If you're ever Elmira-adjacent, make sure you give Fair Shake a fair shake. I'll see myself out. In all seriousness, the Fair Shake is a hidden gem. You'd have to know it was there, sitting in plain sight, otherwise you'd drive right by and miss out. The Fair Shake is worth the trip, especially if you're closer to Pine City than Elmira proper. Plenty of parking and space to walk around. What else could you ask for? Plenty, as it turns out. The ice cream is Perry's, so there aren't really any surprises, except that there's every flavor ever available. In my visits, I know I've seen flavors that I don't usually see, including red velvet (which I hardly ever see anywhere, surprisingly) and Deep Sea Treasure (my new favorite). But the real winner here is the milkshake list. We're not talking about just chocolate and vanilla and the like. Consider an option like a creamsicle milkshake. When do you see that? It's easy to get analysis paralysis just looking at the lists. But portions are decent and you know what you're getting into with most choices. Make your selection and head outside to enjoy. We've made the Fair Shake a necessary stop when we're in town or nearby. Aside from supporting a small ice cream shop, we're getting more options than we know what to do with. I love this place. Hadn't been there in over 20 years and it is still awesome. Only place I can find my favorite ice cream which is vanilla with chunks of peanut butter. Prices are still amazing compared to what I pay in the city. read more

I'm bias. Grew up on Fair shake. Very sad to learn of the passing of the owner, she was always sweet to the kids, and a joy to speak with in every visit. She always made you feel welcome. Great ice cream, a lot of flavors, and about every way you can serve ice cream is available. read more

You can't visit Elmira (or Corning, or Horseheads) without making the 5 minute trip out to the tiny Pine City and its staple business - The Fair Shake. WIth over 50 flavors of hard ice cream and dozens of frozen yogurts, you'd think the offering would end there...but NO! Understanding that all manners folk enjoy ice cream, despite dietary restrictions they might have, Fair Shake also offers a wide variety of dairy-free and sugar-free options. From the old arcade games, to the outdoor fish pond, the atmosphere is that of the quintessential ice cream parlor in small town USA. There's even a homemade barrel train about 10 cars long that gives rides to the youngest of Fair Shakers for FREE - after they've finished their cone of course. Oh, and did I mention that for the teeniest of kids, the baby cone is absolutely FREE! Same for our four-legged friends. I will never travel to the area without stopping...if it's warm anyway. The staff is always so friendly and patient while we make up our minds. We always make it a point to bring out of town visitors to share the ambience and experience. Best ice cream around! I have tried the rest and this ice cream shop is the best. The servers are so friendly, the ice cream never disappoints because it is fresh, I can always taste when the ice cream is refrozen and old. The whipped cream is real, not out of a can. This is my go to ice cream place, so glad I discovered it. read more

Fair Shake was a staple in my childhood and now when I make trips back to Elmira I come back almost every day. Friendly service, huge portions, and (of course) delicious ice cream are all I ever remember about Fair Shake and that has never changed. We love The Fair Shake! My dad has been coming here since he was a kid, and now my family goes as often as we can, as well. Perry's ice cream is delicious and the service is always great! The outdoor picnic tables and such are always well maintained and ready to be sat at. The train is a fun touch as well. I agree with Rebecca P.'s review. I grew up in the neighborhood where Farishake is. I have fond memories of going there all the time for ice cream. The owner and her husband who passed away are fantastic people - they get to know everyone who comes by. I must stop in Fairshake every time I come thru Pine City during summer. read more

This place is overrated. The ice cream is overpriced and always has ice crystals in it. The only good thing about this place is the train!

Fair Shake is one of the best things about living in the area - from April to September its a quick trip down to the perfect ice cream shop. Massive selection of flavors, sundaes, milkshakes, and other snack options, at extremely reasonable prices and huge servings. Owners are very active in the community.
