They had short menu, but it looked mostly like traditional pub food. The greatest thing about it was it all was a reasonable price. I paid 3.99 GBP for a burger and a soft drink. The burgers come with a generous garnish of chips (fries). Being a pub, they have a large and full bar. It didn't look like there was outdoor seating, and the indoor seating wasn't extremely large. There were some "cheap" forms of entertainment, like a coin-operated video game and a dart board. The pub was, as it is in England of course, overflowing with English pride. There's a cash machine on site (not free withdrawl). The beef burger is huge! It has two patties, bacon and bit of real cheese. It was probably 3/4 of a pound of meat. It had a very beefy-bacony flavor, and it was on a very good bun. I opted to put the packet of barbecue sauce on it, since it needed a little more moisture. Food service starts at noon. The wait staff brings you the food, but you must order at the bar. The wait for the food was just about right, on the verge of being a little long, the staff look a little weighed down by the bar service. Be aware, this was at 2:00 PM. At later times, food service might be even slower because of increased bar patronage. The interior is nice. It's all wooden and pub-like. The bar is especially nice and antiquey. It looks to be made of aging cherry; this place doesn't look like it has changed in at least 100 years. Great value. Good food. Ima gonna have to give this-a-one five stars!

We loved their three spacious floors of varied seating, with its sofas and comfy booths. We also loved the food, three different meals on three different days, and every one of them was perfect. The Mile Castle was also the only bar I had ever been to which had Roman Amphorae ( big ancient food and drink containers) on display on the ground floor.

It consists of 10 keg lines and 4 cask hand pulls which are always varied and interesting. Also lots of options in cans and bottles, including some gluten-free beers! The setting here is small, but cozy. There is a small front area near the bar and also and upstairs seating area. Nothing fancy about it, just good, well-priced beer options and a relaxing place to catch some great drinks.

This is a real gem of a pub, tucked away up the hill just a few miles from Hexham. Have heard this is walkable from Hexham on a nice day but most will need a car - one thing to bear in mind is parking can be a bit limited and a bit of a free-for-all at busiest times, but you should usually get a space somewhere. Alternatively, taking a taxi is a good option, should only cost about £6-£8 from the centre of Hexham itself. First of all, the location and setting is simply stunning. If you park across the road, the views over the Tyne Valley are fantastic. You then go into the pub itself via a lovely garden area with a pergola. Inside is a proper Northumbrian country pub, great traditional decor, roaring fires, with some unusual wall and ceiling decorations (will leave that for you to discover!) Each time we've visited to eat, we've been welcomed by the friendly staff who offer the right level of service, i.e. keeping your table clear, everything in check without being overly attentive. The bar offers a good range of real ales, usually with a local brewery on offer, all of which are very well kept. They have an excellent range of wines and spirits as well, so you could easily go here for a relaxing drink, although the bar area is relatively small. However, if you are here, you really must try the food. Honestly, the Rat Inn has served up some of the best food I've ever eaten, nothing fussy or complicated, just locally sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. What is encouraging is that there are no menus on the tables, instead you'll find the day's menu on a chalkboard, which indicates freshness and illustrates how much they care about what ends up on your plate. In fact, you can find out where the meats and veg have come from as the suppliers are also chalked up on the wall. As the menu changes fairly regularly, it is not really worth recommending any particular dish on here for fear of it not being on next time, but the Sunday roast dinners are superb and the Sticky Toffee Pudding is top notch! Bear in mind you do get hearty Northumbrian-sized portions here, it is difficult to leave here without feeling a tad on the full side... As this place features in the top 50 UK gastropubs, it can get popular and they don't have an abundance of space, which adds to its charm but is also a slight disadvantage - definitely worth booking in advance to avoid missing out. In summary, the Rat Inn really is a wonderful place and one to which I can't wait to have an opportunity to go back soon.

The Rat is the very definition of an English country pub. Open fires and a cosy atmosphere are exactly what you want from a pub, add in the great food and it is hard to beat. We shared a starter of smoked haddock fritters which was delicious if a little parsimonious for £7. Main courses were superb; slow cooked belly pork and 3 cuts of lamb; delicious, deep savoury flavours that are so hard to accomplish at home. My wife's warm gingerbread dessert wasn't warm which was a disappointment in an otherwise delicious meal.

The Victoria has recently undergone a change of menu as at December 2012. The original menu has…read morebeen pared down considerable on Mains, although many of the Starter choices remain, if not quite in the same recipe format. It's evident that this change in Menu is a financial decision. The steaks are still there, but Steak Night is not 'every night' as previous and is now limited to one night. Similarly, the limited Menu choice has been carefully chosen, and not always for the better. For example, we often had the black pudding Starter, which came with scallops and a fresh salad; it now consists of one round of black pudding wrapped in half a streaky rasher of bacon on onion gravy. The salmon dish consisted one time of a thick fillet, served on ribbon vegetables, with a sauce containing prawns. It now consists of a much thinner steak, on a small bed of spring greens, one scoop of potato and a smoked garlic tablespoon of sauce. (£9.95) Hubby's sausages were advertised as being 3 different types, but they all looked and tasted exactly the same and I've tasted better in the Fine Range in Supermarkets. I haven't yet tried a steak since the Menu change, but I'm guessing that they won't be as big or as good quality based on the dishes we tried. I did note that the sides to the steak are now no longer onion rings and chips and mushrooms as before. There also seems to have been a cut down in staff. We waited over half an hour between our Starter and Main as staff rushed to cope with the patrons at the bar and the restaurant. It is a nice bar and eatery. In the vernacular of the restaurants name The Boathouse it sadly seems to have all been spoiled for a 'happorth of tar
