On the night I first visited there where a group of guys playing fiddles and accordions and singing great Scottish music. The barman (Mick I think he was called) was very helpful in telling us where to visit in the surrounding areas. We went back in at the end of our 10 day visit to Scotland and not only did he remember us, he remembered what we drank. Now THAT is a good pub. That night I tried the Malt of the month it was great value at £3.10 of a large (235ml) of superb malt. Since returning to London I have told many, many friend to visit Largs and The Royal Oak To my mind a 5 star Pub with 5 Star staff.

The barman was really nice and welcoming. It's a Belhaven pub so that particular and lovely ale is served there (including the chilled variety). There's also Tartan Special and Lake District beers, amongst others. The coffees are wonderful too! The menu was varied and enticing although could have included more vegetarian choices other than macaroni cheese - perhaps a veggie burger would be a good idea as they already sell a range of meat burgers. Home made soup and a sandwich is only £4.99 - not bad these days. It's worth remembering that it's not open on Mondays.

Attentive and friendly service, good food quality, enough menu options for everyone's needs, and a scenic view that can't be beat. I had the haddock supper with chips and peas, husband had the gammon steak with egg, chips and peas. We both liked our dinners enough to think about going back for their full breakfast. Not cheap, but not expensive either. Nothing too fancy here, but definitely worth a visit for something slightly different from the standard pubs on Main St. when you're in Largs-- especially if the sun is out and you can sit on the front seaside patio! My friends daughter was hungry so opted for a kids mac cheese and chips which went down really well while we just had some soft drinks and coffees. There's the usual fare on the menu - main meals, sandwiches and icecreams and some good veggie options. Although we weren't eating we did clock the prices which seemed pretty steep. Some butter tablet icecream ( one kids scoop) was £2.50 which did seem pretty cheeky. Our small coffees were over £2.50 each but we didn't object too much given we were enjoying the chat and the view. We did laugh at some of the other prices though - £3.10 for a breakfast roll and egg and 80p for a single digestive biscuit! I must admit the young guy serving was a gem - really smiley and enthusiastic, but I do think that this place is taking liberties with its prices. But when you're having a day out by the seaside, price isn't that important!

We were seated and left with the menus... for a long time. After about 15 minutes, someone came for orders. They do label vegetarian and gluten free items on part of the menu, but I had questions about the burger with no bun. Turns out there's gluten in the meat too, so I opted for the veggie risotto. When I asked the waitress what vegetables were in it, her answer was "peas... and some other stuff, I can't remember." Sounds great! My partner ordered a veggie wrap off the light bites menu. After another way too long period of time, we finally got our food. The risotto seemed like normal rice with sauce poured over - it was strange in texture and flavour. The veggies were peas, leeks and what I'm pretty sure was lettuce, though it could have been kale. My partner's wrap was super spicy and he didn't really enjoy that either. Since I'd ordered off the set menu, I had to wait for the dessert to roll up (white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake - base is not gluten free!) We requested the bill and dessert at the same time, bill arrived first. The cheesecake was unimpressive; I couldn't pick out any white chocolate, and the berries were more scattered on the plate than in/on the cake itself. The servers were friendly enough, but the whole experience was just so slow. I would not return.

The atmosphere in Largs at night is so much better than in Paisley. You don't feel like you're going to be stabbed. Fast forward three and a half years and here we are, sunny day and looking for a beer garden. I remember Lounge has a roof terrace. Drinks are reasonable. The pub is classy, chandeliers and chesterfield sofas, that kind of thing and a full cocktail menu. Worth a visit when you're down this way! After Nardini's, of course.
