTIC. I'd like to know if the "Crying Girl painting" is a real one, given the history behind the painting and all. The Actress on the stage gave it her all and was phenomenal. THat whole set part was awesome. The clowns in the turn-around-room were excellent too! I have so much that I loved about the haunt, but the ending left me a little sad, All the build up and then *Blap* it was over. That's the negative of it. It ended on a weaksauce note. I also did the Basement, and I understand how some would be squicked, but Me? I laughed my ass off through the whole thing. I found it more arousing than anything. It wasn't -scary- to me by any means, but I'm the odd duck out, I deal in kink and such, so much of this was my daily dealings. When they handed me the bat to beat my partner, I squeed with Glee! Listen. I know we are in the middle of a pandemic, but if you can't go the whole 9 yards, don't do it at all. There were about 6 actors that I counted. If there were more than that they didn't do a great job at letting us know they were there. They say they're following covid protocol, but my group ran into the group in front of us, and there was a group literally running into my husband from behind. We have been to other haunted houses that did a fantastic job, both following protocol AND fulfilling the scare requirement. Not as scary as it once was but still a good bit of jump scares. The customer service is top notch. We were given a free RIP upgrade, due to my using a wheelchair. Only thing is that if you're a full time wheelchair user who can't get out of your chair at all, you probably won't be able to make it through. Fun and scary haunted house, but buy your tickets ($20) in advance and do NOT go on a Friday or Saturday evening. We waited over 2 hours in line to get in on a Friday night! There were some entertainers (zombie, cross-dresser, and dirty axe-wielding rabbit) while you are in line, but it was cold, and really not worth that long of a wait. The house itself took about half an hour to get through. The decorations in the house are intricate and creepy. There are maggots, cobwebs, and all sorts of strange statues, paintings, and rooms. Many scary creatures jump out at you throughout. They have the Forsaken: a haunted carnival, Creepos Christmas in 3-d: you put on 3d glasses, and Pittsburgh Zombies: where zombies roam and terrify. It's single-file throughout the house--being at the front of your group is the best and scariest experience. I enjoyed the vortex tunnel, where you feel like the walkway is spinning around, but its really an optical illusion where just the walls are. Some sections are very tight and make you feel claustrophobic. Overall, a scary good time--just avoid the wait. read more

Props to the actors of Scarehouse , they really did put on a good show. That being said , I'm 30 and I wouldn't say I was necessarily scared other than startled from props/people jumping out at you. The line isn't worth it but the ticket to jump the line is ridiculous and not worth the money in my opinion. I was excited to experience this place for the first time and everyone has a right to their opinion but this is mine. It was very over priced and you stand inline longer then actually walking through the actual fright itself. It was like walking through a spirit Halloween store only in dimmed and goulash lights. There was more Anamatronics than actual actors. Turn even though you go with your group you end up catching up with others in front of you and don't get the Anamatronics scares. I spend a lot of time going around the country to visit haunted house. What makes The Scarehouse so special is its 18+ haunt/theater experience. I would recommend visiting that. I had a great time at ScareHouse. The location inside the mall is perfect for lines and not having to wait out in the elements. The actors and props were scary and funny. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have some fun and be scared at the same time. read more

As with last year, The Scarehouse didn't disappoint. While we did go early in the season to beat the rush that we had last year, anyone going to this attraction should budget a few hours. The lines can be long (but there is a well worth it VIP which does cut some time off your wait,) but you do get a solid 20-30 minute experience once inside. This is done right,in small groups going in, without a constant stream of people pushing behind you so as to miss the many details. The queue is clean and well put together, and as you snake in, it does build quite a bit of suspense. My final tip is to go the Turn Out The Lights this year, as last year it was the crowing glory of the haunt...with just a glowstick, it makes for a totally unique experience. read more

