Parkers Arms - steak platter sampler

    Parkers Arms

Parkers Arms, for what it's worth, is the bar part of a three wing establishment that includes…read moreCattlemans Steakhouse and rooms for the night. Nice to have those all together. My review starts with the meal and I say: very friendly! Different people helped me check in, decide what to order, went over drinks, asked about my meal, and discussed dessert. I met the entire waitstaff one by one and that's just thrilling. Unfortunately not a large beer selection, especially with any notable percent. British tastes. The wooded bridge interior has as much of a pizza vibe as steak, but it screams "classic" and filled up with sizzling steak smoke as the night went on. Finishing up the meal, the one steak in the platter (rump?) was too chewy when done rare, but they did take it off rare. There was supposed to be a second beef steak in there but it turned into pork/ham. Tasty but not what I was expecting. In typical British fashion, the food overall is large portions of unseasoned fare. Salt, pepper, and (for the fries) malt vinegar to taste. There are several homemade desserts. I choose the carabrownie with Devin cream. Talk about local and it came out hot! So although I frame a steakhouse as American (and they even said their most traditional dish is fish 'n' chips, which stops service at 17:00), it was a good honest start to my vacation. As far as the hotel room, those are up above the restaurant and bar, so you hear outside conversations through the window until midnight. And the restaurant music. My room included bed and bathroom, and it was all nice, but not for the faint of hearing unfortunately. Verdict: Recommend as a place to eat. Less so to drink or to sleep. But they deserve well better than the 2 stars from the first review.

Good sized pub, family friendly with good selection of food. Shame about high prices of drinks…read more Great carvery, which is served every day, but there is also a small menu, which you can order from. The Carvery is set as an all you can eat buffet, limits do apply as you are only permitted to have one generous portion of finely carved meat, but you may help yourself to as many vegetables and potatoes as you wish. The Carvery deck is well presented and hosted by a cheerful (usually) chef or master carver, wearing chef whites. You will be offered Yorkshire puddings and stuffing before being asked which meat you would like. The Carvery offers Gammon, Roast Beef and Roast Turkey, you may have 3 slices of one or one of each etc. Currently the deck is serving cauliflower cheese, carrots, peas, green beans, onions in gravy, roast potatoes and new potatoes, you may find Swede or sweet corn on there as well but this isn't all the time. Most of the vegetables are dressed in a butter glaze. So please if you cannot eat butter (like myself) do ask the chefs and they will provide you with fresh vegetables with no glaze on them. On a separate deck you will see two large gravy bowls on a hot plate for you to help yourself to, next to these are the sauces, Cranberry, Horseradish, Mint and English Mustard. If by chance when you get to the sauces there is an empty bowl, just let the waitress's know and they will replace them with fresh sauces immediately, though they do tend to be very good at keeping each bowl topped up so this doesn't happen.