You're involved from the get-go. Suckers in line have their ankles threatened or cautiously turn around to meet grotesque figures breathing down their necks. And inside, a true shop of horrors waits. You'll circumnavigate dark winding hallways with a new fright around every corner. You'll find yourself staring at figures to determine whether they're real or not, only to have them come to life and deliver something approaching cardiac arrest. Crazed Go-Go girls dance about on raised platforms as you try to walk across a shifting bridge while wearing the equivalent of LSD goggles. Neon, strobes, bright flashes, ground movement and a discombobulating walk are accompanied by ubiquitous shrieks, knocks and sinister laughing. And zombie lovers will not be disappointed. The Scarehouse employs both varieties: The quick moving 28 Days Later type and Night of the Living Dead sort both make impressive cameos. It's taken a few days of processing and consideration, but I'm finally feeling able to sit down and complete my review for the Scarehouse. A review for a haunted house is a delicate thing much like the bones of a skeletal bird. You want to be accurate and thorough, at the same time though you don't want to give away any of the things that make it a great experience. The very last thing I would want to do is ruin this for anyone else. It's no surprise I'm sure, that I'm extremely into Halloween. I really celebrate it year round and haunted houses are the pièce de résistance for me. It's something you don't get any other time of year and it helps me look forward to it every year. Pittsburgh has it's fair share of haunted houses too. With our Romero/zombie legacy it's easy to see why we would get so excited (keep in mind though, kids, zombies aren't just for Halloween). Scarehouse is one of the best in the COUNTRY not just in this city. It's very clear that they spend a great deal of time in planning the interior decor, the costumes, and the acting. I honestly almost peed a little more than once. (No worries, Yelpers, I managed to get through without weeing.) This year you get treated to 3 attractions total: Pittsburgh Zombies, Delirium 3-D, and The Forsaken. (Although not in that order.) The Forsaken is a Carnival of Horrors but it's more than that. It's scenes from people's lives. Rooms inside of a home in the most macabre horrible way. A slaughter house with the only real thing missing is that putrid rotting smell. All of the things you don't want to think about in that dark dilapidated boarded up house or farm on the far end of your neighborhood street. Delirium 3-D is a black light 3-D dance party. It's twisted, bizarre, and a real blast during a typical scream-fest. There are parts so surreal with the loud thumping dance music , day-glo costumes, and airbrushed scenes on the walls that you start to really feel as if you don't know which way is up anymore. Lastly, Pittsburgh Zombies which is new for 2011. While the other parts scared me here and there, this one really had me going. Blame my love of zombies, my youth growing up on Romero's horror, my twisted weird personality... but it is what it is. I love the undead and Scarehouse did it right. My tips for a successful Scarehouse trip now or in the future: - Buy tickets online so you can get the express line. - Go on a Thursday night. - Go on a drizzly sort of cold night. - Enjoy the rooms but KEEP WALKING. Why these tips? The lines can wrap around the block on a Saturday night, especially if the weather is mild. Also, which Scarehouse specifically says "Single file in line and keep moving" no one does. People, when you stop walking you run the risk of ruining the scares and the flow of the haunted house. Enjoy the scenery, look at it, take it all in, but keep moving. It makes for a better experience for you, your party, the people behind you, and the actors. read more

Attended the " Basement " attraction at 2420 penn ave on Friday the 13th with my husband. Upon entering the event after being checked in and receiving our wrist bands the " host" who led us into the entrance of the first " theme" told us because of the corona virus the actors would not be allowed to touch us, but they were permitted to get in our faces ( which for corona virus cdc recommends you stay at least 6 feet away from others) hearing this i was extremely disappointed because i knew it would take away from the fright factor. Also, no refunds were offered, so we had to still go through. There were approx8-10 mini themed rooms where you were approached by a poorly costumed/ made up actor who would tell you a breif story about the surrounding you were currently in and make lame attempt to frighten you by making you place ur hands in static electricity ( a box) eat a " bug" which tasted like a little piece of fish food, press a button that made a mini room light up and briefly you had a sack over ur head and had to follow a rope a few feet with your hands, and hold a rubber " baby" . The actors performances were sub-par, the decor in the themed rooms was poorly put together the makeup on the actors was minimal , some had no makeup on at all. This is the third special event that i attended at the scare house, first two were at the etna location and every time it was a huge disappointment. Being a connoisseur of anything horror related i was expecting detailed story lines, superb acting and vivid realistic special effects makeup, their web site paints a picture to the consumer of extreme terror, signing a waiver i had expectations of leaving the scare house not being able to sleep afterwards, and it was a huge waste of $ to me and my husband. How scarehouse received the " best haunt in America " is the only thing truly scary to me. Save your 50$ , wait until September when other haunted houses open who truly know how to deliver some fright.I gave them 2 stars because the front of the house workers were friendly , the lady working the merch counter. read more

Every year that myself and my wife hit the road to do our Haunt Review Tour, ScareHouse is always on the list. It's not just because we've both worked there in the past either. This place is truly one helluva show and if you're in the Pittsburgh area it would serve you well to visit. What the creative team behind this terrifying attraction have been able to do every year is nothing short of remarkable. Awesomely detailed sets and for 2013 a couple of brand new surprises, including a completely redesigned lobby just go to show that they're never happy and always trying to up their game. The new parking system that has people being shuttled over from the Pittsburgh Zoo parking lot seems to be working really well and the addition of timed entry tickets also is helping with the lines (which could get insane in the past). Definitely buy your tickets online so you can take advantage of that and if you think it's going to be really busy? Check out the RIP option, could be worth it depending on the crowds that night. This haunt is always listed as one of the top Haunted Attractions in the country and every year they show us why. Can't wait to see what they have in store for everyone next year! read more

No spoilers in this review. As I logged in to Yelp to write this, I noticed that The ScareHouse has a subcategory of "Performing Arts," & I was amused by the appropriateness of this label. If you're looking for the same-old, same-old, run-of-the-mill haunted house in which some zombie chases you or actors scream incoherent statements in your face every time you turn a corner, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. ScareHouse has broken the mold of the standard haunted house & embraced some innovative concepts with its four haunts this year-- The Summoning, Trick 'r Treat: Hallowed Grounds, Krampus: Come All Ye Fearful, & The Basement. (I didn't go through The Basement.) It's $25 per person to go through the first three haunts, The Basement is a separate ticket price of $35 for one adult or $50 for two adults (no one under 18 admitted, & you have to sign a waiver, & yes, the actors in The Basement can touch you!). As I tried to keep warm outside while I waited to get in, I was entertained by The ScareHouse Bunny & the disturbingly enchanting "Princess Holly," who did a horrifyingly funny impersonation of Princess Diana, lip-synched to Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You," & actually had some Etna P.D. involved in her schtick. The girl in the ticket booth was professional & sweet, smiling slyly as she told me to have fun. The Summoning has you walking through an old time-y, 1920s "members only" club in which you're not sure you WANT to be a member or not-- it's really creepy. Trick 'r Treat: Hallowed Grounds is like walking through a pop-up book which goes over "the rules" for Halloween (based on the 2007 film Trick 'r Treat)-- I felt like Dorothy walking into Oz, it was really disorienting & disturbing. Krampus: Come All Ye Fearful references a movie that's coming out in December & ScareHouse actually has some of the real props from the movie, which was cool, but not very scary-- I feel like there should have been "more" in Krampus, but I imagine it's hard to create a haunt around a movie no one's seen yet because it hasn't come out (Krampus comes out December 4, I looked it up!). Krampus is the last haunt you walk through, & it unfortunately ends the 3-for-1 haunted house experience on a note that had me feeling more like I'd just left a museum as opposed to just leaving a haunted house. Nonetheless, I'm giving it 5 stars because the actors were passionate, the attention to detail in the makeup & costumes was awe-striking, the sets were unique & well-crafted, & I'm impressed with ScareHouse's balls to go eclectic with their horror. I wish I had more time to walk through slowly to really look at everything, or that in certain areas there wasn't so much fog so I could've seen everything better. I want to respond to some of the comments in other reviews because I feel like people are either lacking in common sense or perhaps they just don't take a moment to think as to how they could change how they approach things to make their experience better: Yes, the lines can get long. Yes, sometimes you catch up to the group in front of you or the group behind you catches up to you. If you're going to a haunted house on a weekend night in late October, what do you expect? If it's THAT much of a problem for you-- buy your tickets ahead of time, or pay the extra charge to get the V.I.P. treatment, or go in late September or early October when it's not so crowded, or go on a week night, or take a moment to consider the basic facts of reality & brace yourself to have to wait in line &/or possibly bump into strangers-- make that part of the experience! Talk to the people you're there with! Make new friends with the people behind you or in front of you! I feel like these people who write these comments about lines and crowd control in their reviews are the same people who get in line to have their picture taken with Santa on the afternoon of December 24 & then whine & moan because they have to wait for three hours. I went on a Friday night. I had to wait in line. I caught up to the group in front of me & the group behind me caught up to all of us. Somehow, I managed. Halloween is always on October 31, you knew it was coming; and Christmas is always on December 25, it's coming. Be nice, because this year, Krampus is coming. I've been to Scarehouse three times now. Each time has been a little better. The first time we waited in line 4 hours before we got in, which is a ridiculous wait for anything. The second time we only waited an hour or two. The third time we waited less than an hour. This is all thanks to a new system they implemented where you buy your tickets for a specific time slot in 30 minute increments. We reserved our tickets for 10:30 and it was so nice to roll in at 10:15 and be in the attraction before 11. As for the haunt itself, it's much more theatrical and higher quality than your typical haunted houses or hayrides. Scarehouse is permanently in the buidling, so all of the special effects and props get to stay and it doesn't have to be deconstructed at the end of each season. This also allows them to continuously modify and change the haunts and improve them during non-season. We were in a group of six, went in single file and we all got spooked several times. They make sure to scare everyone in the group, not just those in the front. It takes about 30 minutes to get through the whole thing. read more

Let me just start off by saying that I've been through a lot of haunted attractions - probably in the neighborhood of fifty plus - and The Scarehouse in Etna, PA (Pittsburgh) is as good as it gets - even if you count the big theme park's Halloween offerings. I've been through it for the past 3 years and have seen something new every year. Anyone who says this takes 4 minutes to go through really hasn't been through it at all. For the 2011 season I hit it on opening night September 23rd and was second in line. The Scarehouse consists of one large haunt that is divided into three distinct section. For 2011 they are: The Forsaken - a gruesome menagerie of dark scenes and malign denizens, Delirium - a rave-like, 3D, acid-trip filled with insane fl0urescent creeps and heart thumping music, and finally for this year - Pittsburgh Zombies - yep, an homage to all those great hometown zombies movies. Each area has tons of detailed scenes with horrific eye candy aplenty and more scaracters so that you're always on your guard. I thought the gore factor was pretty low, but younger kids - and many adults - may still have trouble sleeping after a visit so use common sense when decide to visit. General admission was 18 dollars, which is the going rate for haunts in this class, with a R.I.P. pass available for 30 which lets you skip the line on busier nights. So, if you like haunted houses like I do - then go hit The Scarehouse for a hauntingly good time. read more

The Scarehouse is awesome. My boyfriend had never been here before, so I knew we had to go this past October. I received my tickets at Costco and they were a steaaaaaal- the tickets were cheaper than the regular admission and were the RIP tickets, meaning we skipped the giant line. How great is that? It takes about 30 minutes to walk through and there is SO much to see. They have the best makeup effects and the best decor than any haunted house I have ever seen. I'm honestly shocked by so many positive reviews, but glad you all must have had a different experience than us. We watched all of the videos on youtube and were super excited for the experience so we bought our tickets in advance (Definitely print them out, a lot of people had problems scanning from their phones) We went last night (A Wednesday) and parking at the zoo was easy/plentiful and our shuttle driver was funny and friendly. Lines weren't bad at all (assuming mid week/7:30 time slot helped with that) Once we got inside, the "clown" in the waiting area was awkward at best, we were way more interested in the video playing in the ticket line outside. Once inside Scarehouse, the decorations were pretty cool and a few of the illusions were great, but the group behind us was sent in so soon after us that they caught up several different times, making us one megagroup of around 15. I could hear that the woman in the front of our group was scared a few times, but by the time I (7th/last in line) got to those points the actors were either just standing aside or making half hearted attempts to get back into their hiding spots. I kept expecting to be followed by someone creepy or chased with a chainsaw, but honestly most of the actors didn't pay much attention to us at all. Especially once the groups merged and we became the middle of a way-too-big group. The shuttle ride back was full of comments like "I can't believe I paid $40 to walk through a maze." and "We should have went to Kennywood" As for the basement, we didn't want to risk another $30 each to try it out but from the screams we heard and the man running out wrapped in plastic wrap..it certainly seems that's the way to go if you're going to make a trip to The Scarehouse. read more

Lost my flannel while walking through the haunted house And it was a flannel that my mom had since high school and she used it while getting ready for her senior prom and I think even her wedding. I told the workers that I lost it and they gave me a call back two weeks later and made sure they found it. I've gone to Scarehouse almost every year it's been opened and look forward to it every year. This year's trip was just OK. We went on a Sunday night and know the golden rule of "Buy your tickets online" so you can wait in a short line. The staff is efficient at keeping things moving and spacing groups out the best they can. There are 3 parts to Scarehouse: The Foresaken, Creepo's X-mas in 3D and Pittsburgh Zombies. The Foresaken is like a normal haunted house. It had scene from a carnival and then you were inside a house. I'm not sure if there is a "story," but it works with some decent scares, but there could've been more and seemed like some were missing. Forgive the pun, but there was a lot of dead space in scenes where scare could have happened. After the Foresaken you reach Creepos and are handed a pair of 3D glasses. You meet Creepo right away and it kinda throws things off as you see elves and other surprised thru this section and they just say "Creepo is coming." I kept thinking, "We all ready saw him so what's the point?" Creepos replaced Delerium which was another 3D section which was as scarey, but cool and funny and had an awesome puppet. Creepos X-mas to me was a huge miss and a disappointment. The third part was Pittsburgh Zombies. It's just like you think, Zombies take over Pittsburgh. It had some fun seens, but few scares. Eventhough I was disappointed in this trip to Scarehouse, I will return as they switch out one part everyyear for something new, base on the pattern The Foresaken will go away, next year, but I hope they rethink the 3D section and restructure it. I was will friends who usually end up crying at the end and they are in their late 20s. This year it was "Eh it was OK. Cool, but not frightening." The scenes are well crafted and high quality. Amazing design work and great characters. At least 1 jump from me in each section, I'm very hard to startle or scare. I went as a single and got put in a group and they were great jumping at everthing and screaming. It was wonderful. Very disappointed! Went to the overhyped Basement! And only took about 30 mins to complete and basically you're guided by actors from room to room and in each room in a new actor who pretty much sits and talks to you about joining their cult for 2 mins then on to the next room.. I truly felt as if we came to the wrong place instead of the supposedly terrifying Basement.. not one part was scary, creepy or anything really.. there were 4 couples slotted for the same time and we saw them all afterwards and everyone seemed to be on the same page on how disappointing this place was and a waste of money.. This definitely did not live up to the hype. I enjoy haunted houses and am scared pretty easily. This one didn't do it for me. Pros; -Sets were great, which was to be expected since they partnered with Legendary Pictures. -The 2 scary parts (about 30 second each) were actually scary and disorienting. -Customer service was great! We had to change our ticket time, and they were very accommodating over email. This added a whole second star to my rating of the experience. Cons: -Crowded! There wasn't any crowd control. Maybe they tried a bit in the first section, but by the second we were in a line snaking through the house. It really took away the scare factor, as you could see all of the scares happening to the people right in front of you. -It took a grand total of 20 minutes to walk through. Seriously?? I'm glad that we had pre-timed tickets so that we didn't have to wait beforehand... -The Trick or Treat portion was a wash. Not scary at all, and there were only 3 people scaring you in that section. The rest was a set with fluorescent cut-outs. Overall, it felt like a promo for upcoming Legendary movies. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

Great set pieces and themes. The actors are the real show though! Of all the area haunted houses the actors at scare house are hands down the most entertaining, scary, and authentic. They'll terrify children, and make adults feel like kids again. There are 3 separate themes that roll into 1 making for unique experiences around every corner; BOO!! Definitely recommend buying tickets in advance. The RIP tickets offer you a chance to skip some lines, and while there are plenty of lines to wait in (that's what prevented 5 stars) I'm not sure double the price is worth paying for. We had a great time and didn't mind the lines all that much as we had time to catch up with friends. For comparison, our time was for 9:00pm. The haunted house was about 35 mins long and the shuttle took abt 10 mins each way. We got in line at 8:45 for the shuttle and were back in our car for the night at 10:30. read more

The Scarehouse provided exactly what we were looking for- phenomenal special effects, floor bumps, creepy animatronics and good actors. The change in scare tactics throughout the house are what sets this attraction apart. They play on every fear. I am reviewing to spread the word to get the RIP tickets- worth the extra money if you're able. The RIP tickets allow your group to walk up the side of the building skipping the entire line and finding a small red carpet that gets your group right inside. No specific time sign up requirements- just walk right up. We emailed and purchased the tickets in advance and the event planners for the Scarehouse were very helpful via email. Take a group of your adult friends and you won't be disappointed. We will be talking about the laughs for months. Maybe next year we will be brave enough for the Basement. read more

It's hard for me get scared and excited simultaneously from horror or any typical haunted house, but the scarehouse is very effective in that manner. Many different styles and the storyline aspect adds to the fear factor. You are truly immersed, not just watching, but experiencing. The most impressive aspect is that you have to keep going as if you really are running for your life. I left there with a nice adrenaline rush and awesome memories. read more

Good hunted house! Went on the Halloween weekend. We got the VIP pass to skip the wait. Scary level 8 I am someone that very easy to get scared. This place is scary enough to make me scream a lot in there but won't make me have bad dreams at night. Worth to check it out. read more
